MASONIC AND GENERAL TIDINGS

We regret to stale that Bro . the Kev . Dr . Brette met with an accident on Monday evening last . The doctor was walking down sf airs , talking to a friend , and thinking he had arrived at the bottom , took one step too many , the consequence being that he fell and broke his arm . From inquiries made , we are glad to state that our reverend brother is progressing favourably . Bro . the Karl of Miiltown , accompanied by Bro . H . Wright , visited a number of the City Churches on Sunday last .

In the Chancery Division of the High Court of Justice on Saturday last , Mr . Justice North made an order for the winding up of the Masonic and General Life Assurance Company . The installation of Royal Leek Lod ge , No . 1840 , Bangor , took place at the Masonic Hall on the ist inst ., Bro . H . Kneeshaw being installed VV . M . by Bro . I . Lloyd Griffith , P . P . G . S . D .

The Eleanor Lod ge of Instruction , No . 1 : 707 , meets every Monday evening at S p . m ., at the Seven Sisters Hotel , Page-green , when brethren resident in the neighbourhood will always meet with a hearty welcome . The Lodge , Dalhousie , No . 720 ( S . C ) , Bonnyrigg , was consecrated on Tuesday , the 2 nd inst ., and when the ceremonies of consecration and installation had been

completed , the brethren adjourned to a banquet at the Bonnyrigg Town Hall . The Gallery Lodge , No . 192 S , will give a concert at Brixton Hall to-morrow ( Saturday ) in aid of the Benevolent Fund of the lod ge . A strong array of musical talent , both vocal and instrumental , has been engaged , Bro . VV . Ganz , P . G . Org ., being one of the number .

Bro . A . Petts was installed W . M . of the Temple Lodge , No . 55 S , Folkestone , on the 2 nd inst ., the ceremony being performed by Bro . Hart , P . M ., in a very able manner . The lodge and its guests afterwards dined together at the Pavilion Hotel , and spent a very agreeable evening together .

A most successful ball was given on Frida y evening , the sth inst ., at the Breadalbane Arms Hotel , Aberfeldy , under the auspices of the Breadalbane Lodge , 657 ( S . C . ) There was a numerous attendance , and dancing was kept up with great spirit till an early hour the following morning .

R . W . Bro . Capt . S . G . Homfray will be installed Prov . G . Mark Master of Monmouthshire , at the Masonic Hall , Newport , on Monday , the 29 th inst ., the ceremony being performed by Bro . R . C Else , P . G . D ., Prov . G . M . M . of Somersetshire . The new D . P . G . M . M . M ., who will also be installed in olfice , is Bro . Major A . Thrale Perkins .

A Committee of Frome Masons has been appointed with a view to considering what will be the most advisable steps to take in order to secure greater accommodation than is provided by the present hall , and the cost thereof . The report was to be delivered at an adjourned meeting of the brethren . A highly interesting lecture was given on the 3 rd

inst . in the presence of the members of the Lodge Glasgow Kil winning , No . 4 , by Bro . the Rev . T . Somerville , the subject chosen being * ' The Symbols of Freemasonry . " The lecture was listened to with the deepest interest , and at its close thc lodge passed a cordial vote of thanks to the rev . brother , and affiliated him as an honorary member . The annual meeting of the Gosport Lodge ,

No . 903 , took place at the India Arms Hotel on Tuesday , the t ) th inst . There was a numerous attendance of members and visitors , and , when the preliminary business had been disposed of , Bro . J . E . Thornton was installed . W . M . by his predecessor in ofiice , Bro . J . Dempsey , and having received the salutations of the brethren , appointed his officers for the ensuing year . The second annual ball of the Albert Edward

Lodge , No . 17 S 0 , Southampton , was held at the Masonic Hall , Albion-place , on Wednesday , the ioth inst . There was a goodly company of some So ladies and brethren , and as a dispensation had been granted to the brethren to appear in their Masonic clothing , the scene was a brilliant one . Thc services of Mr . Faulkner ' s quadrille band were engaged for the evening , and the catering of Mr . Etheridge gave every satisfaction . The ball , in fact , proved a great success .

The ball given by the Selwyn Lodge , No . IQOI , at the Peckham Public Hall , on Friday , the 5 th inst ., proved a very great success . The VV . M . and members of the lodge fully entered into the spirit of the thing , and , under their direction , a numerous company of lady and other visitors most thoroughly enjoyed themselves . Nor was the entertainment confined to dancing , there being

singing and instrumental music and recitations in certain rooms set apart for the purpose . A capital supper was provided , and the different rooms were verv prettily and tastefully decorated . Bro . R . W . Powles , W . M ., and Bro . A . J . Bellis , P . M ., Hon . Secretary of the Stewards' Committee , are to be congratulated on the admirable manner in which everything was carried out .

Bro . J . T . 1 hackara was installed W . M . of the Portsmcurh Lodge , No . 4 S 7 , on Thursday , the nth inst . The ceremony was to have been pel formed by R . VV . Bro . W . W . B . Beach , M . P ., P . G . M . Hants and the Isle of Wight ; but a severe sore throat prevented him from attending , and his duties were carried out in an examplary manner by Bro . Frost , P . M . In the course of the

proceedings a P . M . ' s jewel was presented to the retiring W . M ., Bro . H . \ l . Loader , in recognition of his services during the past year , while the services of the newlyappointed S . W ., Bro . J . VV . Boughton , as Past Secretary of the lodge , were rewarded with a handsome Secretary ' s jewel . The banquet followed at the Albany Hotel , Landport , "The Health of the new W . M . " being cordially proposed by Bro . J . E . Le Feuvre , D . P . G . M ,

Bro . Edgar Bowyer has been re-elected on the Council of the Royal Hospital for Diseases of the Chest for the ensuing year . Bro . the Marquis of Hartington , M . P ., was prevented by a severe cold from attending in his place in the House of Commons during the early part of the week Bro . F . \ V . Potter , of Queen Victoria-street ,

E . C , has been elected W . M . of the Great City Lodge , No . 1426 , and will be installed at the ensuing meeting in October . Bro . Henry Stokes , of the Stock Exchange , was elected W . M . of the Honor Oak Lodge , No . 19 S 6 , for the ensuing year , at the last meeting of the lodge on the ioth instant .

Bros . Alderman Sir R . N . Fowler , Bart ., M . P ., Viscount Bury and Lieut .-Gen . Feilden , M . P ., were among the principal guests at the house dinner , on Monday , ofthe City Constitutional Club . Bro . Jasper More , M . P ., is Chairman of a Committee composed of members of Parliament who have

joined together for the purpose of looking after agricultural interests in Parliament . Bro . Admiral Sir W . King Hall has had conferred upon him the flag officer's good service pension , value £ 300 per annum , vacant by the death of Admiral Sir C . K . A . Shadwell .

Bro . W . W . Black , Grand T y ler of Indiana , attained his 75 th year on the ist January , when he was presented by some friends with a purse containing dollars corresponding in number with the years he had lived . Bro . Lord Herschell , Lord Chancellor of England , will unveil the statue and memorial in the Central Hall of the Royal Courts of Justice , Strand , to the late

Mr . Street , R . A ., on Wednesday next , the 24 th instant . Bro . the Lord Mayor has made a further appeal to the public on behalf of the unemployed , pointing out that the long continuance of our severe winter has materially added to the distress . At the Committee meeting at the Mansion House , on Friday , the 12 th inst ., the amount already received was announced as £ 69 , 700 .

Among the guests at the Speaker s second Parliamentary full-dress dinner this season on Wednesday were Bros . Sir M . E . Hicks-Beach , Bart ., M . P ., Lord A . Hill , M . P ., Hon . H . S . Bro . the Lord Mayor presided at a meeting held at the Mansion House on Friday , the 12 th inst ., for the purpose of promoting the interests of King ' s College Hospital , an institution which does an immense amount of good , but is greatly in need of funds . The meeting , which was both numerous and influential , pledged itself to use its best efforts to promote the end in view .

The Devon Mark Lodge , No . 215 , held its annual meeting at the Masonic Hall , Newton Abbott , on Monday , the ist inst ., when Bro . C . G . Vicary was installed VV . M . by Bro . H . Martin , P . M ., P . P . G . R . There was a numerous gathering of the brethren , among them being R . W . Bro . J . Tanner Davy , P . G . M . M . of Devonshire , and Bro . the Rev . T . VV . Lemon , Grand Mark Chaplain of England . The usual banquet followed .

The Hervey . Lodge , No . 16 92 , Hayes , gave a ball at the White Hart , Bromley , Kent , on Monday , the Sth inst ., R . W . Bro . Lord Holmesdale , P . G . M ., having very kindly given his sanction to the brethren wearing their Masonic clothing and regalia . THB GRAND LODGE OV ILLINOIS . — The following paragraph appears in the AVro York Herald of the 4 th March : " The Prince of VVales , as Grand Master of the British Freemasons , has withdrawn the patent of appointment from the representative of the Grand Lodge of England at the Grand Lodge of Illinois , the latter having severed fraternal relations with the English lodges of Montreal . A Committee of Frome Masons has been appointed with a view to considering what will be the most advisable steps to take in order to secure greater accommodation than is provided by the present hall , and the cost thereof . The report was to be delivered at an adjourned meeting of the brethren . A highly interesting lecture was given on the 3 rd

inst . in the presence of the members of the Lodge Glasgow Kil winning , No . 4 , by Bro . the Rev . T . Somerville , the subject chosen being * ' The Symbols of Freemasonry . " The lecture was listened to with the deepest interest , and at its close thc lodge passed a cordial vote of thanks to the rev . brother , and affiliated him as an honorary member . The annual meeting of the Gosport Lodge ,

No . 903 , took place at the India Arms Hotel on Tuesday , the t ) th inst . There was a numerous attendance of members and visitors , and , when the preliminary business had been disposed of , Bro . J . E . Thornton was installed . W . M . by his predecessor in ofiice , Bro . J . Dempsey , and having received the salutations of the brethren , appointed his officers for the ensuing year . Lodge , No . 17 S 0 , Southampton , was held at the Masonic Hall , Albion-place , on Wednesday , the ioth inst . There was a goodly company of some So ladies and brethren , and as a dispensation had been granted to the brethren to appear in their Masonic clothing , the scene was a brilliant one . Thc services of Mr . Faulkner ' s quadrille band were engaged for the evening , and the catering of Mr . Etheridge gave every satisfaction . The ball , in fact , proved a great success .

The ball given by the Selwyn Lodge , No . IQOI , at the Peckham Public Hall , on Friday , the 5 th inst ., proved a very great success . The VV . M . and members of the lodge fully entered into the spirit of the thing , and , under their direction , a numerous company of lady and other visitors most thoroughly enjoyed themselves . Nor was the entertainment confined to dancing , there being

singing and instrumental music and recitations in certain rooms set apart for the purpose . A capital supper was provided , and the different rooms were verv prettily and tastefully decorated . Bro . R . W . Powles , W . M ., and Bro . A . J . Bellis , P . M ., Hon . Secretary of the Stewards' Committee , are to be congratulated on the admirable manner in which everything was carried out .
