end-all in Freemasonry . He had spoken about the social side of it ; if they could ge a man who could sing it was a good thing , but it was lot everything . If a man ' s characteristics were not those of Freemasonry , Masonry would not alter them , and , therefore , thev should be very careful whom they introduced . A man came into Freemasonry absolutely in the dark ; he did not know what it involved , or what expense was connected with it ; some believed they were providing for their wives and families ; but they should be disabused of such ideas . not able to come into it in a reasonably financial way he had better join the Foresters or Buffaloes . Masonrv involved expense ; it did not provide for a man's wife or family . Masonry was spreading no doubt—whether wisely or not he would not say—but before the Prince of Wales became Grand Master it wis verv much smaller . He could not help noticing when looking over the lists of candidates for the Institutions that many of those who had joined Fi eemasonry did so when they ought not , and spent money in it when

thev should not . He held strange views , perhaps , in these matters , but he hoped he was not putting them too far , and he had the courage of his opinions . It was , perhaps , because men did not say what they thought that things went drifting along . He was pleased to introduce Bro . Johnson that night , because he knew he was a man they could depend on in the future-Bro . Johnson returned thanks for the compliments paid him , and hoped he should prove a good Mason with the excellent example he had to follow .

Bro . Rowland Walter Nicole , I . P . M ., in leturmng thanks for the toast proposed in his honour , and for the handsome Past Master ' s jewel which was presented to him , said he had always taken an interest in the Kingswood Lodge , and the jewel he had received would always rank with him first in importance . Bro . Petch , P . M ., returned thanks as Treasurer , and Bro . Bell , as Secretary , to the toast of "The Treasurer and Secretary , " and the toists of "The Visitors" and " The Officers" were then given , honoured , and replied to , and the Tyler ' s toast closed a very pleasant day .

Rahere Lodge , No . 2546 . The first installation meeting of this important lodge was held on the yth instant in the Great Hall of St . Bartholomew's Hospital , E . M ., in returning thanks said he would wear the gift with the greatest possible pride as a souvenir of one of the happiest 3 ears of his Masonic life .

The lodge was closed and a banquet was subsequently held at the Frascati Restaurant , Oxford-street . The usual toasts were afterwards honoured , the W . M . in proposing "H . R . H . the Prince cf Wales , M . W . G . M ., " mentioned that His Royal Highness was President of their hospital and was present at the consecration of the lodge of which he was an honorary member .

Bro . Rev . C . J . Martyn , Dep . Prov . G . M . Suffolk , replying for "The Grand Officers , " said it was always a pleasant and responsible task to do so , but especially when he saw such a galaxy of Masonic beauty as surrounded him at that moment . It gave tlem all pleasure to witness the ceremonies of initiation and instillation , the performance of which by the I . P . M . left nothing to be desired . They had one and " all enjoyed lhe Masonic treat as well as the fraternal reception .

Bro . Clement Godson , P . G . D ., I . P . M ., proposed " The Health of the W . M ., " and said he went the other evening to the Aldephi Theatre to see a piece called " One of the Best , " and that very aptly described their VV . M . For nearly 20 years he had looked upon Bto . A'fred Cooper as his best friend . He was not unique in that respect , for he was not the only one who regarded the W . M . as his best friend . He could tell them in a very few words what the VV . M . was . First , Bro . Cooper was a good sportsman , and it would be a wary old cock that could get away from his gun . Three years ago it

was re corded in the sporting papers that it was Bro . Alfred Cooper who shot the grandest stag of tie y ^ ar—a 15-pointer . As a surgeon he had been elected on the council of the Rojal College of Su geons , of which he was justly proud . As a Mason he was a distinguished P . G . D . and a member of the 32 ° , so that he had only one more step to be at the top of the tree . As a St . Bartholomew ' s man , no one more loyal ever lived , always sending a patient to a " Barts " man wherever it was possible to do so . There was no doubt that as W . M . Bro . Cooper was the right man in the right place , and was aptly described as " one of the best . "

, B " > - Alfred Cooper , P . G . D ., W . M ., returned warm thanks for the kind wjrds of fhe I . P . M . He was sure those words came from the heart , and was grateful accordingly . He would say no m re on that subject , but propose "The Health of the I . P . M . " lhe amount of work done by the I . P . M . no brother knew except he who followed him-Bro . Godson had given up all his spare time to the lodge , and it was a much easier task to follow the first Master than to be the first Master .

Bro . C . Godson , P . G . D ., I . P . M ., in reply , said it had been the proudest year of his of rt "iC ° areer ' ° he the nrst W , Ml of that lod ffe- He had a ve r > ' tangible memento 01 that year of office in the beautiful jewel presented to him . Manchester Lodge , No . 2554 . The second installation meeting of this prosperous lodge was held on Friday , the i 2 th instant , at the Freemasons' Hall , Cooper-street , Manchester . There was a very large gathering of members and visitors on this auspicious occasion , inasmuch as Bro . Thos . Plumpton , S . VV ., W . M . elect , and Treasurer of the Freemasons' Hall Co ., was to be installed . Bro . Plumpton is a great favourite all round with all who have the privilege of knowing him , and it proved to be the case by the many friends who had assembled together ; some of them had come a great distance . The brethren met at three o ' clock .

The lodge was opened by Bro . VV . B . Akermin , P . M ., W . M . T he minutes of the previous meeting having been read and confirmed and the balance-sheet having been submitted and adopted , which proved to be in a most prosperous condition , although the lodge has been most generous to the Chaiities , and we feel quite sure that underthe guidance and ruling of Bro . Plumpton , VV . M ., who is now its head , will still go on and be as prosperous as ever . The Installing Master was Bro . A . Jefferis , P . M ., P . P . G . M .. a most magnificent Past Master's jewel , remarking , although it was valuable in itself , its

value was small in comparison with the love and affection they had for him . Bro . Akernian suitably responded . The following brethren were present -. Bros . VV . B . Akerman , P . M ., W . Furnival Lodge , No . 2558 . Twelve months ago when the above lodge was founded and consecrated we ventured to prophesy . This in ordinary circumstances is dou ' itless a rash proceeding but we believed we were justified in doing so for briefly these very good reasons . First of all a new lodge was neededj seonJly its promoters were men of c ' uracier anil posHijn , and lastly the circumstances under which it commenced its cireer were singularly auspicious and favourable . Taking all these nutters into consideration we predicted that the Furnival Lodge would establish an undoubted raison- d ' etre , would miintain

the high character of our Order and would in all respects discharge fully its Masonic duties . A year has elapsed , and on Friday , the 12 th inst ., the first anniversary of its formation was kept and its second Worshipful Master was installed . It will be seen from our account of the proceedings that the new lodge has fully sustained its character and more than justified the opinions formed at its commencement . There was a large gathering . The W . M ., Bro . C Stokes opened the lodge , and was supported by a full complement of his officers , and amongst others lhe following : Bros . G . IT . Hutchinson ,

James , W . S . Miner , and F . Caitivright , of 2491 . After the minutes had been read and put for confirmation , and the Grand and Provincial Grand Officers had been saluted , Bro . H . T . E . Holmes , P . P . G . D . C , presented

the VV . M . elect , Bro . G . H . Hutchinson , in the usual terms to the Installing Master , Bro . Charles Stokes . The ceremony of installation was at once proceeded with , the retiring Master acquitting himself in a manner which was much appreciated and admired . A pleasing feature of the function was the small , but effective , pirt played by officers of three of the oldest lodges in Sheffield—Bros . Middleton , 139 ; Ensor Drury , 296 ; and T . Ii . Barker , 1239—who presented and explained the working tools in the several Degree- -. The addresses to the VV . M ., Wardens , and brethren were most

eloquently given by Bro . Charles Stokes . To shev the interest taken in the Furnival Lodge , it should be specially noted that each Sheffield lodge wis represented by its W . M ., and that the Board of Installed Masters numbered 2 $ . Bro . G . H . Hutchinson , the new VV . M ., was initiated in the Wentworth Lodge , No . 1239 , in iSSy , by Bro . A . Simonson . Owing to its great numerical strength , the prospect of getting to the VVorshipful Master ' s chair in that hdge had been remote even unto hopelessness . This has long been felt , and was , in fact , one of the chief causes for the formation of the Furnival

Lodge . Bro . Hutchinson being a man of sterling character and excellent repute , was welcomed by Bro . Charles Stokes and others , and became one of the founders and the first S . W . of the new lodge . Succeeding Bro . Stokes , he now becomes the second W . M ., and thus attains the coveted position which ould not have been his in his mother lodge except after years of patient waiting . Himself in the prinu of life , he has selected a band of young and zealous oilicers , whom he invested as follows : Bros . C Stokes , P . M . 1239 , I . P . M . ; Rev . Geo . Ford , M . A ., S . W ; Claude Barker . I . W . j

Albt . Davidson , treas . j Walter Fearnehough , Sec . j R . P . Fisher , S . D . j Walter Sissons , I . D . j H . Cawood , D . of C j W . J . Maidment , Org . ; Ernest Beck , I . G . ; and B . J . Taylor and H . E . Schnelzler , Stwds . That the feeling between the W . M . and his ofiicers is an excellent one might be deduced from the pleasant and most kindly remarks which were addressed to each on investment , whilst the popularity of tlieir appointment was unmistakeably shown by the applause of the brethren assembled . The installation and investiture being completed , the- business on the agenda was

commenced . The chief item was the selection of a Charity Steward to represent the lodge on the VVest Yorkshire Charity Committee . Bro . Chas . Stokes was unanimously elected to that office , and in thanking the brethren , assured them that well as they had done in the past , he intended the future to show much better results . The Secretary being called upon for communications , announced apologies for non-attendance from the Prov . Grand Master , the Right Hon . W . Lawies Jackson , M . P . ; Bro . Henry Smith , P . D . P . G . M . ; and the Worshipful Masters of the Scarsdale , Phcenix , and Wharncliffe Lodges . Bro . W . L . Jackson ' s letter , which was read , was as follows :

M ., P . P . G . W ., and he appointed as his Installing Oilicers Bros . A . 11 . DutTin , P . P . G . D C , as S . W .:

Bro . Plumpton , S . W ., VV . M . elect , was presented to the Installing Master by Bro . Arnold , and the ceremony was performed in a faultless manner by Bro . Arthur Jefferis . The newly-elected Master was duly saluted , greeted , and proclaimed in the different Degrees . Bro . Arnold explained the working tools , Bro . James Bent , P . M ., addressed the Master , and Bro . M .. a most magnificent Past Master's jewel , remarking , although it was valuable in itself , its

value was small in comparison with the love and affection they had for him .
