honourable man , aware of the step he is taking are instinctive , that they epted thern in a manner which could not but distress a good and sincere Mason . Noisy merriment and silly aimless laughter , brethren , are not a fitting reception to give to the secrets of our venerable Order . I will not dwell longer on the subject , but Masonry means to me the embodiment of all manliness , honesty , purity , and loyalty ; and I cannot bear
to think of its degradation , even momentarily , through the behaviour flf such as have not yet learned to love it . There is another noint to which I wish to call your special attention . It seems that some Masons in the province do not appreciate that most useful of little volumes , the Almanac , and that they would rather it were not published at all . I can only say that the small book is my constant companion ,

It has become as necessary to me as a crutch to a lame man , and I should very much regret its annihilation . I need no longer tax your attention and patience . The outlook of Sussex Masonry is very bright and insp iriting , and I trust the future may not belie our hopes and expectations ,
and that no year may close less prosperously than this . What the future holds for us individually we cannot tell , whether oi joy or sorrow , but , bound together as we are by the union of hearts and hands , we cannot but hope and believe that a wider field of usefulness and a still greater prosperity await us a body Masonic . Therefore , brethren , I wish you heartily and hopefully " A happy new Masonic year . "

PROVINCIAL GRAND LODGE OF WEST YORKSHIRE .
CELEBRATION OF THE CENTENARY OF THE ROYAL YORKSHIRE LODGE . Wednesday , the 10 th inst ., was a memorable day in the annals of Freemasonry at Keighley . Then it was that the Royal Yorkshire Lodge celebrated its centenary , the Prov . Grand Lodge of West Yorkshire adding honour and giving significance to the occasion by holding its half-yearly meeting at the Keighley Technical Institute , under the banner of the lodge
, and the members of the Royal Yorkshire Lodge assembled at two o ' clock , the lodge being opened by the Worshipful Master and his officers . At 2 . 15 Bro . T . W . Tew , Esq ., J . P ., Prov . Grand Master and Past Grand Deacon of England , and the members of the Prov . Grand Lodge entered . Bro , TEW then delivered the following
address—Officers and Brethren of the Provincial Grand Lodge , —Our autumnal assembly is generally considered to be the more agreeable of the two Provincial Grand Lodge meetings ot the year , lt is said to be so , perhaps , because the Provincial Grand Master is relieved from the difficult task of selecting officers into the Provincial Grand Lodge . In a province so rapidly increasing in its roll of lodges , and making the duty of stlection of officers a more responsible burden every year , it is a pleasure to visit a town like Keighley , where , at our second gathering in the year , this obligation is not imposed
upon the occupant of this chair . vVe greet you this afternoon with cheerful countenances and gladdened hearts , giving all a cordial welcome . At the April meeting , when collars were distributed , and this duty was gone through under the auspices of the Mayor of Wakefield and the three lodges of that city , there was one of the most crowded meetings this province has held since the 24 th April , 1 SS 5 , at Leeds , showing , we hope it may be taken , a growing interest on the part of the brethren in the transactions of this Provincial Grand Lodge . Although Keighley is on the geographical outskirts of this
province , and somewhat removed from as ready access from all parts of the riding as perhaps Wakefield , yet our friends of the " Royal Yorkshire " Lodge have thought the Keighley Institute the only fitting place of sufficient capacity in which the 73 lodges could adequately meet this afternoon . Bro . Edwin Lee and his lodge have done everything in their power ( to use their own words ) " to receive this Prov . Grand Lodge handsomely , and to make this re-union of Freemasons a great success . " I , and my Deputy , and officers , are always anxious , in co-operation with the lodge or lodges who receive us
and make elaborate preparations for our comfort and convenience , to aid their efforts , and to make these Masonic meetings as interesting and worthy of your presence , brethren , as possible . We thank this lodge for its invitation and the programme of usefulness it has laid out for our participation , and for the charitable object the town of Keighley wishes us to advance . Very briefly , "Royal Yorkshire" Lodge , No . 265 , has a warrant dated 23 rd August , 178 S . This lodge was then under the " Moderns , " but changed its name the year it was opened at Halifax to " Royal Yorkshire , " and was in known the roll of Grand
1789 as No . 552 on Lodge . At the alteration of numbers in 1792 it became 461 . in 1 S 13 it became 517 , and in 1 S 32 No . 342 . It was removed to Huddersfield 20 th March , 18 37 , and on the 18 th January , 1863 , it took at Keighley the number which it now holds , viz ., 265 , and the name " Royal Yorkshire . " The first entry in our W . Y . registry is in 1822 , when " Royal Yorkshire" paid quarterage fees for 24 members—it this day numbers 70 subscribing members , and has had an average of 62 members during the past 15 years . It enjoys , moreover , 15 Past Masters on its roll . The present W . M ., Bro . Edwin Lee , was initiated in Lodge No . 408 , " Three
Uraces , Haworth , April 15 th , 1678 . He filled theMaster ' schair of that lodge in 1881 , and Prov . Grand Standard tiearer in 18 S 7 . In October of the following year ( 1882 ) he joined " Royal Yorkshire " Lodge . He has acted as Charity Steward tor 265 , and he is a Life-Governor of each of our Masonic Charities , and has acted as Steward for the three festivals at different times . No . 265 has contributed £ 42 to the Annuitants , £ 97 IOS . to the Boys , and £ 73 to the Royal Masonic Institution tor Girls , besides contributing an annual subscription of 5 s . per member to the R . Grand Total ... £ 102 4 6 " Royal Yorkshire " has twice before received this Prov . Grand Lodge at Keighley , viz ., on October 11 , 1848 , and on the 4 th July , 1855 . These events in the history of this lodge show it to be a vigorous one , and , according to Bro . Kamsden Riley , sumeot the best workers of Masonic ritual have from time to time emanated from it . Tne effect ot this is , as we testify this day , the members cultivate brotherly love and take pride in their symbolical and speculative working . One of our most accomplished Masonic workers of
his day throughout West Yorkshire was one Thomas Brown , P . M ., a member of this lodge , and who joined the Airedale Lodge in 1857 . We congratulate this lodge on such a history , and on its stability and prosperity , and Prov . Grand Lodge is glad to visit it to-day , and to present the centenary warrant and jewels to the brethren of Royal Yorkshire Lodge . The Rector of Keighley , the Rev . F . D . Cremer , M . A ., at the request of this lodge , has invited the Freemasons to his church ; dedicated to St . Peter , is claimed on the part of St . Andrew , though the annual feast of the town , from time
immemorial , is kept on St . Peter ' s Day . In 1805 the church was rebuilt , and again in 1846 , the stone of the latter restoration being laid with Masonic ceremonial on 24 th February , 1846 . The church was dedicated by the Lord Bishop of Ripon , nth August , 1848 , and Prov . Grand Lodge was here in the October following . We are asked to listen to a sermon to be preached by Bro . the Rev . John Room , M . A ., and P . Prov . Grand Chaplain , for the benefit of the Keighley Cottage Hospital . I hope there are many of us present this afternoon who recollect the rev . brother ' s splendid the Patriarch
sermon on job , delivered in St . Giles ' s Church , Pontefract , on the 28 th January , 1880 , when Sir Henry and Lady Edwards were present . There is a treat in store for us . This hospital was founded 10 th March , 1874 . Its object is "to give to persons engaged in the industrial occupations or callings of life , who , when overtaken by accident , and destitute of means , to provide them with surgical treatment , " to cure them and return them rejoicing to their occupation . Our contributions will be asked in support of this valuable and most useful institution . Knowledge being one of the seven
