' s 18 carat gold jewel was presented to Bro . John Garside by the W . M ., in the name
of the lodge , for his services during the past eventful year . Bro . Garside returned thanks for the jewel ( manufactured by Bro . George Kenning , 47 , Bridge-street , Manchester ) inappropriate terms , and , there being no further business , the lodge was closed . The Festival of St . W . M . was supported on the right by Bros . F . Binckes and Wm . Goodacre , and on his left by the I . P . M ., Bro . Garside ; the D . C , Bro . John Bladon ; and others . After the banquet , the W . M . proposed the preliminary loyal and Masonic toasts . In response to the toast of " The Right Hon . the Earl of Carnarvon , M . W . Pro G . M . ; the Right Hon . the Earl of
Lathom , R . W . D . G . M . ; and the rest of the Grand Officers , Present and Past , " Bro . Wm . Goodacre , P . G . Swd . Br ., in thanking the brethren for the cordial reception they had given the toast , congratulated the lodge upon the satisfactory balance-sheet taat had been produced , and said there could be no doubt about the members having the interests of Freemasonry and the Charities at heart , when such a
handsome sum as 160 guineas could be raised and presented to the Royal Masonic Benevolent Institution during the past year . It was highly creditable to the lodge to raise such a sum as that , and he trusted and believed that the claims of the Girls' School would not be lost sight of by the Affability
Lodge during the present year , and felt sure the Province of East Lancashire would do its utmost for that Reserving Institution . 'I here were a laige number of persons receiving suppoit from the three Masonic Charitable Institutions , and it behoved members of the Craft , both young and old , to do their best to maintain them .
Bro . Frederick Binckes also briefly replied to the toast ; but expressed his intention of saying more at a later period of the evening . In response to the toast of "The D . P . G . M ., Bro . Geo . Mellor , and the Present and Past Prov . Grand Officers , " Bro . Wm . Nicholl , P . M ., Prov . G . Treas ., and Bro . A . H . Jefferis , Prov . A . G . D . C , replied .
In proposing "The Health of the Worshipful Master , " Bro . W . Nicholl , P . M ., P . G . Treas ., referred to the time when he had the privilege of initiatinghim into Freemasonry , and how he had taken a good straight look at him to see if he was made of the right stuff for a VV . M . His inspection was satisfactory , as time proved , for having filled nearly all the minor offices in a thoroughly satisfactory manner , he
was now in the proud position of W . M . He felt certain the lodge would lose none of its prestige under Bro . Akerman ' s government , but that he would prove to the brethren who had so unanimously elected him his thorough fitness for the position . In conclusion , Bro . Nicholl asked the brethren to stand to their glasses and heartily drink the health of their new W . M ., wishing him a prosperous year of office ,
and many happy returns of that day , vvhich was the 12 th anniversary of his wedding . It is scarcely necessary to say the invitation was promptly and cordially responded to , after vvhich Bro . Stephen Jupp sang " Here's to his health in a song , " in grand style . The W . M ., after thank ng Bro . Nicholl for his kind remarks , and the brethren for so heartily responding to the
toait , said it was a great pleasure to him to feel he had a great many friends both in and out of ths lodge , who sincerel y wished him success in his new and honourable Position . From the time of his initiation he had felt an ambition to become W . M . of his lodge , and now that the brethren had elevated him to that position , he assured them he would endeavour to do all in his power to uphold the
dignity and integrity of the grand old Affability Lodge . Y > 6 present was to him , undoubtedly , the proudest moment of his life , and vvith the words of that beautiful song vvhich had just been so ably rendered by Bro . Jupp , he trusted he might have health and strength to perform his duties , and that he might have plenty of opportunities of proving his zeal for and interest in the lodge . With his own efforts , and the assistance of his officers and P . M . ' s , he felt no
doubts about enjoying a pleasant and successful year of office . "Th ° -Jta ™ Dawson , P . M ., in felicitous terms , proposed Ihe Visitors , " which was well received and drunk with enthusiasm , and then Bro . Seymour Jackson , late of the IT-LI r ? : ° Pera Company , sang "The Message , " in a - «? hl v finished manner . Bro . Arthur Middleton , P . M . 6 45 , in an admirable

speech responded , as did also Bro . John Stovold , l . P . M . 903 . The W . M ., in proposing "The Health of the I . P . M ., " Bro . John Garside , referred to the privilege he had enjoyed of presiding over the lodge during the Jubilee year , which had given a larger sum to the Royal Masonic Benevolent Institution than any other in the province , viz ., 160 guineas .
It was certainly something to be proud of , but , apart from this gratifying fact , Bro . Garside had laboured untiringly during his year of office to further the interests of his lodge , and had shown himself capable of performing any ceremony that was worked in the Craft . As Installing Master that day he had greatly enhanced his reputation as a worker of the ritual , and he ( Bro . Akerman ) trusted he
would continue to do in the future what he had so ably done in the past . Bro . Stephen Jupp here sang "Come into the garden , Maud . " The I . P . M ., after expressing his pleasure at the manner in which the toast of the l . P . M . and Installing Master had been proposed and received , said he had tried to do his
duty as VV . M ., and was glad to find his efforts had been appreciated by the brethren . He felt proud of presiding over a lodge that had subscribed such a sum last year to the R . M . B . Institution , and which possessed over 500 votes in the three Institutions . In conclnsion , Bro . Garside expressed his intention of doing his utmost to promote the prosperity of his lodge in the future .
After the toast of "The P . M . 's" of the lodge had been proposed and responded to , " The Masonic Charities " was given , and in response thereto Bro . Frederick Binckes made a most interesting and masterly speech , in the course of which he referred to the highly appreciated efforts made by the brethren of the Affability Lodge during the past year in contributing such an
amount as they had done to the Royal Masonic Benevolent Institution . Bro . Binckes advocatedjthe claims of the Royal Masonic Institution for Girls , and pointed out to the brethren the necessity for doing all in their power to support that Institution in view of the proposed increased advantages to be added to it , and likewise in honour of its centenary . Respecting the Royal Masonic
Institution for Boys , to vvhich he had the honour of being Secretary , Bro . Binckes did not consider it advisable to press the claims of that Institution too strongly upon the brethren at the present moment , bearing in mind the noble and generous response the Craft generally had made on behalf of the Royal Masonic Benevolent Institution so recently ; at the same time , any
donations the brethren felt they could spare towards the Boys' School would be thankfully received and faithfully appplied . In conclusion , Bro . Binckes expressed his thanks and satisfaction vvith the cordial reception extended him . Bro . Binckes' speech was listened to with rapt attention , and was greatly applauded . A P . M . of the lodge , at this point , informed the worthy
Secretary to the Boys' School that himself and a few other members of the lodge had decided to give 40 guineas ( jointly ) towards the Institution . This announcement was received with applause . The toast of "The Officers" was next given , and a long remembered enjoyable evening was brought to a close
vvith the Tyler's toast . The thanks of all present are due to Bros . Seymour Jackson , and S . Jupp for their kindness in being present and entertaining the company vvith their delightful singing . The same reward applies to Bro . C . E . Daber , who accompanied the singers most artistically , " and performed some choice morceaux on the piano .

From time to time clergymen of the Church of England have been initiated into the mysteries of Freemasonry within the walls of the Lodge of Hope , and several have attained the rank ot Prov . G . Chaplain , but we believe that
this is the first occasion on which a cleric has been elected to preside over the affairs of the lodge , and installed in the chair of K . S . The ceremony took place at the Temperance Hall , and was performed in a most impressive and efficient manner by Bro . Stephen Knight , P . M ., who was much complimented by the Grand Lodge Officers , and others present . One of the first duties of the newly installed
W . M . was a very pleasing one , namely , to present to the I . P . M ., Bro . Hamngton , a handsome gold Past Master ' s jewel , of beautiful design , and engraved vvith the following inscription : " Presented to Brother H . S . Hanington , P . Freemasons , and proposed the first toast , that of " The Queen an J the Craft , " ~ The VV . M . next gave "The Health of H . R . H . the Prince of VVales , the M . W . the Grand Master ; the M . W . the Pro Grand Master , the Earl of Carnarvon ; the R . W . the Deputy Grand Master , and the Grand Officers of the Grand Lodge of England , Present and Past . " The VV . M .
referred to the universality of Masonry , lodges existing in all parts of the world , and showed the manner in vvhich a great number of the lodges , widely scattered as they were , were yet united in the Giand Lodge , which he felt pleased to say was represented on this occasion by two distinguished Masons .

C . E . Daber , who accompanied the singers most artistically , " and performed some choice morceaux on the piano .

and Bucks ; with a considerable number of . local brethren , were present , on the 6 th inst ., at the installation of the Rev . Richard Williams , as W . M . of the above lodge .
The brethren ofthe Lodge of Hope regarded it as
