PROVINCIAL MEETINGS . ALDERNEY . St . Ann s Lodge ( No . 593 ) . — The regular meeting of this lodge was held on Tuesday , the gth inst ., and its proceedings are worthy of record , inasmuch as this was the first occasion the Provincial Grand Master cf Guernsey and Alderney , indeed , the first occasion that any

Grand Officer had ever visited this interesting little , lodge . It is not surprising , therefore , that quite an unusual stir of excitement was roused and the members of St . Ann's mustered in full force to receive their chief . Undeterred by the heavy fog which pervaded the Channel , Bro . Capt . Whales , the Experienced Commander of the Courier , the small steamer which keeps Alderney in touch with Guernsey

and Cherbourg , brought the Masonic party safely across , arriving at Alderney very late in the day it is true , but still in an pie time for the lodge . And anent this fog , it is a curious coincidence that local Masonic tradition informs us that some 35 years ago , at the time when Guernsey formed an adjunct of the Jersey Province—several Provincial Grand Ofiicers in Guernsey embarked one morning for

Alderney , but almost immed ' ately after starting they ran into a thick bank of fog , in which they were detained for so many hours that when a slight lift revealed the coast of Guernsey they at once returned home and the contemplated function in Alderney fell through . The lodge was opened by the W . M ., Bro . Gaudion , and the arrival of the P . G . M . having been announced , Bro .

Dr . Balfour Cockburn entered , accompanied by the following Prov . Grand Ofiicers : Bros . Colonel Guyon , S . W . ; J . T . Laine , Treas . ; VV . Lovell , S . D . ; G . F . Peek , Supt . of Works ; R . M . Smythson , Sec ; and R , VV . Rowcliffe , Purst . ; and was duly saluted . Happily two candidates were in attendance , and these were at once admitted and initiated , the ceremony being carried out in a most

excellent manner by the W . M ., Bro . Gaudion , assisted most ably and intelligently by Bro . Isles , S . W . ; Hawkins , J . W . j Mellish and Herivel , Deacons ; and Le Cocq , l . G . On the conclusion of the business and before the lodge was closed , the P . G . M . expressed his complete satisfaction with the proceedings of the evening . He congratulated the lodge on having so able and so accomplished a

W . M ., andthe VV . M . on being supported by officers so thoroughly up in their work . Knowing full well all the difficulties and disadvantages under which St . Ann ' s had to work in so small an island ; it was most pleasing to find so much zeal and energy and the light of Masonry burning so bright and clear . It reflected the greatest credit on the Past Masters and brethren of the lodge generally . 1 he

VV . M ., in reply , thanked the P . G . M . for his kind and encouraging remarks . He begged also ' to thank the Prov . Grand Officers , all of whom were so well known and so highly esteemed , for the trouble they had taken in accompanying the P . G . M . He was very pleased to be able to state that since they had been enrolled in the provincial association , a greater interest , more life , in facthad been

, mfused into their work , they no longer felt themselves isolated , unknown , and neglected . The goodly gathering that evening , the admission of two new members , and he might add , the immediate prospect of others , and the presence of so many visitors were proofs positive of this . He trusted that on some future occasion , and that before long , the P . G . M . would see his way to holding a Provincial

Grand Lodge in Alderney . The lodge was then closed and the brethren repaired to the banquet hall , where an excellent supper was prepared , to which ample justice was done , for the bracing air of Alderney , supplemented with a modicum of Channel fog , is a keen appetizer .

We cannot bring these few remarks to a close without adding just a word of commendation and praise to our ever cheery Bro . Renier , P . M , now the father of the lodge , as also its worthy Secretary . St . Ann ' s owes him much and we sincerely trust the debt will go on accumulating for many years .

CARLISLE . Bective Lodge ( No . 1532 ) . —On Wednesday , the 3 rd inst ., in the County Hotel , Bro . A . Taylor , P . M ., P . P . G . D . C , of the above lodge was installed as W . M . of the lodge with the usual ceremonial observed on such occasions . There was a large gathering of the brethren . Ihe lodge was opened by Bro . Mounsey-IIeysham , VV . M ..

and those present included : Bros . Col . Sewell , D . P . G . M Rev . J . Whiteside , P . G . Chap . ; Rev . C . McNally , P . G . Chap . Lanes , ; Twentyman Wigton , W . M . 327 ; and Cirant , W . Taylor into the chair as Master of the lodge , assisted by Bro . E . J . Burgess , I . P . G . D . C . The newly-installed W . M . invested his officers as follows : Bros . G . A . Kirkbride . P . M . The I . P . M ., Bro . Mounsey-Heysham , was presented

with a Past Master's jewel in recognition of his services as W . M . during the year . It bears the following inscription : "Presented to Bro . G . A . H . Mounsey-Heysham , P . M ., by the Brethren of Bective Lodge , No . 1532 , Carlisle , on his retirement from office as W . M ., April , 1 S 95 . " The presentation was made by Bro . A- Taylor , VV . iVl ., in a

complimentary speech , and the I . P . M . returned thanks in suilable terms . Bro . VVhite made some interesting observations in proposing the toast of " The P . G . M ., D . P . G . M ., and the rest of the P . G . Officers , Present and Past , " and the compliment was acknowledged in an appropriate manner by Bro . Colonel Sewell , as Dep . Prov . Grand Master .

And anent this fog , it is a curious coincidence that local Masonic tradition informs us that some 35 years ago , at the time when Guernsey formed an adjunct of the Jersey Province—several Provincial Grand Ofiicers in Guernsey embarked one morning for

The lodge was opened by the W . M ., Bro . Gaudion , and the arrival of the P . G . M . having been announced , Bro .
