and reflected the highest credit upon Mrs . Starling ' s catering . The usual loyal and Masonic toasts having been duly honoured , that of the " Provincial Grand Master , Lord Holmesdale , " met with a most enthusiastic reception , and in giving it the W . M . dealt warmly upon the many excellent attributes of our noble P . P . G . M . In response to the toast of "The D . P . G . M ., Bro . Eastes , and the rest of the Grand Officers , " which was coupled

with the name of Bro . R . Stone , that brother bore testimany to the zeal and energy at all times displayed for the good of Freemasonry by Bro . Eastes . He regretted that there vvas not some older and more experienced Provincial Grand Officers present to respond , but at the same time felt that even the most eloquent could not tell one half the good work done by his lordship and Bro . Eastes in the province . He thanked them cordially for the hearty

manner in which they had received the toast . Bro G . Stone , LP . M ., then rose to propose the toast of the evening , " The Health of the W . M . " He said they were no doubt aware for what reason the gavel had been placed in his hands , and although it vvas the first time he had had the honour , yet he might safely say that he felt it a . rreat pleasure , and perhaps one of the greatest pleasures tfiat fell to the lot of an LP . M ., to propose the health of

his successor in the responsible duties as Master of a lodge . The toast he had to propose to them was that of the VV . M ., and he felt sure that in that lodge , where such unanimity and good feeling prevailed , it would be received with the cordiality and enthusiasm it deserved . The W . M . had been with one accord , and in the most unanimous manner , voted into the chair , and he had no hesitation in saying that he was' the right man in the right place . He

( the VV . M . ) had been initiated in the lodge , and what could be a grander thing for an initiate than to be found worthy to be placed at the head of the lodge in which he had just been taught the sublime tenets of their Order . Both as J . W . and S . W . Bro Hutton had done his duty well and worthily , and they had always found him ready to carry out the duties entrusted to him . He had attended their lodge of instruction to render himself fit for the position ,

but , above all , he had worked hard for the noble Chanties of the Order , and under his rule he ( Bro . Stone ) had not the slightest doubt but that they would have a prosperous and harmonious year . The W . M ., in returning thanks , said he felt very proud at being placed in the position he occupied that night , a position that it was the ambition of every man to occupy . One thing he congratulated himself upon was that the

lodge extended to every new Master the most hearty sympathy and goodwill , and he felt sure that would be extended to him , more especially as he had to follow a Master whose reign had been so eminently successful , and whose abilities were far above everything that he could attempt to emulate . However , they might depend upon it that he would endeavour to do his duty in such a manner as to warrant their confidence , and nothing should be

wanted on his part to maintain the high character and prestige of the St . John and St . Paul Lodge . The next toast was that of "The Past Masters , " and in putting it , the W . M . alluded in eulogistic terms to the work done by the LP . M ., Bro . G . Stone , who , he said , had , during the past year , laboured most zealously for the prosperity of the lodge . Few Masters had done what he had doneand the brethren had shown their appreciation of his

, abilities by unanimously voting him a handsome Past Master ' s jewel as a token of the esteem in which he was held by them . It was a decoration that Bro . Stone most heartily deserved , and he should call upon his esteemed father , Bro . R . Stone , P . M ., to present it to him . Bro . R . Stone then took the chair , and pinned the jewel upon his son ' s breast , and after playfully alluding to the fact that the recipient sometimes called him father and

sometimes brother , wished him long life to wear it , and then , when the time came for him to leave this mortal lodge , might his children , aye , even his children ' s children , wear it , and treasure it as a heir loom , and as a token of the respect and esteem in which their progenitor vvas held in by the brethren of the St . John and St . Paul Lodge . Bro . G . Stone , whose reception was most enthusiastic , in returning thanks said he had often said , " This is the

proudest moment of my life , " but he certainly must say that although some might have been , and were proud days , and some prouder days , yet now the superlative vvas reached , and this he felt sure vvas and would be the proudest in his life . It was a proud thing to be W . M . of such a lodge as the St . John and St . Paul , and although he felt a pleasure in being enrolled amongst the Past Masters , yet that pleasure was tempered with regret . His had been

an eventful year of office , and it vvas a grand thing for a youngster like him , at thirty years of age , to be W . M . of such a lodge , and follow his father in the chair . During the year they had not only prospered materially , but they had also the honour of entertaining a Grand Lodge at the preparatory Provincial meeting . During the jjear his father had been decorated as the Provincial Grand Officer , and had been invested as G . S . D ., a circumstance

of which not only he , but all of them might be proud of , as an honour done them by their Grand Master Lord Holmesdale . There was not a lodge in the Province of Kent , where a more truly Masonic feeling prevailed , and he felt that the jewel p resented him that day was not only unanimously voted him , but bore with it the hearty good wish of every member of the lodge . As his father and the VV . M . had so kindly said , he trusted he might

long be spared to wear it , and could only say that in the time to come he should look back to the year 1 S 81-2 as the proudest and happiest moments of his life . " The Health of Bro . Knight" vvas then proposed in glowing terms by Bro . G . Stone , and Bro . Knight feelingly returned thanks . The next toast vvas that of " The Treasurer and Secretary , " and Bro . Poole eloquently responded , alluding in

the course of his remarks to the almost unprecedented progress made by the W . M . in Freemasonry , he having only been initiated into the Craft some three years ago ; that he argued was an incentive for aspiring Masons to join the lodge and emulate the good work done by Bro Hutton . He paid a high tribute to the indefatigable exertions of Bro .

Knight , and concluded a brilliant speech by trusting that the lodge and its W . M . would have a successful and prosperous future . " The Visitors " were toasted , and Bros . Neech , Cleverly , and Holleyman suitably responded . " The Officers " was responded to by Bro . Hills . The toast of "The Masonic Press" was coupled with the name of Bro . Jolly .

Prince of Wales Hotel , Erith , where a superbly served banquet awaited them . The following brethren , besides those above enumerated , were present : —Bros . R . Stone , P . M ., P . G . J . D . and reflected the highest credit upon Mrs .

Jolly .

He was certain that an old officer with such abilities was marked for honours in the-Provincial Grand Lodge .
