McElroy , permanently grace the walls of the lodge , and Bro . Berra expressed his gratitude to the donor for so kindly extending to him the compliment he had bestowed on his predecessors . The lodge was closed , and the guests arrived for the

banquet and Festival of St . John , at which over 90 ladies and brethren were present . The suite of rooms had , been superbly furnished and decorated for the occasion , and the walls artistically hung with a profusion of oil paintings , water colours , engravings , & c , generously provided , as in previous years , by Bro . A . W . Reynolds , S . W . At the banquet the customary loyal and Masonic Itoasts

were duly honoured , and appropriate" songs interspersed at suitable intervals were most pleasingly rendered by Bros . J . H . Greenwood , M . Thomas , W . H . Mortimer , W . H . Anderton , and others . In proposing "The Worshipful Master , " Bro . Berra briefly reviewed the seven years' history of the lodge , during which time it had been presided over by founders

and joining members . Now the first initiate had by the unanimous consent of his brethren been called upon to rule . He predicted a prosperous and happy year of office for Bro . Shann , and was exceptionally pleased that in the ceremony of installing the lodge's first born , Bro . Goodacre , who consecrated the lodge , and Bro . Hopewell , the first Master , had been able to take part .

The Worshipful Master , in reply , assured the brethren that he had accepted the highest honour they could confer upon him withconsiderabletrepidati jn . He trusted , however , with the assistance of his Past Masters and Officers , which , he WvS sure , would be most generously extended . to him , that the lodge would not suffer in his hands . He would strive to maintain true Masonic teaching in the lodge , and

promote prace , love , and harmony among thc brethren . Bro . Shann then , amid the applause of the assembled gutsts , presented a handsome Past Master's jewel , on which was engraved the following inscription : " Presented by the Brethren of Prince Edward Lodge , No . 2109 , to Bro . The lodge was opened , and the minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed . The ballot was then taken for Bro . A . M . Levy as a joining member , and Mr . G . A . Bradbury , which proved unanimous . Bro . Levy was then received into the lodge with a few suitable remarks from the W . M . Bro . Levy returned thanks . Bro . G . Bradbury was then initiated in a most impressive minner

by the W . M ., the J . W . explaining the charge , and the S . W . gave the charge . Bro . Cable was passed to the Second Degree , the J . W . explaining the working tools . Bro . A . " 'They all knew what a good Mason the Marquis of Zetland was , and how anxious he was to attend to his Misonic duties . Bro . Stead , P . brotherly feeling and goodfellowship which ought to exist amongst all good and true Freemasons . Bro . Waistell , P . M ., said that the Provincial Grand Ollicers al ! tried to do their duty , and he hoped there would always be found good and true Misons to work in the Provincial Grand Lodge . Bro . Robinson , P . M ., also appropriately replied . Bro . C . H . Backhouse , P . M ., P . P . J . G . W ., then gave

"The W . M . of the Anchor Lodge , anil Prosperity to the Lodge . " As he told them in the lodge , their newly-installed Worshipful Master was quite capable and willing to do his duties to the lodge , and he was certain that his year of office would be a successful one . He was a Mason who was capable of affording them capital amusement , for he couid sing them a splendid song , and would do his very best to make every member of the lodge enjoy their meetings ,

while he felt certain that during his year of office the brethren would not want trom proper instruction in Freemasonry . He had therefore great pleasure in submitting the toast . Although many distinguished Past Masters had preceded him , yet he was certain that none of them had ever done better than ) he was sure their newly-installed VV . M ., Bro . Dr . Charles Tweedy , would do , and therefore he wished him long life and prosperity .

After the toast had been honoured with a bumper , and the silver loving cup handed round , while _ , full musical honours were awarded , Bro . Dr . Tweedy , VV . M ., rose to reply , and was received with loud cheers . He said he hardly knew how to thank them for the enthusiastic way they had responded to the toast , which had been so ably given by their worthy Installing Master , Bro . Backhouse , P . M . With regard to the

future working of the lodge , he did not think that anyone could take a greater interest in the lodge than he did , and he was most anxious that it should be well worked during his term of office . He could assure the brethren that he would strive his best to perform the work of the lodge , and he hoped that he might have a good deal of work to do . He was fully aware of the difficulties he had undertaken , and was also cognisant of the fact that his predecessor had

been a most successful VV . M ., bu' he hoped , with the assistance of the Past Masters , to carry on the lodge most successfully . The Worshipful Master proposed " The Health of the Installing Master , Bro . C . H . Backhouse , P . M ., P . P . J . G . W . " It was a pleasure to propose the toast , as he felt that he could not say too much of Bro . Backhouse nor be too laudable in his commendation of the way in which the

installation ceremony had been perform ;! that afternoon . He had heard a good many installations in his time , but his opinion was that he never heard a service so fluently , enthusiastically , and impressively rendered than it had been done that day by their worthy Brother Backhouse . The toast having been given with full musical honours , Bro . C . II . Backhouse , P . M ., said it had given him the greatest pleasure to have the honour of installing their

Worshipful Master in the chair of K . S . He felt it an especial honour for two reasons , firstly becaus ; he knew that tbe Anchor Lodge had several Past Masters who were well up in Masonic work , and who would willingly and cheerfully render any assistance that might be asked of them , and , secondly , because he had personally known their Worshipful Mas ' er ever since he had come to reside in their neighbourhood . He hoped that whatever good

they found in their Worshipful Master they would carefully imitate , and would pass over any defects he ( Bro . Backhouse ) might have made in giving the installation service that day . Bro . VV . S . Charlton gave " The Visitors , " and said the brethren of thc lodge felt honoured in having such a large attendance of visitors that day . 'They would always be glad to welcome brethren from a distance to any of their lodge meetings .

Bros . Beatty , Tomkins , A . C . Wilson , C . G . Pook , Button , VV . W . Hall , Holt , W . Barron , Sewell , and F . L . Dodds replied . The Worshipful Master gave " The I . P . M ., Bro . J . Ward , and the Past Masters . " 'Their l . P . M . had done his work well , which was a point upon which they all agreed . He ( Bro . Dr . Tweedy ) felt certain if ever he required the assistance of the Past Masters , that such help would bs

willingly and cheerfully given . Bro . J . Ward , I . P . M ., replied , and he wished the VV . M . and the lodge increased prosperity . He felt certain that all the Past Masters would rally round their new VV . M . and assist him in doing the work of the lodge . They all knew that Bro . Dr . Tweedy had the interests of Freemasonry at heart , and so far as he ( Bro . Ward ) was concerned , he would do his best to assist him in having a pleasant and
