" Veritas."

Revelation of St . John , but they decline to take such an article at any price , and indeed reject it with indifference . "In 1848 , " he says , "I voyaged some 15 , 000 miles expressly to lay my discoveries before the Earl of Zetland , the then Grand Master of England ; but the Grand

Master and his Grand Secretary treated my introductions , my discoveries , and myself with silent contumely . " In 1866 , eig hteen years afterwards , though the truth had been greatly advanced in the meantime by further developments , further attempts to obtain recognition

were equally unsuccessful , Earl De Grey and Ripon , then Grand Master , deciding that however interesting the discoveries , they were beyond the scope of ordinary Masonry . Mr . Melville then betook himself in despair to the Freemasons' Magazine , in order to excite the

curiosity of the brethren by indirect reference to the mysteries , in the hope of awakening or regenerating the dormant science , but , he adds with the bitterness of unrequited love , not yet grown into self-contained cynicism , "I only aroused a set of Masonic scorpions . "

Rejected of Freemasons , Mr . Melville found consolation in the appreciation of a woman , who , of course , is not a Freemason , or probably she mig ht have been found among the scorpions of which the Craft generally made up . Mrs . Lane , of Franc Fief , J ersey , lent a helping hand to Mr .

Melville ' s enterprise ; but , though she procured an interview with the Duke of Leinster , the Grand Master of Ireland , nothing came of it beyond a nobleman ' s chivalrous courtesy ; and a committee appointed to inquire ended in the well-accustomed blank as before . No other

course remained , therefore , than the publication of the Mysteries , the Veritas of which we have been speaking ; and published they are , dedicated by well-won honour to Mrs . Lane . They are now public pioperty , to be had by anybody ; and if the Freemasons are in any way compromised

thereby , it is apparent that they are rightly served . We have not indicated , however , what the mysteries are ; nor should we feel justified in anticipating the reader by a disclosure , though we had them at the tongue ' s end . But in truth , they are not easy to tell . They require a good

deal of leading up to before they can be appreciated . It depends on the idiosyncrasy . For ourselves , we have little time for the studious investigation of what does not promise us a profitable assimilation . But to those who have time and are inclined to explore mysteries , biblical , historical , and social , revealed by means of the

Median and Persian laws , the book ought to be welcome . As we have said , it is a brightlybound volume ; it has , moreover , many illustrations ; and , whether or not the reader may agree with the author ' s conclusions , he will be conducted through a field of inquiry which seems to us to be both rare and interesting .
