Dublin , Durham , and Edinburgh . The Religious Teaching is based on strictly Protestant Principles , in accordance with the Doctrines and Liturgy of the Church of England . It is itself symbolic of that perfection after which it teaches all Members of the Masonic Brotherhood to aspire , and to their attainment of which ir . thc highest degree possible for men in the present state of being , ail its laws and its lessons are designed to contribute . Much of its teaching is carried on by means of symbols , which , continually meeting the eye , are calculated to recal ¦ its lessons of wisdom , and to impress them on the mind . Without an intimate acquaintance with the symbols of Freemasonry , no one is entitled to be deemed a well-instructed Freemason . It is to be feared that there is reason , however , to think that many brethren , are less perfectly acquainted with these symbols than it is desirable they should be , in order that they might at all times contemplate them with the fullest advantage , owing to the difficulty which they have found of acquiring the requisite knowledge Nothing hitherto published has explained the beauties and excellences of Masonic Symbols ; and the present work is intended to supply this want . The symbols are explained and with their meaning , their use is pointed out ; and the preat lessons are exhibited which they are intended to help in teaching , to impress upon the mind , and to recall to memory . Freemasonry is represented in a light in which , although the true one , it is tco seldom contemplated , as the very type of Christianity , —the consummation of all that is most excellent inman , and most conducive tothe welfare of individuals , of families , and of society . The origin of Masonic Symbolism is also considered , and its connection with the Symbolism of the Jewish Law is pointed out . The essentially religious nature of Freemasonry is established by the evidence of its Symbols and by other proofs ; and the Masonic Law of perfection is stated and explained .
