SATURDAY FEBRUARY 21 , 1891 . . + We understand that his Royal Highness the Prince of Wales has fixed Thursday , the 12 th prox ., as the date to attend , accompanied by her Royal Highness the Princess of Wales , to open the Centenary Hall of the Royal Masonic Institution for Girls , Battersea Rise .

We are g lad to find that Bro . Terry has made still further progress with his Board of Stewards for Wednesday next , and that since Saturday last a net addition has been made of 12 brethren , raising the total number of Stewards to 312 . Between now and

Wednesday a few more brethren may volunteer their services , so that this year ' s Board will not be far short of what it was last year . We understand that Kent , the Chairman ' s province , is very strongly represented , so that we may look to its making an exceptionall y good return .

* * * We would call attention to the advertisement announcing that the annual meeting of the Grand Conclave of the Red Cross of Constantine , & c , will be held at the Mark Masons' Hall on Monday , the and prox .,

at S o ' clock , and that the Grand Sovereign , Sir Francis Burdett , Bart ., purposes presiding at it , and also at the banquet to follow . This interesting Order deserves

* * * In another column we g ive an account of the annual meeting of the Leeds Masonic Educational and Benevolent Institution , which must be interesting reading to all Masons . It shows what can be done in

a town when all the brethren unite to carry on a good work . At one time it was feared by some more timid Masons that this local effort would interfere seriousl y with the contributions to our central Masonic Charities in London . So far , however , from this being the case

it has stimulated the charitable to greater efforts , and this year ' s contributions to the central Charities will bear favourable comparison with those of previous years , and this notwithstanding the fact that a special effort had been made on behalf of the local Charity ,

which has been crowned with signal success . It should also be mentioned that the Leeds brethren have another Charity , to which each of the eig ht lodges contributes Pro rata . This fund is to relieve travelling Masons , if found worthy , and has been of inestimable service .

The Earl of Jersey , we are p leased to note , has had a fraternal reception at the hands of the Masons in Melbourne , and an address tendering him a hearty welcome to the greater Britain of the South was

presented to his lordship from the Combermere Lodge , No . 75 2 , the onl y existing Masonic lodge under the English Constitution in the Colony of Victoria . 7 P -fl" * * 7 r

Bro . Alexander G . Abell , of San Francisco , who has been Grand Secretary of the Grand Lodge of California for 35 years , was prevented b y serious illness from attending the 41 st Annual Communication in October last , and has since died , to thc deep regret of the brethren

of that flourishing jurisdiction . His annual report , which was read by the Assistant Grand Secretary , began with the following words : "The undersigned presents his 35 th and probably last annual report to

the Grand Lodge . " The foreboding has been realised , and the 35 th has proved to be the last report presented b y this able and experienced Grand Secretary , who had held that important office only a few years less than the Grand Lodge itself had been in existence .

We have spoken of California as being a flourishing jurisdiction , and the description is certainly justified b y the following statistics : The lodges on the roll are 242 in number , and the subscribing members 15 , 93 :. The

Grand Lodge receipts during the past year amounted to close on § 25 , 500 , the General Fund exceeded § 29 , 400 , and the expenditure was about § 25 , 300 , while the sum invested is § 74 , 000 . * * #

But what impresses us most favourabl y in regard to Calfornian Masonry is the large sum expended by the various Masonic Boards of Relief , that of San Francisco , which heads the list , showing receipts to the amount of $ 12 , 7 67 , and expenditure § 12 , 2 39 , the totals

received and expended from 1856 to 1890 being § 2 76 , 45 0 (; £ 55 . 9 ° ) and § 275 , 922 ( £ 55 , 184 ) respectively . The Los Angelas Board stands next to that of San Francisco for the year 1890 , its receipts amounting to § 23 79 and its expenditure to § 2233 dollars . At

this Annual Communication Grand Lodge appropriated $ 7450 ( £ 1490 ) to the various Masonic Boards of Relief , while the question of establishing a Masonic Home is under consideration , a report in favour of its establishment being submitted at this session .

* * * We learn from the table which Bro . Josiah H . Drummond , of Maine , is in the habit of compiling annually that last year there were in North America 157 , 808 Royal Arch Masons , the number exalted

during the said period being 11 , 53 2 . These figures comprise the Royal Arch Masons in Canada ( Province of Ontario ) , Nova Scotia , New Brunswick , and Quebec , ** s well as those ranged under 42 Grand Chapters in the

United States . However , the number on British territory is under 5000 , while those in the United States muster 152 , 97 2 . * * *

The strongest jurisdictions are those of New York , with 15 , 646 members ; Illinois , with 13 , 106 members ; Pennsylvania , with 12 , 4 6 7 members ; Ohio , with 11 , 432 members ; and Massachusetts , with 10 , 722 members . The Grand Chapters of Indiana , Iowa , Michigan , and

Missouri have each of them upwards of 5000 , but less than 10 , 000 subscribing Royal Arch Masons , and there 22 other jurisdictions in the United States , and that of Canada ( Province of Ontario ) , with upwards of 1000 but less than 5000 members . The remaining n Grand

Chapters , United States America , and Quebec , Nova Scotia and New Brunswick have each of them less than 1000 members , the smallest being that of New

Brunswick , with 33 8 members , and the three immediately above are those of Nevada , with 353 members ; North Dakota , with 355 members ; and Delaware , with 357 members .
