The Adoptive Rite of the Eastern Star and unmoveable Side Degrees , including the Order of St . Lawrence and kn's ht of thc Palm aud She 11 ' als 0 cxist in the lan < 1 of the map le leaf . In addition to these m £ Lny degrees , grades , rites and rders there are several members of the Oriental Order of Apex or Sat B'hai , but , o ! course , the number of these is
limited . It will thus be seen that in the vast Dominion of Canada , with an area of three million three hundred and thirty thousand square miles , bordered on tne south by the great American Republic of the United States , and extending northward to the frozen regions of the Pole- , washed on the east by the billows of the stormy Atlantic ,
and kissed on the west by the gentle waves of the Pacificwe reprcat in this vast tributary of the British Crown there are seven independent Sovereign Grand Lodges , with an a „ gregate membership of twenty-seven thousand * Three provinces have independent Sovereign Grand Chapters , Viz * , Ontario , Nova Scotiaj and Quebec ; two Grand Councils of Royal and Select Masters , viz ., New
Brunswick and Ontario ; whilst the authority of each of the Riles and Orders of Les Hautes Grades respectively extend over the whole Dominion—as the Templar , the Ancient and Accepted Rite , the Ancient and Primitive Rite , thc Swedenborg Rite , eic . Thc Templar , of course , is nominally under the Convent-General of England . H . R . H . the Prince of Wales is acknowledged by
Canadian Praters of the Temple as Sovereign Grand Master , whilst necessarily the Royal Order of Scotland owes alleg iance to the land of its nativity . Masonic harmony and peace prevail in every province , except ftaebec , where the differences caused by the formation of the so-called District Grand Lodge of Montreal , under the authority of the Grand Lodge of Scotland , still
cause some trouble . Let us hope , however , that the silver lining of the cloud is now breaking forth , and that , under the reign of the erudite M . W . Bro . J . H . Graham , M . A ., LL . D ., G . M . of thc Grand Lodge of Quebec , and G . Z . of the Grand Chapter of Quebec , thc light of Masonry will so shed its resplendent rays as to break up the clouds that now darken thc sky of Freemasonry in that
fair province . Let us also extend the hope that the Scottish Encampments in St . John and St . Stephen's , New Brunswick , will at an early date ally themselves with the Great P / inry of Canada , and then Templary in thc Dominion will be even more prosperous than it now Is . There are also still three iodges working in Montreal on the English registry , but they are on friendly terms with the Grand
Lodge of Quebec , and there is one lodge at L'Ongnal , Ontario , on the roll of the Grand Lodge of Ireland . The sooner all these bodies give in their allegiance to the Sovereign Bodies of the country in which they are located the better it will prove for all parties concerned . Take it as a whole , however , Canadians have a right to be proud of the Craft in the Dominion . Their Charities
are liberal , their working excellent , and the administration of their laws is carried out with justice and dignity . We would remind our " ball-going' readers that the fourth annual ball of the Carnarvon and Mizpah Lodges , Nos . 1572 and 1671 , takes place at the Cannonstreet Hotel , on Friday next , on which occasion the Stewards will be pleased to have the company of brethren of other lodges , also their friends who are not Masons . The success that has attended their previous undertakings
is a sufficient guarantee for a most enjoyable ball on the date above mentioned . As the number of tickets are of necessity limited early application should be made to the Hon Sec , Bro . Nelson Reed , St . Helen ' s Lodge , Lee , S . E . The subscription list to the Ledger Testimonial Fund will close on Tuesday next . The presentation will take place under the presidency of Bro . Henry
Irving , on an early date , at the Lyceum Theatre . At the monthl y meeting of the Social Lodge , No . 93 , Norwich , on Tuesday , thc 10 th inst ., Bro . J . Bridgman , W . M ., presented , on behalf cf the lodge , an Jl-caratgold " centenary" jewel to Bro , Joseph Stanley , P . M . of Lodge Perseverance , as a mark of the appreciation of his services in procuring a warrant from Grand Lodge
authorising Lodge Social to wear " centenary" jewels , which ornaments are intended to show that the lodge to which they are granted has been establishej a hundred years . A similar jewel was presented at the same time to Bro . John Moore , I . P . M ., he being W . M . of the lodge at the time Grand Lodge accorded the above distinction . . The Norfolk and Norwich Masonic Hall
Company is looking up again ; from thc re | x * rt just issued we find thc balance at Gurneys' is £ 1680 and at Lacon ' s £ ni , £ l 5 ° ' ng paid as deposit on the purchase of the site next thc Rink in St . Giles' . The amount of share capital not called up is £ 1870 5 s . ; present available capital £ 3848 4 s . ; 4135 shares have been taken up , and the first call paid on 3 813 . There is a glimmer of hope
that the company may get out of their muddle over the above land ; application has been made to the Master of the Rolls in re Warner Wright ' s action , to raise the question as to rescinding his contract , and if it succeeds possibly there will be an end to the matter . In the meantime that lively young gentleman has had notice that he would forego all claims to interest , costs , and damages if he
abandoned his claim to the £ 105 deposit , but we have not heard that he has replied thereto from London . The Fifteen Sections were worked at the Wellington Lodge of Instruction , held at the White Swan Hotel , High-street , Deptford , on Monday evening last , 16 th inst . Bro . J . G . Milbourn , Preceptor of the Excelsior Lodge , No . 1155 , and Temperance Lodge ,
No . 169 , presided on the oecasion . The name of Bro . the Rev . R . P . Bent , P . G . C , wa . 5 omitted from the list of those who attended the Festival of the Royal Masonic Benevolent Institution . Bro . Bent acted as Grand Chaplain on that occasion . Bro . H . R . H . the Duke of Connaught
P . G . W ., has kindly consented to preside at the dinner on behalf of the Royal" Albert Orphan Asylum , on Friday , 5 th of March . The Lord Mayor , Bro . Sir Francis Wyatt Truscstt , and Sheriffs will also be present . Bro . Frederic Julius Macaulay has been appointed Secretary of the London and South Western Railway Company .
A Grand Council of Royal and Select and Super-Excellent Masters will be held at 2 , Red Lion-Square , on Thursday , the 26 th inst . The final meeting of the Board of Stewards of the recent Festival of the Royal Masonic Benevolent Institution will be held at Freemasons' Hall on Tuesday , the 24 th inst .
We regret having to record the death , after a short illness , of the eldest son of Bro . James Horwood , of Paternoster-rowand Crosby House , Lewisham . Bros . ex-Sheriffs Burt and Bevan will be entertained at a banquet by the members of the Court of
Aldermen at Siationers ' s Hall on Friday next . We are asked to state that the meetings of the Ogmore Lodge , No . 1752 , are now held on the fourth Monday in each month at the Masonic Hall , Bridgend , Glamorgan .
Bro . Sir Francis Wyatt Truscott ( Lord Mayor ) was presented at the levee oh Tuesday last by the Right Hon . the Earl of Beaconsfield . H . R . H . the Prince of Wales has consented to preside at a festival dinner in aid of the funds of the Westminster Hospital , on the 13 th proximo , at Willis ' s Rooms .
DEATH OF A DISTINGUISHED FREEMASON . — It is with much regret we announce the death of Bro . Lieut .-Col . L'Estrange , who was found dead in bis bed on Monday last . He had been in failing health for some little time past , but his death was quite unexpected .
Col . L'Estrange held the appointment of Grand Superintendent of Norfolk , to which office he was appointed by H . R . H . the Prince of Wales on June 24 th , 18 79 . His love of Masonry and his kindly presence will long be remembered by the brethren , and we much deplore the loss of so distinguished a member of the Craft .
HoiwwAv's PILLS AND O , NTMENr . —These corrective remedies enable the strong to ureserve their health and afford an easy means for tbe weak and ailing to restore it . Working at high pressure , as thousands daily do , to support life , it is but little wonder that the digestion becomes defective , tile heart irutable , the bowels constipated , and the mental faculties dimmed . Let
all such sufferers apply themselves at once to these mcdicamen's , and use them according to the plain directions which accompany them ; then the disordered functions will soon respond to their action , and the physical and mtutal powers will be quietly recuperated , producing a feeling of lightness and ease , which in . itself is worth its weight in gold , —f Abvr . ]

Bro . A . J . Altman , I . P . M . of the Aldersgate Lodge , 16 57 , has been eleeted as one of the representatives for the ward of Aldersgate in the Common Council . The following brethren attended as Stewards at the fourth annual ball of the New Concord Lodge at Freemasons' Tavern on the 10 th inst : —Bros . R . R . Harper , W . M . ; S . George , S . W . ; W . Taylor , S . D . ; J . Thomas , J . D . ; W . Pierpoint , I . G . ; J . Stihvell , T . ; j " . Boulton , S . ; A . J . Potter , D . C . ; H . J . Allardyce , P . Harnett , G . Mustoe . According to an official statement published on Wednesday at St . Petersburg , at about seven o ' clock on Tutsday evening an explosion occurred in the basement of the Imperial Winter Palace under the principal guard-room ,
the flooring of which and several gaspipes were damaged . Eight soldiers of the guard were killed , and forty-five others injured . Another telegram states that a gap ten feet long and six feet wide was made in the floor of the Imperial dining-room , which is immediately over the guard-room . Through an accidental delay the Imperial family had not assembled to dine when the explosion took place .
In our report of the Aldersgate Lodge meeting last week wc omitted to include among those brethren who had sent apologies for non-attendance Bros . Colonel Creaton , G . Treas . ; Colonel Shadwell H . Clcike , G . Sec . ; Sir Albert Woods , G . D . of C . ; and Edgar Bowyer . We
should also have stated that Bro . Hyde Pullen delivered the charges at the installation ceremony 1 . 1 his usually impressive and able manner ; and that Bro . Bcnskin , of the Castle and Falcon Hotel , deserved much praise for the very choice and recherche banquet he set before the brethren .
We understand that the Freemasons connected with the town and neig hbourhood of ; Cheltenham are contemplating filling in one of the windows of thc beautiful old parish church there with stained glass . The window selected is the large east window , and a design furnished by our W . Bro . N . W . Lavers , of the eminent firm of Lavers , Barraud , and Co ., of Endell-street , Bloomsbury , of
has already b ^ en approved for this purpose . Tbe church , which is a very aucient one ( portions dating from A . o . 1150 ) , is replete with many objects of deep antiquarian interest , and has recently been restored at a considerable outlay . Wc have no doubt but that the eminent firm to which the order has been entrusted will do ample justice to the work , and we congratulate our Cheltenham brethren
upon the conception of so interesting a work , and heartily wish them success . There are two good and old lodges working in the town of Cheltenham , viz ., the Foundation Lodge , No . 82 ( over which , we believe , the parish churchwarden most successfully presides as W . M . ) , and thc Royal Union Lodge , 246 , both of which fully maintain
the hig h character which their number upon the Grand Roll and position would indicate . The second edition of the Cosmopolitan Masonic Pocket Book , containing lists of lodges , chapters , and every information relating to Freemasonry of every Degree , is now ready , price , post free , 2 S . id . Office , 198 , Fleet-street , London . —( ADVT .
The installation meeting of the Islington Lodge , No . 1471 , took place on Thursday week , the 12 th inst ., there being a large attendance of brethren , including many visitors . Bro . U . Knell was installed in the chair of King Solomon . A very pleasant evening was spent . The accident to the " Lively" will necessitate a change in the plans of H . R . H . Prince Leopold . His intended cruise in thc Mediterranean has been postponed .
