Bro . Thomas J . Shryock , the energetic and efficient Grand Master of Masons in Maryland , visited the Masonic Temple , Philadelphia , on Wednesday evening last , where he vvas cordially greeted by Bros . Patton , Grand Treas ., Kelly , J . G . W ., and other brethren . The Maryland brethren are not cast down by reason of having passed through their recent fiery ordeal . The loss on the Masonic Temple vvas over , Si 5 o , ooo , but with the insurance of

The profits , after making due allowance for depreciation of leaseholds , plant , fixturesgoodwill & c .,

, , for the current and contingent expenses , amount to £ 25 , 491 19 s . ? d . To this the sum of £ 1750 is . 4 d ., being the unappropriated balance of profit for the year 1 SS 9 , must be added , making a total of £ 27 , 242 os . H . Nail , W . M ., was designed and manufactured by Bro . George Kenning . Bro . the Duke of Athole has arrived in town from Scotland . His son , the Marquis of Tullibardine , has gone to Italy , where he will spend the next three months .

The Countess of Lathom , vvith two of her daughters , the Ladies Alice and Edith Wilbraham , left England on Wednesday for the West Indies , where they purpose making a stay of some weeks . The Duke and Duchess of Connaught , who have been residing at Osborne since Christmas , have taken up their residence at Government House , Portsmouth , the official headquarters of the General Commanding the Southern District .

Bro . the Earl of Leversham left Mirchorell , near Keswick , on Monday , for Duncombe Park for the purpose of laying the first stone the day following of the new residence he purposes erecting in place of the handsome mansion which was almost entirely burnt to the ground some nine years ag-o .

Bro . Lord Greville , who some time ago vvas bitten by a favourite dog , which was afterwards shown to be suffering from rabies , and at once placed himself under M . Bro . Lord Stalybridge , who will shortly succeed Sir Richard Moon as chairman of the London and North-Western Railway Company , dined vvith Mr . 0 . L . Stephen , at Stuart House , Cadogan-square , on Tuesday , a number of gentlemen interested in or connected with railway management being invited to meet his lordship .

On the occasion of the Queen's visit to Portsmouth on Thursday next , the 26 th instant , for the purpose of launching the Royal Sovereign , battleship , and the Royal Arthur , cruiser , about 50 , 000 of the public vvill be admitted within the dockyard , of whom some Sooo vvill be provided vvith places inside the enclosure .

An eminent distiller has been making experiments upon a pair of monkeys vvith new and old whiskey . No . 1 monkey was made drunk vvith new whiskey and proved quarrelsome , while No . 2 vvas reduced to the same state by old whiskey and vvas quite hilarious . On their becoming sober , the experiments were reversed with precisely the same results , No . 1 , who vvas made drunk vvith old whiskey , becoming

hilarious , while No . 2 proved quarrelsome under the influence of the new . Musuras Pasha , who was formerly Turkish Ambassador in London , died at Constantinople on the 12 th inst ., at the ripe age of 84 yeirs . The deceased began his public life

under the Prince of Samos . In 1 S 47 he was appointed Turkish Minister at Athens , and vvas transferred the year following in a similar capacity to Vienna . In 1 S 51 he quitted the Austrian capital for London , where he continued to represent the Sultan till 1 SS 5 , when he retired from service altogether .

Bro . James Stevens' interesting lecture on "The Ritual and Ceremonial of the Symbolic Degrees in Freemasonry " is now becoming knovvn and recognised as a valuable means of instruction , as also of entertainment , in Masonic lodges . VVe have received an announcement of its intended delivery in the Rosslyn Lodge , No . 1543 , at Dunmow , Essex , on

Wednesday next , the 25 th inst ., and this we learn vvill be the 60 th occasion of its delivery . The Devon brethren are to have opportunities for hearing this latest lecture , as arrangements are being made for Bro . Stevens' visit to Plymouth in March , and from there he vvill fulfil engagements with lodges in other towns in that province .

This is Sir Edward Watkin ' s explanation of the " present stage of the business " in connection vvith the erection ofthe Watkin Tower : " We have secured 250 acres of land at Wembley Park , on the Metropolitan line , and we have engaged the services of Mr . Milner , the well-known landscape gardener , to lay it out , and Sir Benjamin Baker is busy preparing for the foundations of the tower . When this has

been done—probably about May—we shall issue a prospectus , and raise the necessary capital . We have raised ^ . 70 , 000 among just a few of ourselves . That is sufficient for present purposes . When the time conies for beginning the actual tower we shall raise further capital , lt may be £ 200 , 000 or £ 250 , 000 . BRO . G . H . PKRRKTT , 1222 . —The remains of this

promising young tradesman and resident of Weston-super-Mare were consigned to their resting-place in the cemetery on Monday afternoon , amid every token of respect , the majority of the places of business en route being either partially or entirely closed during the hour of interment . The cortege left the residence of the deceased at 2 . 30 in the following order * . The officers and brethren of St . Kew

Lodge , No . 1222 ( about 40 ) , Capt . Whitting , Lieut . Whitting , and Lieut . Duckworth , and about 40 members of the B Company 3 rd Battalion P . A . S . L . L , the Volunteer Fire Brigade , the Town Commissioners , the Town Clerk , surveyor , and other officials . An open hearse contained the coffin , covered vvith lloral emblems of respect and esteem from public bodies , relatives , and private friends . The

mourning carriages contained the father and brothers ofthe deceased and other relatives . The other carriages that followed were those of Dr . Wicksteed , Mr . H . Pethick , and others . The rear vvas brought up with a number of tradesmen and a goodly representation of the Foresters' Courts . I he service at the cemetery was taken by the rector , and at

the graveside a large number of spectators assembled to witness the solemn ceremony , at the close of which the Masonic brethren deposited their sprays of acacia in the open grave . There were in all 32 wreaths sent , some of them comprising beautiful specimens of early spring flowers ,

Her Majesty has been graciously pleased to give instruc . tions for the opening to the public on Saturdays and Sundays of the riverside promenade at the Tower of London so soon as the necessary arrangements can be made . We regret to hear that Viscount Dangan , the eldest son of Bro . Earl Cowley , has been confined to his bed at Draycot House , his father ' s seat in Wiltshire , by a severe attack of measles .

I he Holborn Choral Society is announced to give the first concert of the seventh season under the conductorship of Bro . J . T . Hutchinson and Mr . J . Francis Bannett ( who vvill conduct his own work ); at the Holborn Town Hall on Tuesday next .

A new lodge , " The Hardwick , " vvas consecrated at Chesterfield on Wednesday last , the iSth instant . In the absence of the Prov . Grand Master of Derbyshire , the Marquis of Hartington , the ceremony was performed by the Deputy Prov . G . M ., Bro . H . C . Okeover . On Wednesday evening , the 4 th inst ., Bro . Samuel

Bettoney , of Maryport , died at his residence there after a short illness . He went to Maryport in 1863 , and has carried on business as a photographer up to his death . He was well known in the sporting world as a contributor of sporting news , and for many years he was flag steward at Gosforth Park and other meetings . He vvas about 54 years of age and leaves a widow and a grown-up family .

Bro . W . A . Baskcomb gave an entertainment of songs and readings at the Parochial Hall , Villa-street , Walworth , on Wednesday , the iSth inst ., in connection vvith the Walworth Habitation of the Primrose League . Bro . Baskcomb announces himself on the programme as an "amateur , " a very necessary bit of information to the public , who would otherwise be slow in recognising him as such after a taste of his professional capability .

On Thursday evening , the 5 th inst ., a Masonic ball , which proved one of the happiest gatherings under the auspices of the Freemasons of Crovvle , took place in the Market Hall . There vvas a select and good company present , the greater number of whom were visitors . A well-arranged programme vvas excellently performed by Gregory's Quadrille Band , the latest music being given . At midnight a neatlyprovided and excellent supper vvas well served to nearly 70 guests . The surplus proceeds are for the Charities .

Burton Newbold , Sec . of No . 312 , writes : " I notice in the column devoted to Masonic and General Tidings in your issue of the 14 th inst . the very interesting account of the presentation to Bro . Hall , P . M . 529 . You therein state that Bro . Hall ' is probably the oldest Freemason in the

whole of Yorkshire . ' It may possibly be of interest to you to learn that we have a brother belonging to the lodge in this town , Lion Lodge , No . 312 , who vvas initiated in the lodge on the iSth February , 1 S 39 . ^ * i Weighill , to whom I refer , is therefore , vvith the exception of a very few days , two years the senior of Bro . A grand Masonic ball in connection with the Salem Lodge , No . 1443 , to commemorate the founding of the Masonic Hall , Dawlish , and in aid of the building fund , was held at the Royal Assembly Rooms , Dawlish , on Tuesday evening , the ioth inst . handsomely decorated with bunting , nags , and plants of every description , and the scene presented in the various dances was one of the most brilliant description . Bro . VV . Southwood , the Hon . A ball , promoted by the Hadrian and St . Hilda Lodges was held in the New Royal Assembly Hall , South Shields , on the ioth inst . lt vvas attended by about 400 persons , including the leading Freemasons of Northumberland and Durham . Many ot those present were in fancy costumes , and when dancing commenced at eight o ' clock , the new hall , which vvas found admirably adapted for such a

The Countess of Lathom , vvith two of her daughters , the Ladies Alice and Edith Wilbraham , left England on Wednesday for the West Indies , where they purpose making a stay of some weeks . The Duke and Duchess of Connaught , who have been residing at Osborne since Christmas , have taken up their residence at Government House , Portsmouth , the official headquarters of the General Commanding the Southern District .

Bro . the Earl of Leversham left Mirchorell , near Keswick , on Monday , for Duncombe Park for the purpose of laying the first stone the day following of the new residence he purposes erecting in place of the handsome mansion which was almost entirely burnt to the ground some nine years ag-o .

An eminent distiller has been making experiments upon a pair of monkeys vvith new and old whiskey . No . 1 monkey was made drunk vvith new whiskey and proved quarrelsome , while No . 2 vvas reduced to the same state by old whiskey and vvas quite hilarious . On their becoming sober , the experiments were reversed with precisely the same results , No . 1 , who vvas made drunk vvith old whiskey , becoming

hilarious , while No . 2 proved quarrelsome under the influence of the new . Musuras Pasha , who was formerly Turkish Ambassador in London , died at Constantinople on the 12 th inst ., at the ripe age of 84 yeirs . The deceased began his public life

under the Prince of Samos . In 1 S 47 he was appointed Turkish Minister at Athens , and vvas transferred the year following in a similar capacity to Vienna . In 1 S 51 he quitted the Austrian capital for London , where he continued to represent the Sultan till 1 SS 5 , when he retired from service altogether .

This is Sir Edward Watkin ' s explanation of the " present stage of the business " in connection vvith the erection ofthe Watkin Tower : " We have secured 250 acres of land at Wembley Park , on the Metropolitan line , and we have engaged the services of Mr . Milner , the well-known landscape gardener , to lay it out , and Sir Benjamin Baker is busy preparing for the foundations of the tower . When this has

Bettoney , of Maryport , died at his residence there after a short illness . He went to Maryport in 1863 , and has carried on business as a photographer up to his death . He was well known in the sporting world as a contributor of sporting news , and for many years he was flag steward at Gosforth Park and other meetings . He vvas about 54 years of age and leaves a widow and a grown-up family .

Bro . W . A . Baskcomb gave an entertainment of songs and readings at the Parochial Hall , Villa-street , Walworth , on Wednesday , the iSth inst ., in connection vvith the Walworth Habitation of the Primrose League . Bro . Baskcomb announces himself on the programme as an "amateur , " a very necessary bit of information to the public , who would otherwise be slow in recognising him as such after a taste of his professional capability .

On Thursday evening , the 5 th inst ., a Masonic ball , which proved one of the happiest gatherings under the auspices of the Freemasons of Crovvle , took place in the Market Hall . There vvas a select and good company present , the greater number of whom were visitors . A well-arranged programme vvas excellently performed by Gregory's Quadrille Band , the latest music being given . At midnight a neatlyprovided and excellent supper vvas well served to nearly 70 guests . The surplus proceeds are for the Charities .

Burton Newbold , Sec . of No . 312 , writes : " I notice in the column devoted to Masonic and General Tidings in your issue of the 14 th inst . the very interesting account of the presentation to Bro .
