Bro . Large , P . P . G . S . B . Staffordshire , in response to the toast of "The Prov . Grand Officers , " said he was rather surprised at being called upon to reply , as he was not an officer of that county , but he had been intimately associated with the Prov . Grand Officers of Herts for five or six years , having been a subscribing member of two lodges . On behalf of the brethren included in the toast he returned
thanks , and , speaking personally , he always had great pleasure in assisting and being present at that lodge . Bro . A . Phillips Hills , I . P . M ., in giving "The VV . M ., " said Bro . Bruce had been associated with them for several years , and that association had been one of the greatest pleasures . The W . M . 's assistance had been very ably given in the lodge , and had been as good as that of any
other brother in it , for he had always performed his work well in the past , and they could rely upon him doing the same in the future . He ( the I . P . M . ) hoped thebrethren would all do their utmost to give the W . M . plenty of work , for if he had the opportunity he would do his work well , and would carry out thoroughly the genuine principles and tenets of the Craft . The W . M . would set them a
good example , and he hoped they would all follow it . Bro . R . Marston Bruce , W . M ., thanked the I . P . M . and brethren for the kindly proposition and reception of the toast . As a young and inexperienced Mason he could assure them he was fully alive to the responsibilities of his office . The I . P . M . had been good enough to make some prophecies and he hoped they would be realised .
"The Visitors" having been cordially given and responded to , The Worshipful Master gave "The I . P . M . and Past Masters , " and said that Bro . Hills , I . P . M ., was so well known—and especially his good qualities—that he might be spared any eulogies from him , but he would say their I . P . M . had gained their regard and admiration for the
ability and zeal with which he had presided over and controlled the work of the lodge . He would heartily congratulate Bro . Hills upcn having accepted the office of Prov . Grand Steward . Bro . Tipper , P . M ., was an enthusiastic Mason and one of the most important officers in the province , which was an honour conferred in the lodge by the Prov . Grand Master . He would particularly thank
Bro . Tipper for the trouble taken in organising the musical portion of the programme that evening . With regard to Bro . Moore , P . M ., he ( the W . M . ) and other officers owed him a special debt of gratitude for the kind way in which he always assisted them in the work and in their progress up the Masonic ladder . Bro . A . Phillips Hills , I . P . M ., in reply , said he had tried
to do his duty , and hoped he had succeeded to some extent , lt was always a pleasure for the Past Masters to do what they could to assist others in their working in whatever capacity . He might , as I . P . M ., take that opportunity of inviting all those interested in the work to attend a lodge of instruction as often as possible , for it was only by doing so that the work could be learned thoroughly and properly .
Bro . Moore , P . M ., said he was the senior P . M . of the lodge , it being- six years since it was consecrated at Waltham Cross , and shortly after that event theW . M . and I . P . M . were initiated into Freemasonry , and what those brethren had done in attaining- the chair could be done by
the younger members . It was a proud position which every Mason strove to attain—the position of W . M . of his mother lodge . "The Treasurer and Secretary" and "The Officers " were duly honoured , and the Tyler's toast closed a pleasant and enjoyable evening .

One candidate was proposed , and " Hearty good wishes " was given by the visitors , and with other usual business the lodge was closed , and the W . M . invited all present to meet him at the Grand Hotel , where upwards of Co sat down to a banquet , which even surpassed Bro . Shepherd ' s former efforts to please .
The usual loyal toasts were proposed from the chair , and were received with musical honours , Bro . D . H . Cook presiding at the piano . The Worshipful Master , in proposing the toast of " The Officers , " alluded in feeling terms to the great loss the Craft had sustained at the death of Lord Carnarvon , Pro Grand Master of England , and said perhaps it had not
been in our day that a more able and willing Grand Officer had been removed from the Order as his lordship . " The Provincial Grand Lodge , Present and Past , " was proposed , and duly responded to by . the actual P . G . Officers of the year present . Bro . Dr . Harris , I . P . M ., said it gave him much pleasure to propose "The Health of the Newly-installed VV . M ., Bro . G . Starkey . " It was most remarkable that the
present W . M . of the old Lodge No . 119 and he ( Bro . Harris ) had from their first appointment to office advanced step by step from Stewards in succession to each other , and now that day he had the honour to place him in the chair of K . S ., and no ceremony had been performed by him in the Craft that he felt prouder of , from the fact that no more genial and worthy brother in Masonry had ever been placed in that ancient chair , and harmony and prosperity was bound to be under his mallet .
Bro . Starkey responded , and thanked the brethren for the great honour conferred upon him , and he hoped with the assistance of the officers invested that his year of office would be marked with success . Other toasts followed , and , with a few capital songs from Bros . Cook , Gaffney , Kerr , and Thompson , a most enjoyable evening was spent .

Letters and wires were read from Lodges Nos . 371 , 1002 , 1073 , 1 CO 0 , and many brethren from a distance who were unable to be present .
