It will thus be seen that in the vast Dominion of Canada , with an area of three million three hundred and thirty thousand square miles , bordered on tne south by the great American Republic of the United States , and extending northward to the frozen regions of the Pole- , washed on the east by the billows of the stormy Atlantic ,

and kissed on the west by the gentle waves of the Pacificwe reprcat in this vast tributary of the British Crown there are seven independent Sovereign Grand Lodges , with an a „ gregate membership of twenty-seven thousand * Three provinces have independent Sovereign Grand Chapters , Viz * , Ontario , Nova Scotiaj and Quebec ; two Grand Councils of Royal and Select Masters , viz ., New

Brunswick and Ontario ; whilst the authority of each of the Riles and Orders of Les Hautes Grades respectively extend over the whole Dominion—as the Templar , the Ancient and Accepted Rite , the Ancient and Primitive Rite , thc Swedenborg Rite , eic . Thc Templar , of course , is nominally under the Convent-General of England . H . R . H . the Prince of Wales is acknowledged by

Canadian Praters of the Temple as Sovereign Grand Master , whilst necessarily the Royal Order of Scotland owes alleg iance to the land of its nativity . Masonic harmony and peace prevail in every province , except ftaebec , where the differences caused by the formation of the so-called District Grand Lodge of Montreal , under the authority of the Grand Lodge of Scotland , still

cause some trouble . Let us hope , however , that the silver lining of the cloud is now breaking forth , and that , under the reign of the erudite M . W . Bro . J . H . Graham , M . A ., LL . D ., G . M . of thc Grand Lodge of Quebec , and G . Z . of the Grand Chapter of Quebec , thc light of Masonry will so shed its resplendent rays as to break up the clouds that now darken thc sky of Freemasonry in that

fair province . Let us also extend the hope that the Scottish Encampments in St . John and St . Stephen's , New Brunswick , will at an early date ally themselves with the Great P / inry of Canada , and then Templary in thc Dominion will be even more prosperous than it now Is . There are also still three iodges working in Montreal on the English registry , but they are on friendly terms with the Grand

Lodge of Quebec , and there is one lodge at L'Ongnal , Ontario , on the roll of the Grand Lodge of Ireland . The sooner all these bodies give in their allegiance to the Sovereign Bodies of the country in which they are located the better it will prove for all parties concerned . Take it as a whole , however , Canadians have a right to be proud of the Craft in the Dominion . Their Charities

are liberal , their working excellent , and the administration of their laws is carried out with justice and dignity . DEATH OF A DISTINGUISHED FREEMASON . — It is with much regret we announce the death of Bro . Lieut .-Col . L'Estrange , who was found dead in bis bed on Monday last . He had been in failing health for some little time past , but his death was quite unexpected .

Col . L'Estrange held the appointment of Grand Superintendent of Norfolk , to which office he was appointed by H . R . H . the Prince of Wales on June 24 th , 18 79 . His love of Masonry and his kindly presence will long be remembered by the brethren , and we much deplore the loss of so distinguished a member of the Craft .

According to an official statement published on Wednesday at St . Petersburg , at about seven o ' clock on Tutsday evening an explosion occurred in the basement of the Imperial Winter Palace under the principal guard-room ,

the flooring of which and several gaspipes were damaged . Eight soldiers of the guard were killed , and forty-five others injured . Another telegram states that a gap ten feet long and six feet wide was made in the floor of the Imperial dining-room , which is immediately over the guard-room . Through an accidental delay the Imperial family had not assembled to dine when the explosion took place .

We understand that the Freemasons connected with the town and neig hbourhood of ; Cheltenham are contemplating filling in one of the windows of thc beautiful old parish church there with stained glass . The window selected is the large east window , and a design furnished by our W . Bro . N . W . Lavers , of the eminent firm of Lavers , Barraud , and Co ., of Endell-street , Bloomsbury , of

has already b ^ en approved for this purpose . Tbe church , which is a very aucient one ( portions dating from A . o . 1150 ) , is replete with many objects of deep antiquarian interest , and has recently been restored at a considerable outlay . Wc have no doubt but that the eminent firm to which the order has been entrusted will do ample justice to the work , and we congratulate our Cheltenham brethren

upon the conception of so interesting a work , and heartily wish them success . There are two good and old lodges working in the town of Cheltenham , viz ., the Foundation Lodge , No . 82 ( over which , we believe , the parish churchwarden most successfully presides as W .
