There being nothing further before the lodge , it was closed , and the brethren adjourned and dined , Bro . Rymer
catering in masterly style . The cloth having been cleared , the W . M . gave the usual loyal and Grand Lodge toasts . In giving that of the " D . G . M ., and the rest of the Grand Officers , Present and Past , " the VV . M . said that a month before they had been honoured with the presence of a distinguished Past Grand Officer in the person of Bro . Board ,
while on the present occasion they vvere honoured by the presence of a Present Grand Officer , in the person of Bro . Lemon , with whose name he should couple the toast . He did not know how many offices Bro . Lemon held , or hoiy many lodges he belonged to , but a greatmany he believed . However , they congratulated him upon his honours , and the lodge upon his presence as their guest , and he asked them
to do all honour to the toast . Bro . Lemon , in response , acknowledged the cordiality with vvhich the toast had been received . The officers of Grand Lodge vvere all doing good work for Masonry . Those who had attended Grand Lodge , and had seen their esteemed D . G . M ., the Earl of Lathom , doing the duties in Grand Lodge in the absence of the Grand Master , had
evidenced the masterly manner with vvhich he conducted the work , and carried out his responsible duties . He was exceedingly pleased to meet that night several very old friends—more especially his old and esteemed friend , Bro . Coupland , whom he had had the pleasure of knowing—well , he vvas almost afraid to say how many years , but certainly 20 or 30 years , when they vvere very young men indeed .
The work of Grand Lodge , if arduous , vvas pleasing work , and was well done . There vvas no need to say to either of them "Go and do it ; " no , it was done with pleasure , and therefore vvas not a toil ; they did not go about it with lugubriousness , but with a love for the work which made it light and pleasing , and an honour to the worker . Now he would say that it afforded him much gratification to come down to
that lodge , of which he had heard so much , and see the magnificent style with vvhich they met and carried out their ritual , to know that they were a fraternity—he might almost say a confraternity—of Masons , as it seemed to him , all bound together in ties of good fellowship and brotherly love , and all working together with that harmony that was an essential to success . He would say again that it afforded
him the greatest gratification , and vvas a circumstance of vvhich he , as a humble member of Grand Lodge and a brother Mason , vvas not only proud but pleased to witness . He must congratulate them on the admirable manner in which his colleague , their W . M ., had performed the ritual , and he particularly vvas impressed with the accuracy and perfect manner in which the Deacons did their work ,
because the Deacons' work was , perhaps , more criticised than the work of any officer in the lodge . From what he had seen of the officers , he felt sure that for many years there would be a succession of Worshipful Masters who would worthily sustain the reputation of the lodge , and worthily follow in the footsteps of those who had preceded them . He rejoiced to hear that they were contemplating a
reunion with all the brethren in the district , whereby they would be showing the outside world that Masonry was not a secret Society in the sense in which such societies vvere adjudged , but a Society that extended the right hand of fellowship to all within its circle , and gave of its fullness , and liberally , to help and assist the distressed and afflicted . He vvas pleased to be present to witness that they were not
only Masons in name , but in sincerity and truth . Bro . Cook , in responding for " Earl Amherst , P . G . M . ; Bro . Eastes , D . P . G . M . ; and the rest of the Prov . Grand Officers , Present and Past , " said his lordship must have the Pattison Lodge constantly before him , or he would not have selected one of its members for office , even that of Steward , especially when they considered the vast array of brethren ready and anxious to take even the most humble
position under his genial rule and government . He remembered with pleasure that when his lordship conferred the collar he said that he ( Bro . Cook ) might hope for some higher honour in the future for the Pattison Lodge . He looked upon it as evidence of the good feeling that existed on the part of their P . G . M . towards the lodge , and if he properly understood his lordship he might look forward to some further distinction , as had been the case with several of the Past Grand Officers who sat beside and around
him . The VVorshipful Master , in response to a very enthusiastic reception of the toast of his health , eloquently proposed by Bro . Cook , said he knew the toast was merely a formal one , but he had had to respond to it twice before , and had now lost all the nervousness that accompanied his first response .

catering in masterly style .
