In future numbers of the Freemason we purpose giving a series of portraits of Worshipful Masters who have been recently installed . Recognising the fact that no greater honour can be bestowed on a brother than to be elected the Master of his lodge , wc

desire to do our part towards creating a permanent record of such event in his Masonic history by placing his portrait before our readers . We shall be pleased to furnish Secretaries of lodges and others who may take an interest in our project whatever information may be desired as to our proposed method of procedure .

Elsewhere will be found a record of the services rendered to Freemasonry by the late Bro . Brackstone Baker , P . G . D ., but the duty , nevertheless , devolves upon us of giving voice to the very general and sincere regret which is felt in all branches of the Craft at the loss

thus sutained by the Order . Bro . Baker was so wellknown and so highly respected a personage in our ranks that it will be some time before we are able to

reconcile ourselves to his death , while a still longer time must elapse ere the gap created in our ranks will be filled by one as capable as he was , especially in dealing with important Colonial questions , and as genial withal .

Bro . Baker ' s connection with the Craft was of close upon 40 years' duration , and there is no doubt that he must have done good service in lodge and chapter as well as in Grand Lodge and Grand Chapter ; but he will be chiefly remembered , firstly , as having been the

representative at our Grand Lodge of upwards of 20 Dominion and United States Grand Lodges ; secondly , as having been a member of the Colonial Board almost uninterruptedly for close on 32 years ; and lastly , as a founder and the first W . M . of our famous Angle

American Lodge , No . 2191 , which , under his genial auspices and those of his successors in the chair , has done so much since its constitution in 18 S 6 to cement still more closely the union previously existing between the American and English sections of the great

Fraternity of Ancient Free and Accepted Masons . It was a fitting close to a long and honourable career that heshould have borne the leading part in the constitution of a lodge , designed as the Anglo-American is , to fulfil so desirable and 30 honourable a purpose .

To the members , one and all , of this important lodge we tender our warmest and most respectful sympathy . Great though the loss sustained by the other bodies with which he was connected must be , it strikes us that the blow will fall most

heavily on our Anglo-American brethren , who , by this sad event , are deprived of the services of their premier member , and will never again experience the pleasure of being cheered to enthusiasm by his genial and kindly presence .

# # # We are gratified at being again in a position to announce that Bro . Terry has been making further satisfactory progress in strengthening the Board of Stewards for the approaching Festival of the Royal

Masonic Benevolent Institution . Last week we were able to record a total of about 185 brethren who had volunteered their services for the occasion . This week the number is slightly in excess of 200 , and whaf makes

the position still more satisfactory is that the new members have five good solid weeks before them in which to essay their skill in charming the muchneeded guineas out of the pockets of their friends and brethren in Masonry .

We trust , however , that our readers will not permit themselves to be over-sanguine as to the result . A good deal remains to be accomplished in the way ol obtaining the services of brethren as Stewards , before we shall feel ourselves justified in hoping that the

Secretary's announcement of the result on the eventful day will , as regards the pounds sterling , assume the dimensions of what Bro . Terry tersely described , a short while since , as a " five-figure " total . Still it is

at least a satisfaction that we are nearer such a consummation [ now than we were a week ago , that is to say , by what the 15 or 16 new Stewards may be able to raise before the 28 th of next month .
