Notwithstanding the dense fog prevailing in the evening the brethren attended numerously . The lodge was closed in due form

and adjourned to the Crown room for the usual festivities , heightened by the musical abilities of Madame Barth , Miss Augarde , Bros . Carter and Distin . Amongst the customary toasts was one specially to "Bro . George States , the late Secretary of the Lodge , " on his retiring from the office he had filled so ably for nearly twenty years . The brethren , whilst regretting his retirement from active service , trusted to see their late Secretary amongst them for many years to come .

THE GREAT CITY LODGE ( No . 1426 ) . — The regular meeting of this lodge was held on Saturday evening , the 14 th inst ., at the Cannon-street Hotel . Bros . George W . Blackie , W . M . ; Freeman , I . P . M . ( acting S . W . ) ; Hamer , J . W . ; N . B . Headon , Treasurer ; and a goodly muster of brethren . The minutes of the last lodge having been read and confirmed , the lodge was

opened in the Second Degree , and Bro . Wood was questioned as to the progress that he had made , and it being considered satisfactory , the lodge was opened in the Third Degree , and he was duly raised to the Sublime Degree of a M . M ., the W . Master performing that ceremony with his usual ability . The next business was the passing of Bro . Murdoch to the position of a F . C , which was done

in an equally efficient manner . The lodge having been lowered to the First Degree , Mr . Jury was introduced , a ballot previously taken resulting favourably to him , and he was impressively initiated into the mysteries and privileges of Freemasonry . On the usual questions being put after the disposal of the ordinary business , Bro . Headon , the Treasurer , said he had received a letter from Bro .

Moody , the Secretary , dated from Blackpool , in Lancashire , stating that as it was almost certain that during the whole of the present year he should be away from London , he felt that he could not continue to do justice to the office of Secretary , and as he should be sorry for the interests of the lodge to suffer from the want of proper attention , he had decided , after serious consideration and

with much reluctance , to resign the office with which he had been invested . The announcement of Bro . Moody ' s resignation elicited a general feeling of regret . Bro . H . Thompson , P . M ., wished to know whether the decision to which Bro . Moody had come was irrevocable , or whether the causes that had drawn it forth were only temporary . Bro . Headon , P . M ., said he believed that they were not

temporary , and that , indeed , Bro . Moody had for some time past contemplated retiring from the office of Secretary . Bro . H . Thompson said , that being so , he would , with the permission of Bro . Headon , who proposed merely to move that Bro . Moody ' s resignation be accepted , substitute for it the following resolution , viz ., " That the resignation by Bro . Moody of his office of Secretary be accepted ,

but this lodge cannot but express its most sincere regret at the retirement of so useful and able an officer , and , although no longer officially connected with them , this lodge trusts that he may be long blessed with health , happiness , and prosperity , and continue for many years to be a member of the Great City Lodge . " He said he need offer no observations in support of this motion , as he believed the kind and

genial manners of Bro . Moody were so well-known and appreciated that he should find no dissentient to it . Bro . Freeman said he should have great pleasure in seconding the motion , and after a few observations from one or two members , the motion was put and agreed to unanimously , and Bro . Headon undertook immediately to

communicate the terms of the resolution to Bro . Moody . Bro . Headon said he had also received a letter from Bro . Catchpole , S . W ., in which he also stated that , in consequence of his almost continuous absence from town , he felt compelled to resign his office as Senior Warden of the lodge . This resignation was received with regret . Bro . Headon said he had received a communication in reference

to the existing distress in Ireland , soliciting subscriptions towards the Mansion House Fund . Now , the only fund which they hail available for such a purpose was the Samaritan , and he moved that the sum of ten guineas be voted from it to be applied to the Mansion House Fund for relieving the distress in Ireland . Bro . Freeman , I . P . M . seconded the motion , which was agreed to with but one

dissentient . Bro . Headon then brought forward a motion of which he had given notice at the last lodge , " That the sum of twenty-five guineas be voted from the funds of the lodge , to be placed on the list of Bro . Blackie , W . M ., who represents this lodge as Steward at the next festival for the benefit of the Royal Masonic Institution for Girls . " After a few observations this was also put and agreed to . The

lodge was then closed in due form and with solemn prayer .

There was no banquet , but most of the members assembled afterwards , when various questions were discussed with a view of promoting the welfare of the lodge , and several practical suggestions were thrown out , having for their object the extension of its usefulness and the combination of its proceedings with economy .
