The brethren adjourned to refreshments , which were excellent in quality and quantity , and gave great credit to Bro . Tarry who supplied them , as well as the manner in which they were served under his guidance as Steward of the lodge . After the usual loyal toasts to " H . M . the Queen and the Craft" were given , Bro . Hobbs , I . P . M ., proposed " The W . M . " in his

usual characteristic and genial manner , and said he was sure that he could not add anything to grace the manner in which the W . M . carried out his duties , for it was well known , in the "Old England" as elsewhere , that the VV . M- always had most faithfully discharged every office that he had been called upon to occupy . The W . M . thanked Bro . Hobbs for the kind remarks

he had made in reference to him on that as on many other occasions , and was afraid that he received more kindness than he deserved . He thanked them all for the cordial way in which the toast was given , and he should endeavour to discharge the duties of the chair with honour to himself

and to the lodge , and hoped nothing whatever would be done by him that would not merit their approval . The next toast was "The Initiate , " when the Worshipful Master remarked that to his knowledge . many lodges were not so fortunate as the Old England in the number of initiates which they had experienced in the last few

years . Bro . Dyball returned thanks . " The Visitors " was then proposed by the Worshipful Master , who gave them a hearty welcome to the lodge , and thanked them for the various parts which they had undertaken to render the evening a most pleasant one . Bro . Parker thanked the W . M . and brethren for the unmistaken welcome which he and the other visitors had

received from the lodge . He was pleased with the work which the various officers of the lodge had carried out , and considered they were an ornament to Freemasonry . Bro . Vickers felt himself highly flattered with the welcome that he that evening had received , and fully endorsed the expressions of Bro . Parker as to the excellent way in which the officers had discharged the business of the lodge .

After other visitors had spoken , the toast of 1 he Past Masters" was proposed by the Worshipful Master , who said , in proposing that toast , it reminded him particularly of one of the Past Masters who had conducted the affairs of that lodge so highly satisfactorily as to secure its success and placed it on a solid , thriving foundation—he referred to their worthy Bro . Foulsham , the father , of the lodge .

He had worked hard and worked well , and always received distinguished honour from the members of the lodge . Each of the P . M . ' s had been attentive and strictly fulfilled their engagements , which he considered had done much for its success . Bro . Ranson , another P . M ., did well , and was always ready to give his assistance , and Bro . Hobbs , I . P . M ., had also done much for that lodge as well as for other

lodges , and always received that esteem which was his due . The I . P . M . gratefully thanked the W . M . for his kind expressions ot him , and the brethren for the goodwill which had existed between them for the past five years , and he should always feel it a honour to discharge any duty that Old England might call upon him to fulfil . Bro . Ranson , P . M ., returned his sincere thanks for the toast .

Bro . Foulsham , the Treasurer , in acknowleaging the toast , said that he was pleased with the excellent remarks which had been made by the W . M . on behalf of Bro . Bro . Hobbs , I . P . M ., who was worthy of them . He had himself spent a lifetime in Freemasonry , and began to feel that it was necessary that he should make way for some other brother as Treasurer to Old England . Freemasonry

he had always loved , and always should , for it was a wide subject . The previous day he strolled inside St . Paul ' s Cathedral , and thoughts arose in his mind , whilst taking a view of that grand building , that Sir Christopher Wren ( who was the greatest Freemason that ever lived ) must have devoted his whole skill and abilities in rearing a building that should endure to eternity . As a P . M . of

Old England , he had done all he could for it , and also for Freemasonry in various parts of England . He had not long resided in Thornton Heath when he discovered no lodge existed there , and he went there to avoid being occupied with Freemasonry ; but he soon found his intentions were reversed , and he was engaged in establishing the Old England . What he had done he felt proud of , and

hoped the little left of his strength would be devoted for the good of Masonry . TheW . M ., in proposing the toast , of "The Treasurer and the Secretary , " observed that he felt he had two good officers in the Treasurer and Secretary . The Treasurer was careful that they did not expend their funds uselessly , and was always watchful that they had a balance in hand .

The Secretary , he knew , energetically endeavoured to get in the subscriptions , and therefore it was highly gratifying to know that the one obtained all he could towards increasing the funds , whilst the other sacredly retained it . The Treasurer said he had tried his best to take care of the lodge ' s money for the past 10 years . He had possession of the key—that was well , but what was the use of the key if

nothing was to be locked up ? but he was glad to say that he always possessed something which brought the key into requisition . Bro . Horsnail , the Secretary , thanked the W . M ., officers , and brethren for the hearty reception of the toast , and promised to give that attention to the duties of his office in the future as he had done in the past , and hoped to

ensure their continued good feeling towards him . The Worshipiul Master , in proposing "The Officers , " took occasion to acknowledge the thanks which he felt were justl y due to his able officers . Bro . Kelvington , S . W ., said it afforded him much satisfaction to know that the work done by himself and by the officers had met the W . M . 's approbation , and he assured

them that he should continue the same interest in the tfture , for his love of Freemasonry was in no way abated , and in looking forward to occupy the proud position of their respected VV . Several songs were admirably rendered in the course of the evening , notably "The Mill-wheel , " by Bro . C . Balfourand " Non piu andrai , " by Bro . Vickers . The

, music was accompanied by Bro . F . Cambridge , P . P . G . O ., whose presence is always appreciated by the Old England brethren . The musical arrangements and selections were under the superintendence of Bro . Kelvington , who , on this as on previous occasions , gave great satisfaction to the brethren , and showed both taste and considerable

attention . The brethren then separated , after spending a most enjoyable evening in perfect Masonic fellowship and goodwill . Greenwood as Secretary during the past few years .

The new furniture and regalia , imported to replace that which was unfortunately burned in the Masonic Hall fire about a year ago , were used in the lodge for the first time , and were very much admired . This and the jewel for Bro . Greenwood were manufactured by Bro . Kenning , London , who deserves great

credit for the excellent manner in which he has executed the order entrusted to him . After the lodge was closed refreshments were provided for the brethren and visitors , of whom a large number were present , and the usual loyal and Masonic toasts were duly . honoured . — Weekly Argus , New Zealand .
