Provincial Meetings.

He would remind them that their next meeting would be on the ist of January , when many of them would , no doubt , be celebrating the festivities of the New Year , but he could tell them that he should be present the same as any other lodge night . For his own part , he wanted to make Masonry occupy a greater position amongst the worthy brethren of the district than it held even at the present time . He did

not know exactly how it was to be done , but he wanted them to know that it vvas to their interest to carry out their duties , that people might acknowledge that there is a character about Freemasonry that vvas one of its highest virtues . He wanted to set an example , and that vvas by closing the festivities regularly at 11 p . m . ; if there vvas plenty of work to do , begin earlier . He thanked them for the toast , and should endeavour to leave the lodge better ,

if possible , than when he undertook its Mastership . The other toasts vvere "The Visitors , " responded to by Bros . Bell and Mathews ; "The Past Masters , " by Bros . Mason and Lawson ; and "The Officers , " by Bro . Busbridge . Some splendid vocal and instrumental music by Bros . Clifton , Knell , Hammond , and the Pattison Stringed Orchestra contributed in no ordinary degree to the pleasures of the evening .

John vvas held on Monday , the Sth inst ., at the lodge rooms at the White Lion Hotel , when Bro . Joseph D . Kain , W . M . elect , vvas duly installed into the chair of K . S . in a very able manner by Bro . John Beresford , P . M .,

The ceremony of installation was rendered in the usual manner , with choral accompaniments , and vvas much appreciated by the numerous and distinguished assembly of brethren who attended the meeting . and efficiently worked lodge , and his zeal , backed by an able staff of officers , augurs well for the continued success during the ensuing year of this branch of the ancient and honourable Fraternity . Lane , and supported by Bro . J . Dodge , a cordial vote of thanks vvas presented to Bro . Rowland for his gift , to vvhich he suitably replied . Other lodge business was then disposed of , and the lodge closed .

John was celebrated by the members of this lodge at the Masonic HaU on Wednesday , the 3 rd inst ., when a large company of brethren assembled to witness the installation of Bro . W . a very successful one in the history of the lodge , and a similar compliment vvas accorded to the Installing Master , with whose efforts the history of Clausentum is so closely identified . These expressions of thanks having been acknowledged , Bro . A . J . Brown vvas appointed a Steward to represent the lodge at the festival of the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Masonic Educational and Benevolent

Association , vvhich vvas to be held at Southampton , and a sum vvas voted to his list from the lodge funds . An interesting feature of the meeting was the presentation to the lodge by Bro . Methven , on behalf of Mrs . Evans , of an excellent portrait , suitably framed and inscribed , of her husband , the late Captain R . W . Evans , a founder of the lodge and one of its Past Masters . Bro . Methven with some

feeling referred to the fact that their late respected Bro . Evans vvas the first who had been removed by death from the list of Clausentum Past Masters . The portrait , vvhich was enlarged from a photograph by Bro . S . Line , and is an excellent " counterfeit presentment" of Captain Evans as he vvas known about 10 years ago , was accepted with pleasure by the brethren , and the thanks of the lodge were ordered to be forwarded to Mrs . Evans .

The installation banquet vvas served in excellent style by Bro . Henley . The newly-installed W . M . presided , and the usual round of Masonic toasts was gone through , " Hearty good wishes" being on all hands expressed towards Bro . Fowler that his year of office would be a happy and successful one .

Sunday last , being the anniversary of the death , in 1 S 61 , of the Prince Consort , and of that of the Princess Alice in 1 S 7 8 , the Queen , accompanied by the Prince and Princess of Wales , the Duke and Duchess of Connaught , the Princess Louise ( Marchioness of Lome ) , the Duchess of Albany , Prince Henry of Battenberg , the Duke of Clarence and Avondale , and the Princesses Victoria and Maud , attended the customary memorial service in the Royal Mausoleum at Frogmore .

Jerusalem Chapter ( No . 185 ) . —This old chapter met at Freemasons' Tavern , Great Oueen-street , on the 9 th inst . Among those present were Comps . R . Kimpton , M . E . Z . ; E . A . Harris , H . ; Hardy , J . ; G . Davis , P . Z ., S . E . ; Rivers , P . S . ; F . Smith , P . Z ., P . P . G . J . Cheshire ; Capt . T . C Walls , P . Z ., P . P . G . P . S . Middx . ; Ellborn , P . Z . ; Staley , P . Z . ; J . Harris , and others .

1 he minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed . The ballot was taken on behalf of Bro . J . J . Stedman , 1728 , and it proving to be unanimous he was impressively exalted to the Degree of R . A . Apologies for non-attendance vvere received from Comps . Harfeld , P . Z ; N . Moss , P . Z . ; Rest , P . Z . ; and others . The chapter vvas then closed , and the companions to the

adjourned banquet . Upon the removal of the cloth thecustomary toasts received tull justice . The M . E . Z ., in responding to the toast of his health , stated that he had endeavoured during his membership of the chapter to bring good brethren and true into its ranks . He hoped to introduce others ere long . Their old chapter had for years past been noted for the good working

of its Principals , and he trusted that he had not proved an exception . In replying to "The Health of the Past Principals , " Comp . b . Smith said that upon his returning to reside permanently in London after many years absence therefrom , he vvas surprised to nnd that he vvas the oldest member of

the chapter . Deaths and resignations had made sad havoc in their ranks during the last dozen years or so , but he was pleased to hear so good an account of the chapter , which vvas well officered and in a sound financial condition . Comp . G . Davis , P . Z ., acknowledged the toast of " The treasurer and S . E ., " and Comp . Rivers that of "The Officers . "

Ihe M . E . Z . had generously furnished an excellent programme of instrumental and vocal music , vvhich greatly enhanced the pleasure of the proceedings . Kennington Chapter ( No . 1381 ) . —This chapter met lor the dispatch of business at the Horns Tavern , Kennington Park , on the 4 th inst ., when there vvere present , among others , Comps . W . He regretted that there had been no work that evening , more especially as they were honoured with the presence of visitors .

In the course of the evening ' s proceedings congratulatory allusions vvere made by the numerous speakers to the fact of Comps . G . Everett ' s unopposed nomination as Grand treasurer . In the intervals of the speeches Comps . Buxton , Gardner , Lundie , and others entertained the companions .

He would remind them that their next meeting would be on the ist of January , when many of them would , no doubt , be celebrating the festivities of the New Year , but he could tell them that he should be present the same as any other lodge night . For his own part , he wanted to make Masonry occupy a greater position amongst the worthy brethren of the district than it held even at the present time . He did

not know exactly how it was to be done , but he wanted them to know that it vvas to their interest to carry out their duties , that people might acknowledge that there is a character about Freemasonry that vvas one of its highest virtues . He wanted to set an example , and that vvas by closing the festivities regularly at 11 p . m . ; if there vvas plenty of work to do , begin earlier . He thanked them for the toast , and should endeavour to leave the lodge better ,

These expressions of thanks having been acknowledged , Bro . A . J . Brown vvas appointed a Steward to represent the lodge at the festival of the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Masonic Educational and Benevolent

Association , vvhich vvas to be held at Southampton , and a sum vvas voted to his list from the lodge funds . An interesting feature of the meeting was the presentation to the lodge by Bro . Methven , on behalf of Mrs . Evans , of an excellent portrait , suitably framed and inscribed , of her husband , the late Captain R . W . Evans , a founder of the lodge and one of its Past Masters . Bro . Methven with some

feeling referred to the fact that their late respected Bro . Evans vvas the first who had been removed by death from the list of Clausentum Past Masters . The portrait , vvhich was enlarged from a photograph by Bro . S . Line , and is an excellent " counterfeit presentment" of Captain Evans as he vvas known about 10 years ago , was accepted with pleasure by the brethren , and the thanks of the lodge were ordered to be forwarded to Mrs . Evans .

The installation banquet vvas served in excellent style by Bro . Henley . The newly-installed W . M . presided , and the usual round of Masonic toasts was gone through , " Hearty good wishes" being on all hands expressed towards Bro . Fowler that his year of office would be a happy and successful one .

Sunday last , being the anniversary of the death , in 1 S 61 , of the Prince Consort , and of that of the Princess Alice in 1 S 7 8 , the Queen , accompanied by the Prince and Princess of Wales , the Duke and Duchess of Connaught , the Princess Louise ( Marchioness of Lome ) , the Duchess of Albany , Prince Henry of Battenberg , the Duke of Clarence and Avondale , and the Princesses Victoria and Maud , attended the customary memorial service in the Royal Mausoleum at Frogmore .

Z ., in responding to the toast of his health , stated that he had endeavoured during his membership of the chapter to bring good brethren and true into its ranks . He hoped to introduce others ere long . Their old chapter had for years past been noted for the good working

of its Principals , and he trusted that he had not proved an exception . In replying to "The Health of the Past Principals , " Comp . b . Smith said that upon his returning to reside permanently in London after many years absence therefrom , he vvas surprised to nnd that he vvas the oldest member of

the chapter . Deaths and resignations had made sad havoc in their ranks during the last dozen years or so , but he was pleased to hear so good an account of the chapter , which vvas well officered and in a sound financial condition .
