Reports Of Masonic Meetings.
Ihe W . M . would be supported by the members and officers he ventured to predict , and that he would have a successful year of office he felt certain , and trusted that at the end of that term Bro . George Price might not feel older than he did at the present time . The VV . M . had been pleased to refer to the last successful provincial meeting , which success was due to the excellent arrangements made by one whom
he was pleased to see piesent that night—Bro . Pile , P . M . ; and this year , when the Prov . G . Lotige visited a lodge which was looked after so carefully by Bro . Hugh Sandeman , he venttfred to say they would be as well treated at Ca ' erham as they were at Carshalton . Bro . Sir John Monckton had told them he was a great stickler for provincial Masonry , and for the way in which the work was done there . He agreed with him , and was sure that if he
visited a few lodges in Surrey he would find good working . The lodges in that province did their best to carry out their various Masonic duties , and , from his experience , would bear comparison with any lodges in the country . He begged to thank them for the kind way in which they had received the toast , and the peculiar position in which he wss placed that ever ing , and he thanked the Grand Officers who had come down to do honour to the province on that
auspicious occasion . Bro . Hugh M . Hobbs , Prov . J . G . W ., replied for "The Prov . G . Olficers , " and , after returning thanks , said there were no " -urrey Masons who more deeply regretted the loss of their Prov . G . M . than the Prov . G . Olficers , and there were none who rejoiced more heartily that they had in Bro- West one so thoroughly able to carry out the work of
his high position , and they desired more than ever to assist him in all the duties of his office . They had listened to the eloquent speeches of congratulation and hearty good wishes to the VV . M . for the position he occupied forthe second time , and there was no brother more delighted in lhat brilliant assembly than hirrself . He was fortunate in being one of the founders of a lodge and chapter bearing
Bro . George Price's name , and he should always consider those events as his greatest Masonic achievements . He was never so proud of his Provincial Grand Office as that day , when he was able to take part in the proceedings . Bro . Chas . Greenwood , Prov . G . Sec . Surrey , endorsed the sentiments expressed by Bro . Hobbs . He said that , although that was so unique an ocrasion in the history of
Frr emasonry , they had not far to go to find a parallel case , inasmuch as live years ago the jubilee of an old Surrey Lodge was celebrated , at which Bro . Ambrose Hall , who was initiated in the lodge , presided as VV . M ., and was installed for the second time . The VV . Master that night was elected as the Prov . G . Treasurer some 33 years ago . It was his painful pleasure to recollect that at that time his
own father stood by the side of Bro . Geo . Pnc < -, and was appointed Prov . G . Secretary . One had been taken , and the other was left—left , he hoped , to do good suit and service for the Craft in which he had laboured so long and earnestly , and to assist for many years in the working of this old and esteemed lodge . It was always a matter for congratulation by the Prov . G . Officers to see another
lodge consecrated , but to see an old lodge attain its 50 th year was a matter for greater congratulation . This lodge had seen the Prov . G . Lodge in its third year , and had seen three successive Prov . G . Masters hold office who either resigned or were called to the Grand Lodge above . From the constitution of this lodge there was every reason to hope and believe that it would remain in its present
prosperous condition until it had celebrated its centenary , and might he be present to see it ! Bro . Dr . F . Nicholls , I . P . M ., said it was with feelings of great responsibility that he rose to propose " The Health of the VV . M ., " for , after the eloquence that had overwhelmed them , he felt how difficult it would be to do justice to it . When there were so many visitors present of such
high positions , t ' ne brethren would feel with him that their position placed the VV . M . in such a pedestal of love and regard that no words were needed from him . This toast that night was not of the ordinary kind , because Bro . Geo Price was not an ordinary Mason . Their W . M . was one whom they desired to honour , and whom they had elected
to the highest position in the lodge , and who had done honour to them by accepting it . They hoped that through the coming year he would be spared with health and strength to fill his high office . If he ( the I . P . M . ) had not done justice to the toast , it was his misfortune , not his fault , and the brethren could compensate for it by their hearty reception .
Bro . George Pr ' ce , Prov . G . Treas ., VV . M ., in response , said : 1 have to offer you my sincere thanks for the very kind , and I may say nice , manner in which you , Brother I . P . M ., have proposed my health . You complain of the want of eloquence , but I am sure it did not lack sincerity , and I beg to thank you , brethren , for the very hearty and kind manner in which you received the toast . It is 4 C years
ago since I was first W . M . of this lodge , and now I find myself , in this jubilee year , again honoured by being placed in this chair . _ I he brethren considered and looked upon me as being a link connecting the present with the pas- , and as being in touch with this jubilee year and that early period when the lodge was in its infancy , and accordingly determined to ask me to be the W . M . I felt that it was a great
kindness and honour to ask me , but it wanted some consideration , for being nearly So years of ape , it is rather late in life to undeibike the duties of W . M . of a lodge . My cogitations were cut short by the Secretary , who mentioned it at the last banquet of the lodge , when it evoked such a demonstration and such a desire that I should be the VV Master , that I gave way , and determined to accept the
honour they were fo desirous of conferring . It will be agreeable to you if I can give you a short history of the lodge . It was consecrated in 1 S 39 by Bro . Lord Monson the then Prov . Grand Master , at Carshalton . It remained there thice years , and then removed to the Ship Inn opposite the present Town Hall of Croydon , where it stayed five j ears , and was then removed to this house , its present
place ot meeting , where it has existed over 40 years . It is a lodge that has introduced into Freemasonry many worthy brethren , and very distinguished W . Masters have filled the chair . It has had its difficulties , its ups and downs ; its financial position has not always been good , and I wonder whether that is not always the case with young lodges .
We surmounted those difficulties , and the lodge for some years past and at the present time is one of the most powerful and most prosperous lod ges in the province . In congratulating you upon the prosperity of the lodge you will , I am sure , all desire that that prosperity may continue , and that the lodge may prosper in the future , and I hope and sincerely pray also that ils onward course may be

assisted by that brotherly love and concord which so thoroughly prevails at the present moment . Bro . C . H . Woodward , P . M ., Sec , said the W . M . had asked him to give the next toast , that of "The Visitors . " They were honoured with a goodly array of visiting brethren , whom he thanked for their attendance . Bro . Greenwood had referred to the instance of Bro . Hall ; but
that was not a parallel case , as that brother was an initiate , and their VV . M . that evening was for the second time placed in the chair . Their W . M . occupied a very unique position , for he was the oldest P . M . and member of the lodge , and was installed 4 6 years ago . He would call upon Bro . Turner , P . P . G . Chap . Surrey , and Bro . Philbrick , G . Reg ., from the neighbouring County of Essex , to
respond . Bro . Rev . H . Turner , P . P . G . Chap . Surrey , replied , and said he was glad to find the W . Master did not , like Macbeth , find his May of life turn into the sear and yellow leaf , for it was still fresh with the kindliness of youth . He had the honour of preaching a sermon in Jubilee year to the provincial meeting , but he felt it a greater honour to
have taken any part , however humble , in the proceedings that night . Bro . F . A . Philbrick , G . Reg ., Dep . Prov . G . Master Essex , in reply , said he desired to express the great satisfaction—and he thought he might presume to speak on behalf of several brethren whom he saw in the room from his own province—and the great pleasure it gave them to
attend that evening to mark the jubilee of this lddgc and the happy occasion which told them that , after so long an interval as 47 years , Bro . George Price had been again placed in the chair of K . S . Every Mason who heard the sound of his voice would agree that the VV . Master was a man whom they all delighted to honour . It was sometimes thrown at them by the outside world who knew not their
secret-, and who supposed that Masonry was a secret Society banded together for purposes different to that which they who professed it well knew it existed for ; it was , he thought , a very proud answer they were able to give —that time did not diminish its charms ; that age and experience did not fall upon the true Mason's heart . On the part of the province which he represented—not so
numerous in lodges or brethren as this province—let him say that they sympathised with Surrey in the loss it had sustained in his old friend , Bro . General Brownrigg , who was a true-hearted and zealous Mason , and they hoped that in due time it would please the M . W . G . M . to give to the province a head whom it would look up to and esteem , and in whom Masonry would continue and flourish , proving
itself to be the great power for good it was . He had to return thanks for the kindness and brotherly reception , and trusted that the good Masonic feeling which prevailed between the two Provinces of Essex and Surrey might ever continue , and he hoped it would be his good fortune to extend the same kind welcome in his own province that had been shown the visitors that night .
The Worshipful Master next gave "The Past Masters , " on whom he said the power and prosperity of the lodge depended . They were particularly fortunate in having P . M . 's who possessed the confidence of the members . The P . M . he wished to draw their attention to was their I . P . M ., Bro . Dr . Nicholls , who had made his mark in their lodge for his knowledge , and the ceremonies , and the ritual ,
and for the courteous , genial , and kind manners in which he had ruled them . Bro . Dr . Nicholls had proved himself a VV . M . of no ordinary ability , and in retiring from the chair , he carried with him the good will and the esteem of every member of the lodge . Bro . Dr . Nicholls , I . P . M ., said that in ameeeting where so much kindly feeling was exhibited , he found it a
difficult matter to thank them for the manner in which his health had been proposed and received . The P . M . ' s had always been the backbone of the lodge . They had during the past year encouraged and assisted all the members , and during the forthcoming term of office would be happy
to assist the W . M . should he require it . "The Treasurer and Secretary" and "The Officers " were given , and the Tyler's toast closed an interesting , unique , and successful meeting . Bro . H . L . Balfour ably presided at the pianoforte , and several brethren assisted in the harmony of the evening .
