GREAT PUIORY OF CANADA AND SCOTCH TEMPLARS . To thc Editor of the "Freemason . " Dear Sir and Brother , My gallant and erudite liro . Colonel McLeod Moore , G . C . T ., Great Prior of Canada , has forwarded to me as Representative of the Great Priory in England , an

important statement relative to the position of the National Great Priory of Canada , and certain local Prioiies or Encampments of Knight Templars in Canada deriving their authority from the Chapter General of Scotland , now ruled by that eminent Mason the Earl of Rosslyn , as Grand Master . Great Priory having now freed itself from the control of

Convent General , claims absolute jurisdiction in Canada throughout the dominion , and the Scottish knights do not seem to see their way clear to give up their independence or allegiance to Scotland . It appears to me , as I think it will to your readers generally , that the Scottish sir knights are now in a false and anomalous position , and it would be much better for them

and for the Order in Canada if they would seek to be absolved from their allegiance to the Grand Master of Scotland , and then they might throw in their lot with the English Canadian Templars , who would , no doubt , give them a hearty welcome and a full share of the honours of the Great Priory . There can bc no question but that absolution would bc as readily granted by the Earl of Rosslyn as by the Prince of Wales , when a like request was made to him by the

Great Priory of Canada , and surely the fratres across thc water do not need to be reminded of the fable of the bundle of sticks , or the time honoured proverb that union is strength . I trust you will be able to find room in the columns of the Freemason , which is read all over the world , for the statements of both the Scottish Templars and the Great Prior of Canada , my venerable and learned friend Col . M'Cleod Moore . —I am , sir and brother , yours in the bonds ,

EMRA HOLMES , K . C . T ., Prov . Prior of Canada , I' . G . Provost of England . FREEMASONRY IN THE COLONIES . To the Editor of the " Freemason . " Dear Sir and Brother , The institution of a new Craft lodge under the Scottish Constitution has drawn attention here to the anomalous position occupied by Freemasonry in the Colonies . It has long been conceded that thc existence of lodges

under the English , Irish , and Scotch Constitutions in one locality is detrimental to the general interest of all . Too often such lodges are called into existence without consulting the good of the Craft , for various personal reasons , and by disaffected members , for the well-chosen rule that no new lodge will be instituted without consulting the wishes of

existing lodges will not apply when members can obtain a charter from another Constitution . For instance , the Atlantic Phoenix Lodge , No . 224 , in Hamilton , Bermuda , has had a flourishing existence for nearly 100 years , and is certainly well able to do all the Masonic work that would be required in a town of less than 1000 inhabitants . The Master of a neighbouring English lodge—Broad Arrow , No . 1 S 00—Surgeon-Major Campbell , on being stationed in
