THE UNEMPLOYED IN EAST LONDON . —At a time when much thought is being given to this matter , a practical suggestion may be of service . Last year more than £ 300 , 000 worth of foreign matches were purchased by inconsiderate consumers in this country , so true is it

that evil is wrought by want of thought , as well as want of heart . Quite lately " The Armada " was produced at the Grand . Mr . Harris , who pays able stage managers to do his work , might well have been expected to leave the matter in their hands . Not at all . He turned up at rehearsal , and insisted on the whole of the scenery being moved , in his presence , across the stage . He , Julius Creiar , and Miles Standish opine or opined that it you

want a thing done well you must do it yourself . He has the essentially English bump of organisation enormously developed . That is the secret of his success . This leaves a balance of £ . 6400 , towards which Mr . Henry Tate has generously offered £ . IOOD , providing the remainder is obtained within the next four

months . A most successful Smoking Concert was recently held at Freemasons' Hall , Mount Pleasant , Plumstead , under the auspices of the Masonic Buildings Corporation . The Deputy Chairman , Bro . the Derby Lodge , No 724 , attended in exceptionally great numbers to pay their last respects to two highly esteemed membeis of the lodge—namely , Bros Quayle , late J . W ., and Clayton , Secretary . The circumstances were particulary sad from the fact that these two olficers died on

the same day . The remains of Bro . Clayton were taken to his family vault at Much Wenlock , Shropshire , a number of officers and members attending at the railway to witness the departure . In the midst of a large concourse of brethren and friends the body of Bro . Quayle was interred at Anfield Cemetery .

The Crystal Palace Company ' s School of Art , Science , and Literature continues to flourish . was very hearty . Bro . John Maclean made his first semi-public appearance on Tuesday night since his return from the break-up of Miss Mary Anderson ' s Company . Br ., who died at Totnes on Friday , the 5 th inst ., aged 45 years , took place on Thursday , the nth inst ., at the Totnes Cemetery , and was largely attended . Brethren met at the lodge , having obtained a dispensation to attend the funeral in Masonic clothing . The lodge having been opened , the Rev . I . Powning , P . P-

G . C , repeated the burial service , and then the brethren in procession walked to the residence of the deceased , a large number of the members of the lodge and visitors attending . The service was read by the Rev . B . Mills , vicar of Totnes , and , at the conclusion , the Chap lain of deceased ' s lodge offered a prayer . After the interment the brethren marched in reversed order back to the residence ,

and thence to the lodge , which was then closed . The ceremony was impressively conducted by Bro . Drennan . Mr . H . Worth , organist , played " Oh , rest in the Lord on the procession entering the church , and the Dead March in " Saul " on leaving . Nearly all shops were closed , and the blinds of private houses were drawn during the funeral .

HOLLOWAY ' S OINTMENT AND PILLS . —Few persons are so faicured by circumstances , or so fortified by nature , as to enable ' ™? * c to pass unscathed the sore trials of an inclement season . . y catarrhs , coughs , and influenzas everywhere abounding , it stiou 1 be universally known that Holloway ' s Ointment , diligently mbbe upon the chest , checks the worst assaults of these maladies , an securely wards off more grave and dangerous diseases of tlie thro and lungs . The truth of this assertion must remain unquestion in the face of thousands of unimpeachable living witnesses , * have personally derived the utmost possible benefits from this , tr ^ mentwhen their present sufferings were appalling , and their tu prospects most disheartening .
