choice of the members of Curwen Lodge , at a time when all the good qualities he possessed were brought fully into play to establish them in their new hall , and although , like the poet , casting back one glance at the past , he ( Bro . Wynn ) could not help but prophesying that the future of No . 1400

appeared to be all that could be desired . Bro . Kerly , briefly responded , and expressed himself as highly p leased to see so many visitors present at the opening of the new hall , and like Bro . Wynn , P . M ., he had great faith in the future prosperity of Curwen Lodge . Other toasts and songs followed , and a most agreeable evening was spent .

as well as the Craft ceremonial . He had also presided most genially at the festive board , and was in every way worthy of the jewel that had been so unanimously voted to him . The M . E . Z ., in reply , said that he was pleased to think that not only the I . P . Z . but the companions generally were satisfied with his humble efforts . His career in the

Kennington Lodge and Chapter had been personally to him most gratifying , and he hoped to be associated with those institutions for many years to come . Other toasts quickly followed . In giving "The Health of the Treasurer and S . E ., " the

M . E . Z . spoke most flatteringly of the efforts of those companions for the good of the chapter . The former would shortly occupy a very high position in the Order , and he trusted that he ( Comp . George Everett ) would live many years to enjoy the distinction . Comps . Everett and Higgins having replied , the proceedings shortly afterwards terminated .

The ceremonies , in the unavoidable absence of Bro . C . F . Matier , P . G . W ., G . Sec , were performed by Bro . the Very Rev . E . R . Currie , Dean of Battle , P . G . Chap ., D . P . G . M . Bro . Dr . Alfred King was unanimously elected VV . M . for the ensuing

year , and Bro . T . Billing was re-elected Treasurer . The lodge having been closed , the brethren adjourned to the banqueting room , where they sat down to an excellent banquet supplied by Bro . D . Mutton . The W . M ., Bro . Richard Clowes , presided . The customary Mark Masonic toasts were duly honoured , Bro . H . W . G . Abell , G . Std . Br ., responding for "The

Officers of Grand Mark Lodge , Present and Past . " The Worshipful Master , in proposing "H . R . H . the Duke of Connaught , P . G . M ., " said arrangements were being made for the visit of his Royal Highness to Brighton , on the occasion of his installation as P . G . M . He ( the VV . M . ) was sure the Duke of Connaught would receive that warm welcome which he justly merited .

In proposing "Bro . the Very Rev . E . R . Currie , Dean of Battle , P . G . Chap ., D . P . G . M ., and the Officers of Provincial Grand Lodge , Present and Past , " the W . M . apologised for the absence of Bro . Currie , who had been compelled to leave to catch his train . Bro . Currie wished to thank the brethren for the hearty reception they had given him in the lodge . All present had been pleased to

see him amongst them , and appreciated the admirable manner in which , in the absence of Bro . Matier , through illness , he had performed the ceremonies of advancement . The province was greatly indebted to its officers , who carried out their duties most ably , and were always ready to assist the various lodges . Bros . S . R . Legg and J . P . Slingsby Roberts responded .

Bro . J . Farncombe gave "The Worshipful Master , " a toast which , he said , was sure to meet with a hearty reception . Bro . Clowes had , by his able work and hospitality , proved himself a thorough Mason . The first year of the Royal Connaught Lodge had been a successful one , and that success was attributable , in no small degree , to the able manner in which Bro . Clowes had carried out his

duties , and he ( Bro . Farncombe ) wished the W . M . long life and prosperity . Bro . Clowes , on rising to respond , was enthusiastically received . Thanking Bro . Farncombe for his kind words , he said that when , by the lamented death of the late Bro . Crawford Pocock , he became VV . VI ., he determined to do all he could to follow in that brother ' s footsteps , and

advance the interests of the Royal Connaught Loire . He was proud to see such a gathering at the last meeting of the lodge during his year of office , and he should ever remember the hearty reception accorded him . Bro . Clowes then proposed " The W . M . designate of the Brighton Lodge . " He congratulated Bro . Willard upon his election as W . M ., and the brethren upon the

happy selection they had made . He had been pleased to assist the new lodge by having the brethren advanced that evening . He hoped to find the Royal Connaught and Brighton Lodges go hand-in-hand for the good ot Mark-Masonry . Bro . Willard , who was very warmly received on rising to respond , took the opportunity of thanking the founders

of the Brighton Lodge for forwarding his name to Grand Lodge as their first VV . M . He would do his best for Mark Masonry , and hoped the Brighton Lodge would prove a great success . He also thanked Bro . Clowes for allowing the brethren to be advanced in the Royal Connaught Lodge , and thus enabling them to be present at the approaching consecration of the new lodge and at the installation of

H . R . H . the Duke ol Connaught . The VVorshipful Master proposed "The Advancees , " to which Bros . Burfield , Brown , and Blakcr responded . He then gave " Thc Visitors , " which Bros , the Rev . Tooth , Botting , Hollman , and Gill acknowledged . The remaining toasts were "The Officers of the Lodge , " to which Bros . A . King and the Secretary responded , and the Tyler's toast .

During the evening pleasing songs were given by Bros . F . Clements , F . Cully , Dyer , S . H . Soper ( Mayor of Brighton ) , A . Brazier , R . Willard , and G . Cole ; Mr . Lewis Mennich and Bro . Dr . Whittle played a violin and ocarina duet in good style ; and Bro . Chapman Marshall contributed an excellent pianoforte solo . The duties of accompanist were admirably carried out by Bro . W . Norman Roe , Prov . G . O .

Wynn ) could not help but prophesying that the future of No . 1400

as well as the Craft ceremonial . He had also presided most genially at the festive board , and was in every way worthy of the jewel that had been so unanimously voted to him . The M . E . Z ., in reply , said that he was pleased to think that not only the I . P . Z . but the companions generally were satisfied with his humble efforts . His career in the

Kennington Lodge and Chapter had been personally to him most gratifying , and he hoped to be associated with those institutions for many years to come . Other toasts quickly followed . In giving "The Health of the Treasurer and S . E ., " the

M . E . Z . spoke most flatteringly of the efforts of those companions for the good of the chapter . Officers of Grand Mark Lodge , Present and Past . " The Worshipful Master , in proposing "H . R . H . the Duke of Connaught , P . G . M ., " said arrangements were being made for the visit of his Royal Highness to Brighton , on the occasion of his installation as P . G . M . He ( the VV . M . ) was sure the Duke of Connaught would receive that warm welcome which he justly merited .

In proposing "Bro . the Very Rev . E . R . Currie , Dean of Battle , P . G . Chap ., D . P . G . M ., and the Officers of Provincial Grand Lodge , Present and Past , " the W . M . apologised for the absence of Bro . Currie , who had been compelled to leave to catch his train . Bro . Currie wished to thank the brethren for the hearty reception they had given him in the lodge . All present had been pleased to

see him amongst them , and appreciated the admirable manner in which , in the absence of Bro . Matier , through illness , he had performed the ceremonies of advancement . The province was greatly indebted to its officers , who carried out their duties most ably , and were always ready to assist the various lodges . Bros . S . R . Legg and J . P . Slingsby Roberts responded .

Bro . J . Farncombe gave "The Worshipful Master , " a toast which , he said , was sure to meet with a hearty reception . Bro . Clowes had , by his able work and hospitality , proved himself a thorough Mason . The first year of the Royal Connaught Lodge had been a successful one , and that success was attributable , in no small degree , to the able manner in which Bro . Clowes had carried out his

duties , and he ( Bro . Farncombe ) wished the W . M . long life and prosperity . Bro . Clowes , on rising to respond , was enthusiastically received . Thanking Bro . Farncombe for his kind words , he said that when , by the lamented death of the late Bro . Crawford Pocock , he became VV . VI ., he determined to do all he could to follow in that brother ' s footsteps , and

advance the interests of the Royal Connaught Loire . He was proud to see such a gathering at the last meeting of the lodge during his year of office , and he should ever remember the hearty reception accorded him . Bro . Clowes then proposed " The W . M . designate of the Brighton Lodge . " He congratulated Bro . Willard upon his election as W . M ., and the brethren upon the

happy selection they had made . He had been pleased to assist the new lodge by having the brethren advanced that evening . He hoped to find the Royal Connaught and Brighton Lodges go hand-in-hand for the good ot Mark-Masonry . Bro . Willard , who was very warmly received on rising to respond , took the opportunity of thanking the founders

of the Brighton Lodge for forwarding his name to Grand Lodge as their first VV . M . He would do his best for Mark Masonry , and hoped the Brighton Lodge would prove a great success . He also thanked Bro . Clowes for allowing the brethren to be advanced in the Royal Connaught Lodge , and thus enabling them to be present at the approaching consecration of the new lodge and at the installation of

H . R . H . the Duke ol Connaught . The VVorshipful Master proposed "The Advancees , " to which Bros . Burfield , Brown , and Blakcr responded . He then gave " Thc Visitors , " which Bros , the Rev . Tooth , Botting , Hollman , and Gill acknowledged . The remaining toasts were "The Officers of the Lodge , " to which Bros . A . King and the Secretary responded , and the Tyler's toast .

During the evening pleasing songs were given by Bros . F . Clements , F . Cully , Dyer , S . H . Soper ( Mayor of Brighton ) , A . Brazier , R . Willard , and G . Cole ; Mr . Lewis Mennich and Bro . Dr . Whittle played a violin and ocarina duet in good style ; and Bro . Chapman Marshall contributed an excellent pianoforte solo . The duties of accompanist were admirably carried out by Bro . W . Norman Roe , Prov . G . O .
