It was welcome news which Bro . McLeod had the pleasure of announcing at the Quarterly General Court of the Royal Masonic Institution for Boys on Friday , the nth instant , namely , that his Grace the Duke of Devonshire , Prov . G . Master of Derbyshire , has very kindly undertaken to preside as Chairman at the 98 th

Anniversary Festival to be held some time in the month of June , 1896 . In 1885 the Duke , then Marquis of Hartington , M . P ., presided at the 87 th Festival of the same Institution , and though the Returns were not what they have been during the last few years , the substantial sum of ; £ i 2 , 006 was raised

in response to his lordship ' s advocacy , the Board of Stewards being 275 in number . We have every confidence that a far larger total , one more in keeping with the present requirements of the School , will be forthcoming on the occasion of his Grace ' s second Chairmanship .

As for the Province of Derbyshire , of which , when the Festival takes place , the Duke will have been Grand Master for upwards of 38 years , we are satisfied that the announcement we have just made will be received with pleasure by the lodges and brethren under his Grace's charge , and that , as in 1885 ,

they will spare no effort in order to ensure the complete success of the forthcoming Anniversary . Derbyshire is not one of our largest . Provinces , there are but 26 lodges on its roll , with a fair sprinkling of Royal Arch chapters and sundry bodies belonging to other Masonic organisations . But in 1885 its share

in the general total of subscriptions and donations , including the Chairman ' s personal contribution , amounted in round figures to ^ 1550 , the number of brethren who gave their services as Stewards being 24 . Since then it has played the part of a regular , and , on special occasions , of a very generous

contributor to all our Masonic Institutions , so that here again we have every confidence that Derbyshire will acquit itself successfully in the role of " Chairman's Province , " and that the sum it will strive to raise will be not less than , but in all probability in excess of , what it has raised at previous Festivals .

* » We must not close these remarks without tendering our hearty congratulations to the Secretary of the Institution on his success in enlisting the advocacy of so distinguished a Chairman and the special support of a Province of which he has the honour to be a Past

Provincial Senior Grand Warden ; and though we have very serious doubts about his ability to infuse a greater amount of zeal and energy into his efforts for obtaining funds for this Charity , we dare say he and his staff with him will try to squeeze a little more effort out of themselves in behalf of the forthcoming 9 8 th Festival .

* * » We have referred at length to the recent School Elections in our article , but we cannot let the opportunity pass of expressing our very great satisfaction at the results so far as the last cases are concerned . For several . years we have considered it our duty to appeal

to those brethren who had not previously committed themselves to the support of any particular candidate or candidates , not because we had any personal interest in , or even knowledge of , the children in question , but because we felt that as their claims had

been approved , admission for them into the Schools should be won if possible . On this occasion all the last cases—three girls and five boys—have been elected , and we desire to express our acknowledgments to the Governors and Subscribers by whose votes and influence these results were obtained .

* * We beg to acknowledge receipt of copy of Bro . W . J . Hughan ' s " Old Charges of British Freemasons "Second Edition with illustrations . It is like all Bro Hughan's previous works , a most admirable compilation , which will be found of the greatest value to that

numerous and ever-increasing class of Masonic students who give their attention to the study of these important documents . There can be no doubt whatever that the compilation of this work must have entailed on thc author an immense amount of labour . But he will have his reward in the knowledge that the edition , which by the way is dedicated to Bro . G . W . Spcth , l

Secretary of Quatuor Coronati Lodge , and editor of its Transactions , & c , is as complete as it can be made , containing , as it does , ample particulars of all the MSS . of the " Old Charges " known to exist , and such information respecting the missing MSS . as Bro . Hughan has been able to trace . A review of it will appear next week .

* * » The annual meeting of the Provincial Grand Lodge of Dorsetshire will be held in the great room of Sherborne School , Sherborne , on Wednesday next , the 23 rd instant , while on the following day the Provincial

Grand Master has signified his intention of consc crating the St . Aldhelm ' s Lodge , No . 2559 , at St Aldhelm's School , Branksome , at 1 . 30 for 2 p . m precisely . * » *

The ceremony of consecrating ihe Empress Lodge , No . 2581 , as will be seen from the ample report we publish elsewhere , passed off most successfully . There was an unusually numerous gathering of distinguished brethren present to witness the impressive ceremony , and it is neediest to say that in the hands of the Grand

Secretary everything went admirably . The subsequent proceedings were equally satisfactory , and Bro . Sir J . Dimsdale , W . M ., and the officers and members of the lodge must be gratified with the result of the inaugural meeting of the new lodge . We trust the future will be in accordance with the presage of Monday , the 14 th inst .
