West Lancashire Masonic Charities.

WEST LANCASHIRE MASONIC CHARITIES .

A meeting of the Charity Committee of the Provincial Grand Lodge of West Lancashire , which was very numerously attended , took place on Friday , the 13 th inst ., at the Masonic Hall , Hope-street , under the presidency of Bro . R . Wylie . Recommendations for grants from the P . G . Lodge Fund of Benevolence , to the amount of about £ 70 , for distressed brethren and widows of deceased Freemasons ,

were adopted , and the votes of the province for candidates at the forthcoming Charity Elections were also arranged . A report as to the position of the London Royal Masonic Institution for Boys was given by a representative , and it was unanimously agreed that a sum not exceeding ^ 200 should be suggested to the

brethren at the approaching annual P . G . Lodge meeting as the retiring allowance of Bro . Binckes , the Secretary of the Boys' Institution . A most interesting and exhaustive synopsis of the Masonic Charities of West Lancashire was submitted by Bro . J . H . Tyson , P . M . 1182 , the full text of which appeared in our last issue .

Laying The Memorial Stone Of The Stromness New Masonic Hall.

LAYING THE MEMORIAL STONE OF THE STROMNESS NEW MASONIC HALL .

The memorial-stone of the new Masonic Hall , at present in course of erection , in Stromness , was laid on the 16 th instant by Bro . Sheriff Thomas , P . G . M . of Caithness , Orkney , and Zetland , assisted by the full Provincial Grand Lodge and the local lodges in the province . There was a good turn-out of brethren , as also a great

number of the general public . Considerable interest was attached to the proceedings , the ceremony being such an unusual one in the burgh . The Provincial Grand Lodge met in the Town Hall , and from thence the procession , headed by the volunteer band and the volunteers , marched through the town to

the site of the building , when the interesting ceremony was performed . The P . G . M . used on the occasion a handsome silver trowel , bearing a suitable inscription , which was presenled to him by the Master of the Stromness lodge .

The new lodge stands midway between the National and Commercial Banks , fronting the new pier , and will form quite a striking feature in the architecture of the town . The building , which is to be of two storeys , will contain public offices on the ground floor , the hall , with adjoining rooms , forming the upper floor .

New Masonic Works.

NEW MASONIC WORKS .

Two important works on Freemasonry are now preparing for publication , and are likely to be ready early in October . Each is of special value in its particular department , and both will doubtless have such a speedy sale that only those who place their orders early will succeed in securing copies . The publisher of both volumes is Bro . George Kenning , 16 , Great

Queenstreet . Bro . Hughan's ninth work ( being one of the two before noted ) is to be entitled "Historical Sketch of the 'Apollo ' Lodge , York , in Relation to Craft and Royal Arch Masonry , with Brief Notices of its Local Predecessors and Contemporaries" and will be published

at 5 s . each , post free to subscribers . The volume will be divided into five chapters—as follows : 1 , Freemasonry at York , 1705-1792 ; 2 , the Apollo Lodge , York , 1773-7 ; 3 , the Apollo Lodge , York , 1777-1805 ; 4 , Royal Arch Masonry , 1744-1830 ; 5 , the Phcenix Lodge , Hull , 1817-35 . The frontispiece will be an

excellent reproduction of Cave's engraving of the old " George Hotel , " at which the " Apollo " meetings were originally held , but the building was , unhappily , demolished recently , though one of most attractive appearance and historic importance . The Right Hon . the Earl of Zetland ( Prov . G . M . North and East Yorkshire )

consents to accept the dedication , whilst the Prov . G . Secretary of that province and other local Masonic celebrities are warmly co-operating with Bro . Hughan to render the history as complete and accurate as possible . The only regret we have heard expressed in reference to the matter is the smallness of the edition .

Bro . John Lane ' s second venture , like his first great work , will have reference to the lodges on the English roll , and will doubtless prove as useful and indispensable as his "' Masonic Records , 1717-1886 . " As with that massive volume , so with the new book , there has been , and there is , no rival , and we think we may promise

there never will be , as Bro . Lane does his work so thoroughly , accurately , and comprehensively . The great merits of the present undertaking is its originality , being from first to last his own compilation , and will occupy ground hitherto untouched . The following is the title-page :

New Masonic Works.

" A handy book to the study of the engraved , printed , and manuscript lists of lodges of Ancient Free and Accepted Masons of England ( " Moderns " and " Ancients " ) from 1723 to 1814 , with an appendix and valuable statistical tables , by John Lane , F . C . A ., P . M . 1402 , Past Senior Grand Warden of Iowa , Past

Provincial Grand Registrar of Devonshire , & c , & c , & c , author of ' Masonic Records , 1717-1886 , " ' Masters ' Lodges , ' & c , & c . London : George Kenning , 16 , Great Queen-street . 188 9 . " We are very pleased to state that our Brother Lane has decided to dedicate the volume to the " R . W . Bro .

William James Hughan , the Masonic Historian , of Torquay , England , " who has done so much to foster the class of studies in which , of late years , Bro . John Lane has proved to be facile princeps . This work will consist of about 200 pages demy 8 vo . bound in blue cloth , and will contain an account of the

different manuscript , engraved , and printed lists of lodges that have appeared from 1723 to 1814 , together with statistical tables specially compiled to show the number of new lodges and of lodges erased , year by year , as well as the total number of London , country , and Foreign lodges ( English Registry ) in existence at the close of every year from 1728 to the present time

( 1888 ) , also a facsimile of Benjamin Cole ' s unique title page and frontispiece of 1767 . To which will be appended copies ( not in facsimile ) of the Grand Lodge manuscript lists ( Moderns ) of 1723-24 , 1725-28 , and 1731-32 ; the engraved lists of 1724 , 1725 ( two editions ) , and 1729 ; the lists from Prichard , 1730 , Rawlinson , 1733 , and Picard , 1735 ; and the manuscript lists ( Ancients ) of 1751-52 , 1752-54 , and

1755-57-Copies may be had from the author ( Torquay ) at 7 s . ( 5 d . each , post free to subscribers ; or 12 s . 6 d . may be sent to either Bro . Hughan or Bro . Lane ( Torquay , Devonshire ) for one of each work , which will be sent

immediately on publication , and be supplied , as far as possible , in order of application . As they are entirely new works , and are , also , of much Masonic and critical value , we anticipate a speedy sale , both editions being very limited in character , making together but 700 copies in all .

The Encroachments On The Girls' School Property.

THE ENCROACHMENTS ON THE GIRLS' SCHOOL PROPERTY .

The motion in the action of Lord Lei gh and others 1 ; . the Vestry of St . Mary , Battersea , was in the list of cases for hearing before the Vacation Judge ( Mr . Justice Denman ) on Wednesday , but Mr . Wilkinson , who appeared as counsel for the plaintiffs , asked to relieve his

lordship ' s paper of the case for that day , as it had been arranged , subject to his lordship ' s sanction and pending negotiations for a settlement , that it should stand over till next Wednesday . He therefore asked that it should stand for a week , for which he had the consent in writing of the defendants . Mr . Justice Denman assented .

Pleasing Masonic Recognition.

PLEASING MASONIC RECOGNITION .

Bro . John M . King , the Master of the Prince ' s Landing-stage , Liverpool , has just been the reci pient of a pleasing form of gift from the members of one of the New York lodges . During his connection with the Evertcn Lodge , Bro . King ' s attention was drawn to the fact that the Mariners Lodge of New York was

collecting funds for the erection of a temple or Masonic hall of their own , and he was instrumental in raising subscriptions from the mariner members of the Everton Lodge and other brethren towards this fund . The result of the movement was that not only was sufficient

money forthcoming for the purpose , but a balance of over some three quarters of a million of dollars remains , with which the brethren of the New York lodge now propose to endow schools for Freemasons' orphans and also establish a fund for the benefit of Masons ' widows and destitute members of the Craft . In the

meantime , to commemorate this good work , a medal has been struck off for presentation to the founders of this excellent Charity , and so heartil y has Bro . King ' s services to the movement been appreciated by the

Mariners Lodge on the other side of the Atlantic that the officers unanimously voted him one of the founders ' medals , which has just been forwarded to him from New York , together with a copy of the proceedings of the lodge and a letter from the office-bearers .

Colonel North's New Palace.

COLONEL NORTH'S NEW PALACE .

T he British Architect gives the following description of Bro . Col . North ' s new house : " Colonel North ' s Italian palace is rising rapidly on the wooded slope , commanding a superb view of the Chislehurst valley . Three months hence the splendours of Avery Hill will ( remarks a writer in the

World ) probably cause almost as much sensation as Fonthill Abbey did in the days of our forefathers . The picture gallery is a hundred feet long by fifty broad . At one end is a lofty vestibule to be filled with sculpture , and at the other a marble musicians' gallery , supported by columns of Mexican onyx . The walls are

nearl y forty feet high . Mr . Thomas Cutler , the architect , has devised an entirely novel system of li ghting ; and in addition to the famous Italian pictures which are now in Manchester , Colonel North has recently purchased the 'Last of the Buffaloes ' and the 'Silver King' ( two paintings of enormous size ) , as well as Mr , Frederick Goodall ' s

number of the general public .

" A handy book to the study of the engraved , printed , and manuscript lists of lodges of Ancient Free and Accepted Masons of England ( " Moderns " and " Ancients " ) from 1723 to 1814 , with an appendix and valuable statistical tables , by John Lane , F . C . A ., P . M . 1402 , Past Senior Grand Warden of Iowa , Past

( 1888 ) , also a facsimile of Benjamin Cole ' s unique title page and frontispiece of 1767 . immediately on publication , and be supplied , as far as possible , in order of application .
