PLUMSTEAD . — United Military Lodge ( No . 1536 ) . —The usual monthly meeting of the above lodge took place on Friday , the 13 th inst ., at the Lord Raglan , Burrage-road , Bro . H . Shaw , W . M ., in the chair , supported by the following officers : Bros . D . Deeves , S . W . ; H . Welding , J . W . ; G . Kennedy , Secretary ; W . Holleyman , S . D . ; H . Picken , I . P . M . ; W . Weston , P . M . ; and
T . D . Hayes , P . M . Among the visitors were Bros . T . Hutton , W . M . 13 ; J . Flynn , P . M . 720 ; ) . Warren , W . M . 700 ; T . Hunt , 224 ; T . Cain , 21 $ ; W . Lomax , 913 ; W . Akers , 13 ; and C . Jolly , 913 ( Freemason ) . The lodge having been opened in due form , and the minutes of the past meeting confirmed , the ballot was taken for two candidates , who were , after approval , initiated into Masonry .
Two bietbren were then passed , and one brother raised to the Sublime Degree . Tne lodge was then closed , and the brethren adjourned to refreshment . The usual loyal and Masonic toasts , both national and provincial , having been duly honoured , Bro . Picken rose to propose the toast of the W . M . He said that it was his pleasing duty to ask them to do honour to a toast that was always well received in
that lodge , " The Health of the W . M . " They had had the opportunity of seeing their W . M . work the Three Degrees that night , and notwithstanding the fact that he had been for some time past very unwell , he had done it totheir satisfaction . It showed that he had determined to fulfil the promise be made them at his installation , and he felt sure that before his year of office was . over they would
all say " well done , " and that he had been a hard working Master , and deserved well at their hands . Bro . Shaw , in reply , thanked them for their kindness . He could assure them that he had been very ill for some time past , and the first time he had left his house that day was to come to the lodge . But duty was the first call of every Master , and as such he felt that it was imperative for him to
attend his duties there . He knew that he had two very earnest and able Past Masters present , who would gladly have done the work for him , but he had determined to do it himself . He then gave the toast of " The Past Masters " in felicitous terms . Bro . Picken , I . P . M , replied , and after thanking the W . M . and brethren for their kindness , said it was no doubt a matter of surprise to young Masons that
the Past Masters , after they had passed the chair , and been relegated to the limbo of the lodge , should still come and take as much interest in the proceedings as ever ; but be could tell them that the Past Masters took the same , and even a greater , interest in the prosperity of the lodge alter they passed the chair than they did while working for its honours and its responsibilities . He was very pleased to
see in the Standard of the previous day a subject that was exceedingly interesting to Masons . A lady recently published a book in which she told the world that Freemasonry as taught in their lodges had only a standing of some three or four centuries , and had no existence at the time of the building of King Solomon ' s Temple ; but a startling revelation had been brought to light through the
uncovering and cleansing of the second Cleopatra ' s Needle , which had been presented by the Government of Egypt to the American people . Evidences were btought to light which showed that the signs and symbols used by them were used by the Master Masons at a time coeval or even before the building of King Solomon ' s Temple . That would show that there were Freemasons at the building
of the Temple , a fact that evidenced the antiquity claimed by them for their Craft , notwithstanding the lucubrations of the lady , who in her book labours to disprove it . Great credit was due to Captain Gorringe , who had brought these evidences to light . No doubt further discoveries
would fully substantiate the value of the statements made by him as to the antiquity of their dear old Cralt . " The Initiates , " were then toasted , and returned thanks . Bro . Hutton replied for "The Visitors , " and Bro . Deeves for " The Officers , " and after a verse of the National Anthem , the brethren departed to their various homes .

Undeniable credit is due to the Avon Lodge for being able
from amongst its members to produce three such expert brethren to perform this important ceremony as Bros . Bostock , Hooper , and Cavanah ; the first named brother being warmly congratulated for his ability as Installing Master . " Hearty good wishes " were expressed by the numerous visiting brethren , and the lodge was closed in peace and harmony at 8 . 30 . The brethren afterwards assembled at
the social board , where the usual loyal and Masonic toasts were enthusiastically honoured . "The Health of their absent Bro . Brickies " was proposed in felicitous terms by Bro . W . Brown , who dwelt upon his value as a Mason , his qualities as a man , and his general urbanity and kindness towards all those with whom he came in contact . In concluding his remarks , Bro . Brown expressed his confidence of the good feeling ar . d best wishes of every member
of the Avon Lodge towards Bro . Brickies , who he trusted was doing well , and whom , sooner or later , they might see amongst them once again . " The Health of the W . M ., I . P .
