Z ., the Treasurer , and the Scribe E . are to be congratulated upon , the successful manner in which the proceedings were carried out .

W . 37 ( previously balloted for ) , they were admitted and exalted to the Degree of Royal Arch by Comp . John

Booth , Z ., the duties of P . S . being discharged by Comp . W . Forrest . It was agreed that in future the chapter meet three times a year , namely , on the third Monday in February , May , and November . A grant of £ 5 was made from the chapter funds towards the expenses incurred in furnishing the Freemasons' Hall . The Scribe E . intimated that at the recent annual meeting of Prov . G . Chapter the

following Bolton companions had been appointed as Prov . G . Officers , viz . : Comps . E . G . Harwood , P . Z . 221 , Prov . G . Scribe E . j John Booth , Z . 37 , Prov . G . ist A . The hearty congratulations of the chapter were tendered to them on their preferment .

" Hearty good wishes were expressed by the visiting companions , and the chapter was then closed , and the companiorsadjourned to the banquet room , where a pleasant and agreeable evening was spent . The usual loyal and Masonic toasts were duly honoured . In the course of the evening Comp . VV . Forrest , P . S ., proposed a special toast to " The Health of Comp .

Newton , P . P . G . S . N . and Prov . A . G . S . E ., " and in doing so mentioned that this month was the completion of Comp . Newton's quarter of a century since his initiation into Freemasomy , in April , 1 S 64 . He also referred to the great services rendered by Comp . Newton to the Royal Aich Degree in Bolton since his exaltation in 1 S 66 , and that mainly to bis exertions for many years the Degree had

been kept up , and was now flourishing to a greater extent than had been the case in the past . The toast was heartily received and honoured , and Comp . Newton suitably responded , and in doing so gave some of his experiences of the difficulties of maintaining an interest in the Degree in years gone bv , also of the

fluctuations in membership of the Concord Chapter from time to time , and commented upon the fact of thc chapter being the senior in Lancashire , having evidence that the Degree had been regularly worked in connection with the lodge ever since 176 S . The proceedings were enlivened by a few songs from Comps . Mort , Woolmer , Thompson , and Brockbank . BARROW - IN - FURNESS . — Henry Cook Chapter ( No . 1021 ) . —The regular monthly meeting of this the youngest chapter upon the roll of West Lancashire was held on Wednesday , the ioth inst ., at the Masonic Hall , when two candidates ( out of 1 1 accepted at the last meeting ) were present , and duly exalted to this Supreme Degree by the M . E . Z ., the lectures being given by the J ., H ., and M . E . Z . respectively . Too much praise

cannot be given for the excellent working of all the officers , particularly the M . E . Z . and the P . S . Comp . C . P . Richards , P . Z .. Prov . G . S . N ., rose , and , addressing the M . E . Z . and companions , said a pleasing duty had been entrusted to him , which he could have wished had been placed in the hands of some more able companion ; but , for two reasons , it was considered most

desirable he should undertake it . First , because he had rendered some slight services towards the formation of this chapter , and secondly , on account of his position as a present Prov . Grand Officer . Before he proceeded to discharge that duty , he wished on his own account , and he felt sure he could speak on behalf of the other P . Z . ' s present , to express the exceeding pleasure it had given them to witness

the ceremony of exaltation so ably and correctly performed by the M . E . Z ., his co-Principals , and subordinate officers . That was the more gratifying , as it assured them , as year succeeded year , and the companions in the minor offices in their turn ultimately arrived at the distinguished office now so worthily filled , that the sublime ceremonies of this Degree would be rendered and its ancient traditions

maintained in a manner worthy of Koyal Arch Masonry and of the chapter which bears the M . E . Z . ' s name . It would probably be remembered by the M . E . Z . that at the banquet which followed the consecration of this chapter a sum of money was collected from each subscribing member of the chapter as his proportion of cost of the same banquet , and which would

, in due course , have been applied to that purpose , but when the M . E . Z . so generously discharged all the liabilities then incurred , the companions were placed in somewhat of a difficulty . They could not insult Comp . Cook by offering him the money , neither would the companions receive their quota back again . It was then suggested by the 2 nd and 3 rd Principals , and he need not say unanimously and

heartily agreed to by the companions , that a portion of such money should be expended in the purchase of a Founder ' s jewel , which it was his pleasing duty that evening to offer for their M . E . Z . ' s acceptance , and in doing so he could but feebly and inadequately express the feelings of

all the companion ? , that Comp . Cook might be long spared in the enjoyment of good health to come among them to cheer them by his presence and to inspire them to a faithful discharge of their respective duties , by the example he had always set throughout his long and distinguished Masonic

career . This was followed by R . A . honours , led by Comp . R . VV . Worrall , P . Z ., P . P . G . D . of C . The M . E . Z ., in reply , said he was very much taken by surprise , and could only express his great gratification at the remarks of Comp . Richards , and the hearty feelings expressed by the companions in presenting him with such

a beautiful jewel , which he should always wear with pleasure . He could assure them he should always endeavour to be present at the meetings of the chapter , as he considered it a very great honour to have the chapter named after him . The jewel , which is similar to the one worn by the remaining founders ( 15 innumber ) , was designed and manufactured by Comp . George Kenning , and is a beautiful specimen of

the goldsmith s art . It bore the following inscription : — " Presented to E . Comp . H . Cook , first Z ., as a mark of the very high esteem in which he is held by the companions . April ioth , 1 SS 9 . " The chapter was subsequently closed , and the companions adjourned to the supper-room , where dinner was served , presided over by the M . E . Z ., at which the usual loyal and Royal Arch toasts were duly honoured .

YORK . —Eboracum Chapter ( No . 1611 ) . —A meeting of this chapter was held in Freemasons' Hall , St . Saviourgate , on Tuesday , the 2 nd instant . Present : Comps . Wm . Brown , M . E . Z . ; Geo . Simpson , P . Z ., as H . ; J . Blenkin , P . Z ., as J ., T . B . Whytehead , P . Z . j J . T . Seller , P . Z . ; Jas . Kay , S . E . ; G . Chapman , P . S . ; H . Longford , F . W . Halliwell , P . Pearson , 1 . L . Spetch ,

W . Sharp , and others . Comp . IT . C . Pickersgill , P . Z . S 37 , was a visitor . Ballots were taken for two candidates , and Bro . F . R . Hansell , 1416 , was exalted by the M . E . Z ., the mystical lecture being given by Comp . T . B . Whytehead , P . Z .

The M . E . Z . proposed that a sum of £ 5 5 s . be voted by the chapter to the Educational Fund of the province , the first festival of which is to be held in May in York , and this was carried unanimously . The name of a candidate was proposed , and the chapter was closed , the companions afterwards meeting at supper .

adjourned to the banquet , which was most ably served by Comp . Buxton and assistants . The usual toasts followed . The M . E . Hinnell , both of lodge 37 , who were both unanimously elected , and , together with Bro . R . Nightingale , S .
