To the Editor of the "Freemason . " Dear Sir and Brother , Will you kindly inform me in your next issue how often a brother who is not a subscribing member to a regular Craft lodge is entitled to visit a Craft lodje of instruction , he being a subscribing member to a Royal Arch

chapter ? Does this not come under the provisions laid down in Art . 152 of the Book of Constitutions ? By so doing you will oblige , yours fraternally , I . G . 1326 . [ We should say that admission to a Craft lodge of instruction must be governed by the rules regulating admission to a Craft lodge ; Membership of a Royal Arch Chapter does not affect the question . 6 91 J A TREASURE . " Bro . Bookworm , " who has lately been calling our attention to some choice lots in Claudin ' s list of curious books , seems to have overlooked the choicest of all . I allude to the original MSS . of C . A . Thory ' s two great works , the Annalis Oritrinis and the Acta Latomorum . These are

in Thory's own writing , every page marked with the initials of the printer and the censor of _ the press , substantially bound in calf , and containing , besides the contract with the printer , many lodge lists and an introduction which were suppressed in the printed works . I was desirous of inducing our Grand Lodge , or perhaps the librarian at

Goldensquare to acquire these , but foresaw that whilst urging the purchase the books would be secured either for America or Canada , both countries having addressed enquiries to Mons . Claudin . Luckily , an English brother , possessed of greater financial resources than myself came to my rescue , and through his help I have been enabled to secure the MSS .

for England . I believe the brother in question may possibly part with them at some future time , but he has assured me it shall not be to anyone outside our own country , and by preference to some Institution where they will be available to the Craft . My thanks ate due to this brother , but as I have not communicated with him on the subject , I hardly know whether I am at liberty to mention his name . G . W . SPETH .

C 92 J _ OLD WARRANTS . Anxious to answer Bro . ITughan ' s enquiry in the Freemason of the Cth inst ., I have carefully examined the warrant of the Anchor and Hope Lodge , No . 37 , but , as 1 expected , found the seal so much broken and dilapidated that , even by the aid of a powerful magnifying glass , I was unable to decipher the motto , or , in fact , to make out any portion of the seal . In past years the warrant evidently

suffered from lack of care ; indeed , I find no record of its having been framed until 1 S 40 . Judging by the dates of the warrants quoted by Bro . Hughan , I should suppose the same seal would be used for all . JAMES NEWTON .

693 ] A FIVE-POINTED STAR . Bro . Edgar Neale , the valued Secretary of the lodge at Chippenham , has shown me a silver jewel , which , for some seventy years , has been in the possession of his family . The following is a rough description of it : —On a solid star of five points , irradiated , within a circle ornamented , are three hollow crossed triangles forming five points , on

the centre whereof is the letter G . enclosing an eye . Does it belong to the order of a Temple ? I do not remember to have seen a similar one at the Shanklin Exhibition . A descriptive catalogue of ancient Masonic jewels , to form a sort of record of their varieties , with notes of any interesting circumstances affecting them , would be very useful . M ., both ceremonies being rendered by the W . M . in a most able and impressive

manner . Bro . J . Salmon , S . W ., was then presented as W . M . elect , and was duly and most ably installed as W . M . for the ensuing year , amidst the highest commendations from all present , by Bro . H . Forss , P . M ., who acted as Installing Master . Bro . Stephens , P . M . 1623 , acted as D . C . Bro . Salmon , W . M ., then appointed and invested the following officers : Bros . A . Hamilton , S . W .: Egbert Roberts ,

M . having received the " Hearty good wishes " of the visitors , lodge was closed , and the brethren adjourned to the large hall , where an excellent banquet was

served , under the superintendence of Bro . Kite , whose kind attention was much appreciated . After the usual loyal and Masonic toasts had been duly honoured , the W . M . alluded to the Queen in most gracious and generous terms and her coming jubilee . When each toast had been heartily drunk , they were ably responded to . The proceedings were enlivened by music and harmony , to which Miss Sargent , H . Forss , jun ., Bros . Roberts ,

mmj & i Tichiaz , Hall , and other brethren contributed . Bro . W . T . Yates , I . P . M ., had the honour of having a most beautiful jewel pinned to his breast , and testimonial , executed on vellum , by Bro . T . Salmon , W . M ., who , at the same time , eulogised Bro . Yates on the courteous , able , and meritorious manner in which he had conducted the business of the lodge during his year of office . A very successful evening was brought to a close with the Tyler ' s toast .

CAPPER LODGE ( No . 1076 ) . —The installation meeting of the above flourishing lodge took place on Thursday , the nth inst ., at the Guildhall Tavern , Gresham street , and was hououred by the presence of Bio . D . P . Cama , W . M . 2105 , Grand Treasurer of England . There was also a large muster of the brethren of the lodge , and visitors from far and near , who were amply repaid for their

attendance by the excellent work done and the splendid hospitality shown . The lodge was opened by Bro . W . H . Harris , W . M ., and the minutes of the previous meeting having been confirmed , the ballot was taken for Mr . Lionel B . Lewis , which proved unanimous . Bro . J . Wright , of No . 7 S , was then unanimously elected a joining member . Bro . W . Watkins , S . W ., W . M . elect , was then presented | to the Installing

Master , Bro . Harris , to receive at his hands the benefit of installation , and that worthy and distinguished brother was placed in the chair of K . S ., according to ancient custom , and saluted in due form . The W . M . then invested his officers as follows : Bros . C . D . Mears , S . W . ; VV . Temple , J . W . ; J . Dorton , P . M ., Treasurer ; ] . C . Pitt , Secretary ; I . Still , S . D . ; A . Dale , J . D . ; J . Tytheridge , I . G . ; L .

M . then inaugurated his reign by initiating the candidate , who , being an old friend , he , Bro . Watkins , was desirous of personally initiating into the mysteries and privileges of the Craft , and right well did he and his officers work the Degree . At its conclusion Bro . Harris gave the

three addresses , and concluded the installation ceremony . It was from first to last a masterly exhibition of perfect Masonic ritual , and was the theme of approbation and congratulation among all present . The Worshipful Master then announced that thev were

honoured by the presence of an officer of Grand Lodge—Bro . Cama , the Grand Treasurer—and called upon them tn salute that distinguished brother with Grand honours , which ( under the direction of Bro . H . Tapley , P . M ., who had admirably performed the duty of D . of C . during the ceremony of installation ) were given with hearty enthusiasm .

Bro . Cama briefly returned thanks . The W . M . pinned a handsome and valuable Past Master ' s jewel on the breast of Bro . Harris , and , in the name of the lodge , wished him many years of health and happiness to wear it . It was also proposed and carried that the thanks of the lodge should be incribed on a vellum , mounted and framed , and presented to Bro . Harris , to mark the estimation of the

lodge for the admirable manner in which he had that day installed his successor , a copy of the same to be inscribed on the minutes of the lodge . Bro . Harris having feelingly returned thanks for these several honours , the lodge was closed in due form , the brethren afterwards adjourning to the banquet , which was admirably served .

G . M ., the Earl of Carnarvon , " having been duly honoured , The Worshipful Master gave that of "The Deputy G . M ., Lord Lathom ; and the rest of the Grand Officers , Present and Past . " He said they were honoured that day by the presence of a Grand Officer whose name , not only as a Mason , but as one who gave liberally in the cause of

Charity , was a household word in the Craft . H s gifts to the several Charities of the Order were enormous , and on behalf of the Capper Lodge , he thanked him for his attendance , and . felt sure that when the brethren rose to respond to the toast with which Bro . Cama ' s name would be coupled , they would show by the manner in which they received it tbat they honoured their esteemed guest as one worthy of

honour , both as a man and a Mason . Bro . Cama , who was accorded an enthusiastic reception , said he was proud to be an English Mason as well as an Indian one ; and as they were proud of and honoured their Queen , so he honoured and was proud of her as the Empress of his native land . The high honour that had been conferred upon him by the Masons of England in electing

him Grand Treasurer was one that he held in high estimation . It was a proud position , and the highest a Mason could aspire to , especially as it was conferred by the suf-Iragesof the members of the Grand Lodge , and as such he looked upon it , and as such he prized it . With reference to the remarks of their esteemed W . M ., he ( Bro . Cama ) was afraid that worthy brother had overrated his Charity ; but , whatever he had done , it was not him they

had to thank , but his and their Creator ; to Him all praUe was due . He cordially thanked the W . M . for his kind remarks , and the brethren for their hearty reception of them j and resumed his seat amid rounds of applau « e . Bro . Harris then proposed the toast of "The W . M ., " and in so doing said he felt sure they would have in B * o . Watkins a Ma-ter second to none , and lint he would he a credit to the Capper Lodge . He asked them to give him a jolly good fire , and they did , until the very roof rang

again . Bro . Watkins , in response , thought , and in fact , was very much afraid that he should not be able to excel , nor even come up to , the high standard set by his predecessors . He had been a member of that lodge for a goodly number of years , and would promise them that it should tic Ins earnest endeavour to maintain its lustre , and be worthy of the confidence reposed in him , so that at the end of his

year of office they would nut have to regret the honour they had conferred upon him that day . Bro . Harris responded for " The Past Masters , " and said that eight years ago he and Bro . Watkins were appointed Wine Stewards , and had , hand in hand as it were , worked together in and for the welfare of the lod ^ e . That feeling was universal in it , and he trusted it would long

continue . In the name of the Past Masters he thanked them lor their hearty reception of the toast . " The Initiate " having been complimented , the toast of " The Visitors" followed , and Bros . Gilbert , Bolton , Macgregor , and others , severally returned thanks . Bros . Stephens and lUder responded for " The Masonic Press , " the former regreting the absence of Bro . Jolly

through an accident ; and the latter , who attended for Bro . Jolly , assured the brethren that he should endeavour to do his duty for that brother and to their satisfaction . The Tyler ' s toast concluded the proceedings , which were marked by the utmost cordiality on all sides ; universal regret being expressed at the misfortune that had precluded the possibility of our old contributor ' s attendance .

ALDERSGATE LODGE ( No . 1657 ) . —The stated meeting of this lodge took place at the Albion Tavern , Aldersgate-slreet , on Monday , the 15 th inst . Bro . E . Y . Jolhffe , W .
