PRESENTATION TO BRO . W . J . HUGHAN . P . G . D .

At a meeting of the Chine Lodge , No . 1 SS 4 , at the Masonic Hall , Shanklin , on October 2 Sth , the following were present : Bros . Alfred Greenham , W . M . ; John Bailey , I . P . The minutes of the last regular lodge and two lodges of emergency having been read and confirmed , Bros . Young and Matthews were passed to the Second Degree by the W . M . After many communications being read , the W . M . rose and presented from Bro . Dr . Spark his " Freemasons ' Liber Musicus . " The W . M . said : 1 had the honour and pleasure of an introduction to Bro . Dr . Spark during his visits to the Island , and he very kindly presented his work

to the lodge . I am quite sure , brethren , when you see it and examine it for yourselves , you will see it opens a part of Masonry , which our lodge , at present , is not strong enough to carry out , but which I hope it will some day . Music is a grand aid to the Masonic ceremonies . How much 1 should like to visit a lodge where it is given . I have had it described to me , and I am sure the ceremonies carried out in some lodges must be very beautiful and

impressive . Perhaps some day we may be able to use this work , which contains all the musical Masonry known , and for it I propose the best thanks of the lodge be conveyed to Bro . Spark for his kind gift . The resolution was seconded by Bro . F . Cooper , P . M ., and carried unanimously . The WORSHIPFUL MASTER said : The next business , brethren , is to present Bro . VV . I . Hughan with a silver

Masonic Exhibition Medal , as a token of our appreciation for his services rendered to Chine Lodge Exhibition , or , as it will be generally called , Shanklin Exhibition . No one knows as fully as I do the vast amount of time Bro . Hughan devoted to make the exhibition a success , and to render the catalogue worthy a place in the history of Freemasonry . When I consider the number of letters Bro . Hughan wrote and oerused , in addition to every proof of

the catalogue , I confess I am astonished at the exceptional kindness 1 received at his hands , and , recollect , to one whom I have never seen . No other ties beyond the fraternal ones existed , and yet until the last he assisted me . The editing of the catalogue fell entirely on me , and , threfore , 1 know what immense assistance 1 received . It was indeed a far larger exhibition than I at first contemplated , and it grew far beyond my early ideas , and then I became

aware with what importance it was regarded by the Masonic world . When Bro . Hughan lent the authority of his great name—a name universally known and respected , not only as an author , but because Bro . Hughan has ever been willing to help on Freemasonry in every place—it was a sure guarantee that our exhibition would mark an important period in Masonry . All of you , I feel sure , read his interesting article in the Freemason of September iSth , which

conveyed , in no uncertain tone , his high opinion of the exhibition on a whole , but while we are proud of the success , 1 shall always remember his kind and generous help . I trespassed on his time to an extent that only those who have some insight into the compilation of a catalogue can estimate to its full extent . It was our intention to have asked our Prov . Grand Master , Bro . VV . VV . B . Beach , M . P ., to present him with this medal at the Exhibition Banquet , for at one time Bro . Hughan thought it possible

for him to be present . That would have been the highest honour we could have conferred in asking our Prov . Grand Master to present it . The opportunity was not given us , but I feel assured , coming from us as a lodge , it will Le appreciated , not for its intrinsic value , but for the feelings of gratitude that inspired it ; and , brethren , before I formally propose that it be sent to Bro . Hughan . I feel it is due to you to know a little concerning the exhibition funds .

I he statement of accounts was then read . The WORSHIPFUL MASTER , in continuing , said : I shall be unable , 1 regret to say , to benefit our Building Fund very much , and though , from a financial point of view , it may not be a great success , I foresaw , before the exhibition was opened , that even that wis subordinate 10 the higher issue ot Masonic success . The Province of Hampshire became identified with it , when our Prov . Grand Master honoured

us by consenting to open it , and I feel sure , from all that has been said , from the congratulations that 1 have received from some of the highest Masons in England—even from the Dist . G . Master of Gibraltar , and from foreign Masons holding the highest positions—that our province is proud of the undertaking , for in a letter received by me from our Deputy P . G . M ., Bro . J . E . Le Feuvre , G . D ., he conveyed in very warm terms his congratulations . Therefore ,

brethren , I am far more than satisfied with the result . We had the great disadvantage of the first two days being rough and rainy , and the closing one was equally as bad , or 1 am sure the result would have been different ; yet , alter all , the conviction is borne in upon me that there are many Masons who are entirely lost to the value of these exhibitions , and who do not appreciate the historical part of Freemasonry . I was reading an article recently in the

l'reemason complaining of the little support given by Masons to the Masonic journals , and how little Masons seemed to value the splendid heritage of Freemasonry , and , brethren , I feel the truth of the remarks , for one would have imagined after the immense labour to get an exhibition which comprised the most valuable Masonic articles known , every Mason in the Island would have attended There is , however , a tendency in some lodges to promote

the study of Freemasonry , which I trust in the very near future this lodge will help and encourage in every way . Bro . Hughan has generously sent many and valuable works to form the nucleus ol our lodge library , and Bro . George Taylor expressed his willingness to me before he left Shanklin , and hoped he might be able to help us . We are , I am sure , very much indebted in every way to Bro . Hughan , and it is with considerable pleasure that I propose

this medal be sent to him , expressing at the same time our gratitude for the help given to the exhibition—a medal , brethren , which he himself has described on seeing an early impression " one of the best in England , " and , as 1 might add , an opinion which the leading medallists have endorsed , and expressed their admiration of the beauty of the design , and the splendid manner in which Bro . Kenning has executed it .

Bro . J BAILEY , I . P . M ., seconded the resolution , and said next to the W . M . he was sure he was able to bear witness to the immense help received from Bro . Hughan , whose advice had materially helped to make the exhibition a success . Bro . Hughan did not spare himself in the least , but right through to the end appended his notes to the catalogue , which makes it at the present time the best authority on the various Masonic articles which are so

fully described in it . It is a work which cannot fail to add lustre to Chine Lodge , and immortalize its name . Previous to the lodge being closed , the WORSHIPFUL MASTER said he had the pleasure to announce that all the exhibits had been safely returned , which relieved the lodge as guarantors of any future responsibility . ( Cheers . ) The resolution was carried unanimously . The lodge was then closed , and the brethren adjourned to the banqueting room .

The New Deputy Prov. Grand Master For Surrey.

THE NEW DEPUTY PROV . GRAND MASTER FOR SURREY .

Bro . Frederick West , F . R . G . S ., whose appointment to the office of Deputy Prov . Grand Master for Surrey we referred to last week , was initiated in the Granite Lodge , No . 132 S , in 1 S 71 . He served the different offices up to , and including that of W . M ., and for his services in the

latter capacity the lodge voted him , not only the ordinary Past Master ' s jewel , but a special one as an extra mark of esteem . Since then Bro . West has acted as Treasurer of that lodge . After his Mastership of the Granite Lodge , he joined the Royal Somerset House and Inverness Lodge , No . 4 , and has been for some years Secretary of that lodge . In the year 1 SS 5 his lodge elected him W . M ., and

he represented it as Grand Steward the same year . Of this body he was elected Treasurer to the Board . Bro . West has also served on the Board of General Purposes . He is also a joining member of East Surrey Lodge of Concord , No . 463 , and Past Prov . Grand ! Registrar for his province . In Royal Arch , Bro . West was exalted in the Union of Waterloo Chapter , No . 13 , but did not take office in it .

He was one of the founders of the Granite Chapter , and its first H . He twice filled the office of M . E . Z . in that chapter . Bro . West is joining member of the EastSurrey Chapter of Concord , and has served as M . E . Z . of that chapter . He is a Past Prov . Grand Registrar , and Past Prov . G . N . of the Province of Surrey . Bro . West is now E . P . of the KemeysTynte Preceptory , is a Knight of Malta , and a member of the Rose Croix Orpheus Chapter . oia

Grand Chapter , which he has fixed to take place at the Masonic Hall , Cheltenham , on Wednesday , 24 th inst . A concert in aid of the Devon Masonic

tiducational Fund will be given in Plymouth Guildhall on Wednesday next , the 24 th inst . The brethren of the different lodges in Plymouth , Devonport , and Stonehouse are working cordially in order to secure a great success , and , as the musical talent among them is strong , both in numbers and ability , there is little doubt about their attaining their wishes .

The first meeting of the newly-established Mount Sion Chapter of Improvement , No " . 22 , was held at the Royal Edward , South Hackney , on Friday , the 12 th inst ., and proved very successful . 2 nd inst ., of Bro . William Aynsley , I . P . M . Mozart Lodge , No . 1929 , at the early age of 44 years . Bro . Aynsley was one of the founders and its fifth W . M ., and his kindness and geniality , as well as the great interest he took in the welfare of the lodge , will ever remain as examples to be followed by those who were fortunate enough to have known him , and to have enjoyed his friendship . Medallist of the Royal Academy , to commemorate the occasion , on this recurrence of an honour he has done so much to deserve . On Saturday last Bro . R . Paget , of the United Strength and Clerkenwell Lodges , completed his thirtieth year as vestry clerk of Clerkenwell , and to commemorate the occasion an influential committee of inhabitants decided to purchase the portrait of him , exhibited in the Royal

Academy last year , and present it to the vestry as representing the parishioners . The portrait , which is the work of one of the vestry clerk ' s artist sons , Mr . Sydney Paget , is a life-like one , and , hung in the Vestry Hall , will serve as a lasting monument of Bro . Paget ' s long and eminent services to Clerkenwell . The late Bro . Henry Bunt , whose death occurr ed in consequence of the terrible injuries he received at the

recent greal fire in Liverpool , and whose funeral in Lhiist Church Churchyard , Sandown , Isle of Wight , on the 12 th inst ., was very numerously attended by relatives , friends , and brother Masons , was a young member of the Sandown Lodge , No . 1 S 69 , of which his brother , Bro . J . Bunt , is a P . M . and Treas ., and one of its most respected members . Every one must feel sympathy for the family and friends ot the deceased , especially under the appalling circumstances of his death .
