CHINGFORD . William Shurmur Lodge ( No . 2374 ) . —AN EXTRAORDINARY DAY ' WORK IN FREEMASONRY . —A meeting of this lodge was held at the Royal Forest Hotel , on Tuesday , 17 th instant , when there were more than 100 brethren present . Among the visitors were Bros .

The Prov . Grand Master , Lord Brooke , having graciously granted a dispensation , twelve gentlemen were initiated into Freemasonry . The Second Degree was conferred upon twelve brethren , and five brethren were granted the privilege of inscribing themselves M . M . The proceedings , which lasted nearly seven hours , were carried out with the greatest possible accuracy and impressiveness , reflecting the highest credit upon everyone

concerned . The W . M . was nominated a candidate for the Board of General Purposes . Seventeen propositions were received for initiation and joining . The lodge was then closed , and the brethren adjourned for refreshments , and the customary toasts were duly proposed and honoured . The amount of Masonic business transacted at this meeting was considered by many of the P . M . 's present to be the largest on record .

DERBY . Arboretum Lodge ( No . 731 ) . —The regular monthly meeting was held at the Masonic Hall , on Wednesday , the nth inst ., this being the meeting for the election of W . was proceeded with , and the choice of the brethren fell on the S . W ., Bro . Geo . Sutherland , who warmly thanked the lirethren for the honour conferred upon him . Bro . W . Whittaker , P . M ., P . P . G . R ., was re-elected Treasurer , and Bro . Thos . Day , Tyler . Bro . G . R . Magnus , 130 ( I . C ) , was elected a joining member . A Past Master ' s jewel was voted to the retiring W . M ., on the motion of Bro . C

Webster , P . M ., seconded by Bro . J . Worsnop , P . M . It was ordered also that the officers' collars and gauntlets be either repaired or new ones provided . On the proposition of Bro . J . Bland , P . M . . seconded by Bro . A . Woodiwiss , P . M ., Bro . George Sutherland , S . W ., W . M . elect , was chosen to represent the lodge at the next Festival of the Boys ' School , and notice of motion was given that a sum not

exceeding 25 guineas be taken from the lodge funds and placed upon his list . A candidate for initiation was proceeded with , and the W . M . having been accorded the "Hearty good wishes" of the visiting brethren , the lodge was closed . The brethren adjourned for refreshment , and after the toast of "The Queen and the Craft" had been honoured , the VV . M . announced that the evening would be devoted to

music and singing . It was , however , considered that as this was the last night Bro . Walker would preside , the toast of his health ought not to be omitted . It was therefore proposed by Bro . A . Frazer , P . M ., in a short , earnest speech , and was mos heartily responded to . The VV . M ., in responding , assured the brethren that the

year had been a very happy one , and had passed all too soon . He hoped the lodge would still continue to prosper , and that the Past Masters and officers would extend to the incoming W . M . the same help and support they had so regularly given to him . Songs were sung by Bros . J . Melrose , W . H . Wright , A . Butterworth , J . F . Race , W . N . Toft , W . Eastman , and J . W . Brigg . Bro . H . Hankinson presided at the piano . The following brethren discoursed most excellent music

Bro . E . j . King also gave a solo on the oboe . The Tyler's toast brought a most agreeable meeting to a conclusion . Since writing this the brethren have heard with sincere regret of the death of Bro . Severn Taylor , P . M ., who at the last meeting of Provincial Grand Lodge in

Provincial Meetings.

December was appointed P . S . G . D . Bro . Taylor was widely known throughout the province , being * a constant visitor at many of the lodges , and he was a good supporter of the Charities . He was a member of the Chapter of Truth and the Derby Lodge of Mark Masters .

Dalrymple to endow two chairs for the R . M . I , for Boys , which met with the cordial support of the W . M . and officers , and is to be added to a Stewardship for the next Festival . With other general business , the lodge was closed .

Aire and Calder Lodge ( No . 458 ) . —On Friday , the 12 th inst ., this lodge—their regalia , rooms , & c , having been entirely destroyed by fire on the 2 * Sth ult . —met at the Lowther Hotel , there being present Bros . On the present

occasion the brethren were indebted to the kindness of the brethren of St . Nicholas Lodge , No . 2259 , who kindly placed at their disposal their regalia . The W . M . opened the proceedings by reading the dispensation granted by the P . G . M ., and a lengthy discussion took place as to the best course to be taken under the circumstances . It was decided , after thanking by resolution the P . G . M . and D . P . G . M . for

the help they had already given , to apply for a warrant of confirmation , and Committees of Past Masters were appointed to deal with this matter , and also to purchase such a regalia as would enable the lodge to carry on its work comfortably until a more definite and permanent arrangement could be made . Sympathy was generally

expressed by the brethren with the W . M . on the trying circumstances in which he was placed , and he was assured of the support of all of those present . A very satisfactory report was received from Bro . Ezra Gooderidge , P . M ., the local representative of the Economic Assurance Company , who said that there was every prospect of the claim being promptly settled in full . The lodge was then closed .

Brown , was presented and installed into the chair of K . S . by the Installing Master , Bro . G . W . Page , P . M ., P . P . G . R ., assisted by Bro . J . S . B . Glasier , P . M .,

P . P . J . G . W ., by whom the ceremony was performed in an impressive and able manner in the presence of a full Board of Installed Masters . The lodge was honoured with the presence of Bro . Hamon Le Strange , the recently elected D . P . G . M . of Norfolk , who was received by the brethren of the lodge ( of which he has been an honorary member for several years ) with acclamation and greeted with the usual

salute . There was a good attendance of the brethren and also of visitors . After the installation the brethren adjourned to the Globe Hotel , where an excellent banquet was provided by Bro . Marshall .

The usual loyal and customary toasts were proposed , including " The Health of the D . P . G . M ., " proposed by Bro . Pridgeon , the Mayor of King ' s Lynn . The lodge will have completed its Sist year on the 22 nd prox ., and has 70 subscribing members , including H . R . H . the M . W . G . M ., who joined the lodge on the 9 th May , 1 S 70 .

TWICKENHAM . Sir Francis Burdett Lodge ( No . 1503 ) . —This lodge met on the nth inst ., at the Albany Hotel . Among those in attendance were Bros . A . Toulmin , jun ., W . M . ; the Rev . S . T . H . Saunders , P . M ., P . P . G . Chap ., acting S . W . ; A . H . Gurney , P . M ., P . G . Steward , acting I . W . ; I . T . Briggs , P . M ., P . P . G . D ., Treas . ; Captain

seconded , the following proposition : " That the sum of live guineas be voted to the R . M . B . I . for the W . M ., as Steward at the forthcoming Festival . The Prov . Grand Master , Lord Brooke , having graciously granted a dispensation , twelve gentlemen were initiated into Freemasonry . The Second Degree was conferred upon twelve brethren , and five brethren were granted the privilege of inscribing themselves M . M . The proceedings , which lasted nearly seven hours , were carried out with the greatest possible accuracy and impressiveness , reflecting the highest credit upon everyone

concerned . The W . M . was nominated a candidate for the Board of General Purposes . Seventeen propositions were received for initiation and joining . The lodge was then closed , and the brethren adjourned for refreshments , and the customary toasts were duly proposed and honoured . The amount of Masonic business transacted at this meeting was considered by many of the P . M . 's present to be the largest on record .

A Past Master ' s jewel was voted to the retiring W . M ., on the motion of Bro . C

Webster , P . M ., seconded by Bro . J . Worsnop , P . M . It was ordered also that the officers' collars and gauntlets be either repaired or new ones provided . On the proposition of Bro . J . Bland , P . M . . seconded by Bro . A . Woodiwiss , P . M ., Bro . George Sutherland , S . W ., W . M . elect , was chosen to represent the lodge at the next Festival of the Boys ' School , and notice of motion was given that a sum not

exceeding 25 guineas be taken from the lodge funds and placed upon his list . A candidate for initiation was proceeded with , and the W . M . having been accorded the "Hearty good wishes" of the visiting brethren , the lodge was closed . The brethren adjourned for refreshment , and after the toast of "The Queen and the Craft" had been honoured , the VV . M . announced that the evening would be devoted to

music and singing . It was , however , considered that as this was the last night Bro . Walker would preside , the toast of his health ought not to be omitted . It was therefore proposed by Bro . A . Frazer , P . M ., in a short , earnest speech , and was mos heartily responded to . The VV . M ., in responding , assured the brethren that the

year had been a very happy one , and had passed all too soon . He hoped the lodge would still continue to prosper , and that the Past Masters and officers would extend to the incoming W . M . the same help and support they had so regularly given to him . Songs were sung by Bros . J . Melrose , W . H . Wright , A . Butterworth , J . F . Race , W . N . Toft , W . Eastman , and J . W . Brigg . Bro . H . Hankinson presided at the piano . The following brethren discoursed most excellent music

Since writing this the brethren have heard with sincere regret of the death of Bro . Severn Taylor , P . M ., who at the last meeting of Provincial Grand Lodge in

December was appointed P . S . G . D . Bro . Taylor was widely known throughout the province , being * a constant visitor at many of the lodges , and he was a good supporter of the Charities . He was a member of the Chapter of Truth and the Derby Lodge of Mark Masters .

Aire and Calder Lodge ( No . 458 ) . —On Friday , the 12 th inst ., this lodge—their regalia , rooms , & c , having been entirely destroyed by fire on the 2 * Sth ult . —met at the Lowther Hotel , there being present Bros . occasion the brethren were indebted to the kindness of the brethren of St . Nicholas Lodge , No . 2259 , who kindly placed at their disposal their regalia . The W . M . opened the proceedings by reading the dispensation granted by the P . G . M ., and a lengthy discussion took place as to the best course to be taken under the circumstances . It was decided , after thanking by resolution the P . G . M . and D . P . G . M . for

the help they had already given , to apply for a warrant of confirmation , and Committees of Past Masters were appointed to deal with this matter , and also to purchase such a regalia as would enable the lodge to carry on its work comfortably until a more definite and permanent arrangement could be made . Sympathy was generally

expressed by the brethren with the W . M . on the trying circumstances in which he was placed , and he was assured of the support of all of those present . A very satisfactory report was received from Bro . Ezra Gooderidge , P . M ., the local representative of the Economic Assurance Company , who said that there was every prospect of the claim being promptly settled in full . The lodge was then closed .

P . P . J . G . W ., by whom the ceremony was performed in an impressive and able manner in the presence of a full Board of Installed Masters . The lodge was honoured with the presence of Bro . Hamon Le Strange , the recently elected D . P . G . M . of Norfolk , who was received by the brethren of the lodge ( of which he has been an honorary member for several years ) with acclamation and greeted with the usual

salute . There was a good attendance of the brethren and also of visitors . After the installation the brethren adjourned to the Globe Hotel , where an excellent banquet was provided by Bro . Marshall .

The usual loyal and customary toasts were proposed , including " The Health of the D . P . G . M ., " proposed by Bro . Pridgeon , the Mayor of King ' s Lynn . The lodge will have completed its Sist year on the 22 nd prox ., and has 70 subscribing members , including H . R . H . the M . W . G . M ., who joined the lodge on the 9 th May , 1 S 70 .
