Masonic Notes .

Highly successful in every respect were the proceedings at Worksop and Welbeck in connection with the special meeting of the Provincial Grand Lodge of Nottinghamshire , on the 3 rd instant . It is about a year since his Grace the Duke of Portland , P . S . G . W . of

England , was installed Grand Master of the Province ' n succession to the lamented Duke of St . Albans , who resigned in 18 97 after 20 years' service , and died shortly afterwards . This , therefore , was the first occasion on which the present Provincial Grand Master "net the brethren of Nottinghamshire , and he appears

to have resolved that , as far as lay in his power , the gathering should be a memorable one . Hence when the business part of the proceedings , which took place in the Town Hall , Worksop , was concluded , and the brethren had partaken of luncheon , they were conveyed in brakes to Welbeck Abbey , where they , and

Masonic Notes.

thc ladies who accompanied them , wcre most cordially welcomed by the Duke and Duchess of Portland to a garden party , and , needless to say , most thoroughly enjoyed themselves . * » *

But while there was no limit to the brethren s enjoyment in the ducal grounds there were circumstances connected with the meeting of thc Provincial Grand Lodge which could not do otherwise than throw a gloom over the proceedings . In the interval that had elapsed since the Duke's installation two of the ablest

Masons in the Province had passed away , namely , the late Bro . Lieut .-Col . Newton , Past G . Deacon of England , who was re-appointed Dep . Prov . G . Master last year , after having discharged the duties of that office faithfully and well for a considerable time under his Grace of Portland's predecessor ; and Bro . Arthur

Stubbs , who in like manner had been re-appointed to the post of Prov . G . Secretary , in which he had already won the esteem and respect of his brethren . In referring to these mournful circumstances the Duke of Portland spoke in the kindest and most laudatory terms of the services which both these brethren had rendered to Freemasonry in the Province , and on

appointing his Honour Judge Masterman to succeed the late Bro . Newton as Deputy , and Bro . Dr . A . C . W . Peskett as Prov . G . Secretary , his Grace expressed every confidence that his newly chosen ofiicers would acquit themselves worthily , in a manner that would redound to their own credit , and at the same time prove advantageous to the Craft in Nottinghamshire .

» * * The meeting , as may be imagined , was a large one , there being several visitors of distinction , prominent among whom were his Grace ' s brother , Lord Henry Cavendish-Bentinck . M . P ., Prov . G . M . of Cumberland

and Westmorland , on whom had devolved the honour of installing the Duke as Prov . G . M . ; Bro . Edward Letchworth , F . S . A ., Grand Secretary , representing his Royal Highness the M . W . G . Master ; and Bro . Sir Frederick Milner , Bart ,, M . P ., of the Province ol North and East Yorkshire .

* * * Thc annual meeting of the Provincial Grand Lodge of Cheshire , which took place at Chester on Wednesday , the 9 th instant , appears to have bcen held somewhat earlier than we expected , at all events , earlier by some weeks than last year , hut our anticipations that

it would prove a success have been fully realised . How indeed , could it have been otherwise '¦> In our article of last week we referred at some length to all the more salient features in the several reports of which we had been favoured with copies . The Provincial Grand "Master ( Earl Egerton of Tatton ) congratulated the

brethren on the support they had so generously given during the past year to the Central Masonic Institutions , and echoed thc hope expressed by those in charge of thc local Institutions , that in the year on which they were entering they would turn their attention more particularly to the requirements of their own Charitie * . and so make up for the deficiencies

which had :,. . rked the year that wars ended , but which , under the circumstances , wcre excusable . He also expressed thc hope that the appeal for a subscription of two guineas from each lodge in the Province towards thc Cheshire Benevolent Institution would meet with a favourable response , so that they might bc able to augment the number of annu itants .

» * » We sincerely congratulate Bro . Edgar Goble , Past G . S . B . England , Deputy Prov . Grand Master of Hampshire and thc Isle of Wight , on thc testimonial which was presented to him at the recent annual meeting , at Southampton , of thc Provincial Grand

Lodge . Bro . Goble was appointed to his present office last year , on the resignation of Bro . ] . E . Le Feuvre , P . G . D . ; but for 13 years previously he had fulfilled the onerous duties of Prov . Grand Secretary with a success and in a manner which had secured him not only the approbation of his respected chief—Bro .

W . W . B . Beach , M . P . — -but also thc esteem ; -rd respect of all the members of the Province . VVhen , therefore , it became known that his advancement tu the higher and more responsible , but hardly less exacting , post of Deputy had been resolved upon , the brethren generally determined on recognising his services in a

tangible form , the result being that a fund was started , and on Tuesday , the 8 th instant , the Prov . Grand Master had the pleasure of handing to his Deputy , in open Provincial Grand I . i . dge , a service of silver plate and gold watch , with a gem ring for Mrs . Goble , in testimony not only of what he had done to promote thc clliciency of Freemasonry in Hampshire and thc

Masonic Notes.

Isle of Wight , but also as a mark of the esteem and respect in which he is held throughout the Province . We trust that Bro . Goble may be spared for many years to continue the splendid work he has done , and to establish himself still more firmly—if such a thing is possible —in the hearts of his brethren .

» * It is almost a matter of common knowledge that Freemasonry in Western Australia has been making rapid strides during the past few years . On referring to the Grand Lodge Calendar for 1 SS 8 , we find th ^ t the

number of lodges on the roll of the District Grand Lodge , when that was published , that is to say , early in December , 1887—the year in which the lodges in the Colony were constituted a District Grand Lodge—was just six , while in the same Calendar for the present

year there is a roll of 22 lodges . Last Week We published particulars of the consecration of y-jt another lodge , the formation of which had been sanctioned by Bro . Sir Gerard Smith , District Grand Master , though at the time the Warrant of his Royal Highness the

M . W . G . Master for its constitution had not been received by the District authorities . But what must add to the interest we necessarily feel in the progress which Freemasonry is making in this particular Colony is the fact that the new Iodge was

consecrated by the Right Rev , the Bishop of Perth , Past Grand Chaplain of England , who also played the part of Installing Master , and installed Bro . C . E . White as the first W . M , We venture to think this is about the only instance in which the ceremonies of consecration and installation have been performed by a Bishop .

« » We arc too accustomed to criticisms of all kinds to be affected by the diatribes of an angry contemporary , and even if it were otherwise we should think the proverbial three times ere we attempted to appease

the wrath of a journal which openly declares—as the A ' ein Zealand Craftsman does in its July numberthat "in no case shall we readily forget its evil influence " —that is , the evil influence of this journal"exerted so long and in so venomous a manner

against the Masonic peace of this colony . " Not much is to be gained by attempting to conciliate a newspaper which persists in being angry , and every now and then indulges in a sharp outburst of spleen for apparently no other reason than to show that it is still under the influence of its evil temper .

* * Some time ago—it was in one of our earlier April issues—we sharply criticised the New Zealand Craftsman for its vulgar attack on those distinguished brethren whom the Grand Lodge of New

Zealand has from time to time elected to fill the office of M . W . Grand Master . We were , and still are , of opinion lhat it ill became the Craftsman , or any other journal , whether Masonic or non-Masonic , to publish such remarks as these : " The Grand Masters of New

Zealand , with one exception , have not acquired celebrity for lightening the private purse in the cause of Freemasonry ; " "The brother who fs elected Grand Master is invariably careful not to allow his social position to afflict the Craft with any

dazzling radiance , and his Masonic value is generally a little less than nil ; " " In the meantime there is no reason why thc Masonic automaton , or even a real live Grand Master , should not contribute his quota to the funds . " » * *

These , criticisms , bc it remembered , are those of our New Zealand contemporary , and the head and front of our latest offence against the Masonry ot New Zealand and its journalism is that we have expressed a very natural disgust at the treatment which those

whom the Grand Lodge has delighted to honour have received from the Ncio Zealand Craftsman . Perhaps it would have been better had we left unnoticed these deliberate attempts to throw dirt at the most distintinguished Freemasons in the Colony . However , if

wc have committed an error , it has been from a very excusable desire to see the Grand Masters of New Zealand treated with the courtesy to which they are entitled . As we pointed out last April , " Good men

and true will fight shy of allowing themselves to bc nominated for this ollice when they find that treatment such as our contemporary has meted out to thc past and present occupants of thc chair is one of the penalties they must pay for election . "

? * * The United Grand Lodge of New South Wales have unanimously elected as their Grand Master Bro , J . C . Remington ( General Manager of the Mutual Life of Australasia ) ,
