Brethren , You arc particularly requested to attend the next meeting of the General Committee of this Institution at Freemasons' Hall , on Thursday , the 2 Cth inst ., between the hours of four and five o ' clock p . 111 ., to support the reelection of the present I louse Committee . It may be within your recollection that Bro . Thomas Massa , who some years since was employed in the capacity of architect in connection with certain additions to the main building of the School , took occasion , at the last Ouarterly Court , lo submit a proposition for the rebuilding of the very excellent and substantial house recently acquired , occupied as the Junior School , and formerly known as Lyncombe House . The House Committee most strongly opposed this proposition , and were supported in their views by the Ouarterly Court , who , considering the existing building fully adequate to the present requirements of the Institution , negatived Bro . Massa's motion by an overwhelming majority . Bro . Massa has , however , availed himself of the present opportunity to nominate five brethren , one of whom was tlie seconder of his motion , in opposition to the reelection of the present Committee . Two , at least , of the brethren so nominated were proposed by Bro . Massa without their knowledge or consent , and have requested that their names be withdrawn , but as there still remain more than one of the candidates so proposed whose names have not to our knowledge been formally withdrawn , the Committee are sorry to be under the necessity of asking the favour of your attending the meeting on the 2 ( Jth inst ., and giving them unitedly your vote and support . THE BANNERS OF FREEMASONRY . To the Editor of the "Freemason . " Dear Sir and Brother , — Will you kindly give me the opportunity for ascertaining from some higher authority than either the friend from whom I differ or myself , the correct expression to be used in the exhortation to the newly-admitted Mason on the

subject of Charity ? For nearly a quarter of a century I have believed that the sentence " Amongst those who range under its banners " was correct , but I have been lately told that it is not so , "for Freemasonry has but one banner . " As this information was conveyed to me in a lodge of instruction , from which , of course , the error , if it be an error , will be disseminated , it may be of interest to raise the question whether or not our former teachers understood what

they taught . Several works confirm me in that rendering of the pas sage to which I have been accustomed , viz ., in the plural . Amongst these are "The Ceremonies as taught in the Union ' s Emulation Lodge of Improvement for M . M . ' s , " published 1 S 71 , and " Mackey ' s Lexicon , " 1 SG 7 . In the

latter work will be found the following : In symbolic Masonry six banners are generally borne in procession , on each of which is inscribed one of the following words Faith , Hope , Charity , Wisdom , Strength , Beauty . " I fancy my friend is misled by the impression that the

standard of the Grand Lodge of England is the representative banner of Freemasonry . But that cannot be , for other Grand Lodges have their respective distinguishing ensigns . And I contend that the banners referred to in our ritual are the allegorical symbols of Masonry universal , and have no connection of idea with any separate

ANOTHER OLD CONSTITUTION IN EXISTENCE . To the Editor of the "Freemason . " Dear Sir and Brother , — Mr . Halliwell begins the introduction to the old Masonic poem known as the " Halliwell MS . " as follows : "God alone is gracious and powerful . Thanks to our

gracious God , rather of heaven and earth , and all things that in them are , that he has vouchsafed to give power unto men . " To which Mr . Halliwell adds , " So commences one of the ancient Constitutions of Masonry . " As , to the best of my recollection , I have never seen an old Masonic Constitution beginning with the prayer , or ,

rather , say , with the above thanksgiving , will you , therefore , please to inform me where I can find that Constitution , and , if you know not where it is , will you oblige me by asking Mr . Halliwell where the said Constitution may be seen , and if you are successful in your inquiry , please to print it . It is an important document , if only for

The first is in the issue of Nov . 27 th , 1 SS 0 , and the second is in that of the 7 th inst ., my replies being in your issue of Dec . nth , 1 SS 0 , and of the 14 th inst ., respectively . Bro . Wade in his first letter speaks of " a Bro . Lewis , I think . " In his second letter he is more explicit , and speaks of " Bro . Lewis , an officer of Grand Conclave , " as having

had certain correspondence handed to him after it had reached England for the second time . The statement is clearly made in each letter by Bro . Wade himself . I never having had any knowledge of this particular correspondence from N . Z ., can only quote Bro . Wade ' s own words for Bro . Lewis's information , and if he is quite sure that he is the Bro . Lewis referred to , as being

A CURIOUS MASONIC TRACT . Brethren interested in the subject and study of Masonic bibliography and history will do well to consult the "Masonic Magazine" for May . Beside other attractions , it contains a reprint of what is fairly entitled " A Curious Masonic Tract . " In the interesting notes by the Editor , it is stated that the pamphlet is not in Dr . Kloss ' s

"Bibliographic der Freemaurerei . " This is an error , as it is given at page 132 , under the department of Rituals , and is numbered iSSC . Kloss gives the second edition only , just as the one alluded to , and reprinted by the Editor for the information of the Craft generally . Brethren having aught curious or old , Masonically , should report in the "Notes and Queries" department , and have their possessions properly explained and treated , & c , if needs be . ¦ ¦ W . J . Matthew Shuttleworth , as I have stumbled upon a note in one of my museum-books , which gives the name somewhat differently , and at this lapse of time I cannot say which is right . The returns received from the Stewards , in reply to a circular asking for their opinion as to the place of meetings , were as follows : In favour of Crystal Palace , 24 ; Alexandra Palace , 22 ; Royal

Pavilion , Brighton , 05 ; indifferent , 5 ; unfavourable to Brighton , G ; total 122 . It was then proposed and seconded , " That the Alexandra Palace be selected " and " That the Pavilion at Brighton be selected . " On a division , there were for Alexandra Palace , 7 ; Brighton , 19 . It was then resolved that the festival be held at the Royal Pavilion , Brighton .

Bro . SAYERS ( Messrs . Sayers and Marks ) was in attendance , and submitted the menu , list of prices , & c , which were approved . It was resolved that the price of the dinner tickets be , including first-class return railway fare , brethren , £ 1 is . ; ladies , iSs . ; double ticket , £ 1 ids . Exclusive of railway fare the tickets to be , brethren , 17 s . fid . ; ladies , 15 s . A

special train will be provided . The musical arrangements were entrusted to a sub-committee , consisting of Bros . Edgar Bowyer , J . Bellerby , J . L . Mather , Dr . Scheimann , with the ollicers of the Board ex-officin . It was announced that the annual fete , distribution of prizes , and visit of the Stewards to the Institution will probably take place on Wednesday , the 22 nd June .

Lodge Of Benevolence.

The monthly meeting of the Lodge of Benevolence , and the quarterly meeting of the Board of Masters were held on Wednesday evening at Freemasons' Hall . Bro . J . M . Clabon presided . Bro . Joshua Nunn occupied the Senior Vice-President's chair , and Bro . James Brett the chair of

Junior Vice-President . At the Board of Masters the agenda paper for next Grand Lodge was settled . The brethren then confirmed recommendations of grants made at last meeting of the lodge , to the amount of £ 365 . There were thirty new cases on the list . The total amount granted was £ l ( m .
