This lodge of instruction , which formerly met at the Lugard Tavern , Lugard-road , Peckham , whence they have now removed to the Duke of Albany Hotel , Kitto-road , Nunhead , of which Bro . Kincey is the host , held its annual supper on Wednesday , the 9 th inst ., when about 40 brethren , under the presidency of Bro .

After the company had done ample justice to the good things provided by Bro . Read , who had charge of the catering department , the CHAIRMAN lost no time in proceeding with the customary toasts , which he proposed

with admirable brevity . The lodge is fortunate in having an abundance of good vocalists , and the enjoyment of the evening was greatly enhanced by their performances . Among the performers were Bros . Rogers , James Smith , Remington , Warman , Eedle , Burrows , Bacon , and others .

Before separating , the CHAIRMAN proposed 'Prosperity to the United Mariners Lodge , " under whose warrant this lodge of instruction works , coupled with the names of Bro . Smith , Remington , and Barnett . The toast was warmly received , and gracefully replied to . A .

New York Grand Lodge Library.

NEW YORK GRAND LODGE LIBRARY .

The library of the Grand Lodge of New York is rapidly increasing under the able management of Bro . Herman G . Carter , the Grand Librarian , who , on June 3 rd , 18 90 , made his eighth annual report to the Grand Lodge . His first is dated June 5 th , 188 3 , and I have been one , out of many , who have eagerly looked

forward to the issue of these interesting and able reports from year to year . All that Bro . Carter has so far succeeded in doing is to present , from time to time , catalogues of certain portions of the collection of Masonic books and MSS . ; but this plan is far from satisfactory . As each year rolls onward the number

and value of the books are ever on the increase , and by the time one department has been put aside to do justice , in part , to another , the first has largely been added to , and year by year each successive catalogue becomes meagre in the extreme because out of date . I am glad to note that a complete catalogue is

to be made of all the collection , and then year by year additions might be noted on slips , as with our " Quatuor Coronati " Lodge Library , and kept for reference , and ultimately be bound so as to preserve the full reports of the several additions . The present is a supplemental catalogue , a perusal of which abundantly proves

that the Grand Librarian of New York is keeping pace with the advance of Masonic literature and " keeps his eye open " for all new works of importance . The collection as a whole is a valuable one , but needs rather a large sum to be spent in completing sets . One of the gems in the library is a copy of the engraved list

of lodges of the Grand Lodge of England 175 ^ , which is unique and should be reproduced just as Bro . C . Sackreuter did that of the 176 4 list for me , and as Bros . General Pike , Carson , and myself have done for others of great rarity and worth . The list of donors is a lengthy one , some of us in the old country being pleased to assist in the good work , and the most

pleasing feature of all is the stead y increase in the number of readers in the Reading Room , which , as Bro . Carter says , "is a matter for sincere congratulation . " Evidentl y the Grand Lodge of New York is alive most fully to the importance of this branch of Masonic enterprise , the words of praise from its esteemed Grand Master being well deserved by our friend Herman G . Carter , as the Grand Librarian . W . J . HUGHAN .

BRO . SERGEANT GEORGE CLIFFORD .

A very imposing military funeral took place on Wednesday , the 9 th instant , when the remains of Bro . in procession , and dropped upon the coffin a white glove and sprig of acacia , tied with blue ribbon , as is usual on their attendance at a brother ' s funeral . Bro . Sergeant Clifford , who was very highly respected b y the military amongst whom his duty brought him in contact , and also by many civilian friends , joined the Army Service Corps on the 24 th of April , 1876 ; was

advanced to the rank of corporal in 1881 , and received his sergeant ' s stripes in 1884 . From 1882 to 1885 he served in Egypt , and was awarded the Egyptian medal and star . THE ELECTION OF SECRETARY .

On Saturday last the election of Secretary of the Royal Masonic Institution for Boys was held at Freemasons' Tavern , Bro . Richard Eve in the chair . A large number of brethren attended . There were 28 candidates , viz .: — The poll opened at 12 and closed at [ 3 o ' clock , and

very shortly after the latter hour the Scrutineers made the following report : James Morrison McLeod , 2317 ; Alfred Craven Greenwood , 991 ; Gordon Smith , M . A ., 815 ; Edwin Storr , 716 ; S . R . Baskett , 536 ; Lieut .-Colonel F . Egerton Bennett , 2 t ; James H . Hawkins , 14 ; J . W .

Britton , 5 ; J . Smith , 4 ; Alfred Grant , 3 ; Major C . W , Randall Ford , 2 ; John R . Foster , 2 ; W . Fraser , 2 ; Charles R . Augustus Griffin , 2 ; James Hall , 2 ; Wm . Edward Hoy , 2 ; George Jackson , 2 ; Edwin Polkinghorne , 2 ; W . G . T . Albertsberg , 1 ; W . Shephard , 1 ; Captain James Thompson , 1 ; J . Austen , o ; J . Blower ,

o ; W . Thomas Gadie , 0 ; . George Hartridge , o ; Joseph Bond Roose , o ; George R . Saunders , 0 ; and Charles S . Thomas , o . Bro . RICHARD EVE having formally declared Bro . J . M . MCLEOD elected as Secretary of the Institution , that brother rose and tendered his hearty

acknowledgments for the confidence reposed in him . He had fought the fi g ht straightforwardly and honestl y , and was particularly gratified he had been so well supported , as he felt the majority he enjoyed would enable him to advance the interests of the Institution . He felt sure he should have the aid of every brother who had

supported his candidature in carrying on the work of the Boys' School . He had felt confident that his friends would back him up in his endeavour to secure the post of Secretary , and they had done so in a most gratifying and fraternal manner . In thanking them for their votes he could only promise that he would do all that

lay in his power to prove he appreciated their confidence and hoped he might be able to discharge the duties of the office to their satisfaction . He should certainl y strive to do his duty and advance the welfare of the Institution . He knew he had . a good man to follow in Bro . Binckes—one whom it

would be very difficult to equal—but he hoped to take him as an example of what was required , and win as much approval as he had done . It was in 18 7 8 he first met Bro . Binckes , and he it vvas who had first aroused in him an interest in the Masonic Charities , just as he had aroused in many others a desire to do

something on their behalf . Bro . McLeod concluded by proposing a vote of thanks to the Chairman oi the day for the efficient and impartial manner in which he had presided . This was seconded by Bro . BINCKES , who took the opportunity of expressing a few words of thanks for

the way in which he had been supported in years gone by . He also hoped that the Institution would flourish under its new Secretary . Bro . RICHARD EVE acknowledged the vote of thanks , and expressed the pleasure he felt at all times in

assisting at such meetings as the present . Whatever he did was for pure love of Masonry and a desire to promote its principles . Bro . GKORGE EVERETT proposed a vote of thanks to the Scrutineers , which being seconded and carried , the proceedings terminated . «

W . J . HUGHAN .

He felt sure he should have the aid of every brother who had

supported his candidature in carrying on the work of the Boys' School . He had felt confident that his friends would back him up in his endeavour to secure the post of Secretary , and they had done so in a most gratifying and fraternal manner .
