Masonic Notes .

All who have watched the progress of " Lodge La France " will be gratified to learn that the formation of a chapter in connection with this very successful lodge is now an accomplished fact , or rather it will be on the 21 st prox ., when the consecration is announced to take

place at the "Temple Maconnique , " Cafe Royal , Regent-street . It will not surprise our readers to learn that Comp . T . Fenn has undertaken to perform the ceremony , which will , of course , be in French . His masterly rendering of the lodge ceremonies will long

be remembered , and those who are acquainted with Bro . Fenn ' s ability and indomitable perseverance in all he undertakes , will not be surprised at finding

him equally successful in the ritual of the Royal Arch . Bros . E . Monteuuis , Henri Bue , and Ernest St . Clair are to be the First , Second , and Third Principals respectively .

The George Price Lodge , No . 2096 , which meets in the summer months from April to August , appears not to be able to get through its business in the allotted

season , to judge from the notice just issued for a lodge of emergency on Saturday next , for the purpose of initiating three candidates ; an unmistakable sign of vitality .

The announcement we made last week that Bro Gerard Ford had met with a severe accident , cannot , we regret to say , be followed b y a very cheering account of his progress towards recovery . On the contrary , a relapse has taken place , and , although we trust it is not

very serious , it is sufficient to cause some anxiet 3 ' . Bro . Ford , while being strict and firm as a ruler , is one of the most genial and courteous of Masons , and he can be ill spared even temporally from the province in which he exercises so great an influence for good .

* * * As a consequence of Bro . Ford ' s enforced absence from the province , the Moveable Grand Mark Lodge , which was to have been held at Brighton on Friday , 27 th inst ., mainly for the purpose of his installation as Grand Superintendent of Sussex , is postponed until his return . * * * The World " regrets to hear of the very serious illness of Bro . tineas Maclntyre . Since he accepted the county court judgeship of Huddersfield and Halifax , the once familiar figure of " Mac " has been missed at

the Law Courts , while Freemasons have lamented the absence of their Past Grand Registrar . Bro . Maclntyre lives at Mirfield , a very pretty place near Huddersfield , and one of the best known London physicians was

summoned there to see him last week . " We would add our expressions of sincere regret to those of our contemporary , and a hope that we shall be able to announce an improvement in our brother ' s condition next week .

Bro . Gould , the author of History of Freemasonry , " "The Atholl Lodges , " "The Four Old Lodges , " and many other valuable contributions to Masonic literature since the year 1 S 58 , has promised to deliver a lecture on the "Antiquity of the Craft

Masonic Notes.

Degrees and their relationship to the Royal Arch , with especial reference to Scotland , " on Monday , the 30 th inst ., to the members and friends of the Glasgow R . A . Chapter , No . 50 , Glasgow . Bro . Edward Macbean , Prov . Grand Treasurer of Glasgow , is the

esteemed Z ., and has alread y done his part in this direction ; Bro . Hughan , of Torquay , also giving a lecture in the same city last summer . A large attendance is confidently anticipated , and we hope and believe the reception will prove how much Bro . Gould is respected for his devotion to the Craft .

A writer in the Sussex Daily News contributes a column of Masonic history to its pages in the issue of the 12 th inst ., the immediate cause of his effort being the recent celebration of the centenary of the Royal Clarence Lodge , at Brighton , which is the first lod ? e

intheprovincewhichhas had that privilege . Bro . Thomas Francis ' s " History of Freemasonry in Sussex " has been largely brought into requisition , but the writer has made some additions which brings the record up to date , and which will be found useful and interesting to those who take an interest in local Masonic history .

The Craft in Victoria appear to be settling themselves down in a business-like manner to carry out the necessary arrangements resulting from the change that has taken place in the colony , owing to the establishment of the United Grand Lodge . The Board of

General Purposes met on the 25 th July last , when some important business was got through , while the Board of Benevolence met on the 10 th and 24 th of the same month , and relieved , at the former meeting , nine , and at the latter eleven cases which were brought to their notice .

On the 15 th July a Special Convocation of Grand Chapter was held , under the presidency of Comp . Sir W . J . Clarke , Bart ., Grand Z ., when a Committee of General Purposes was formed , and authority was

given to it to send a circular to the various Grand Chapters praying for recognition , to draw up a form of foundation warrant , and to prepare a scale of fees and salaries , & c , & c , & c .

The 22 nd annual meeting of the Subscribers to the Masonic Charitable Institutions was held at Free masons' Hall , Melbourne , in July , under the presidency of Bro . Sir W . J . Clarke , Bart ., M . W . G . M . The report of the Committee of Management , which was submitted

and after some discussion adopted , showed that the funds amount now to £ 795 2 s . 9 d ., of which . £ 665 7 s . is on fixed deposit , and £ i 2 g 15 s . 7 d . in bank . One of the inmates of the Institution had died , and the Committee recommended that Bro . Dr . Joske , who

had rendered valuable service by attending him and other cases , should be appointed an honorary physician , in addition to the two on whom that distinction had already been conferred . * * *

One item in the report deserves special attention . A certain Bro . William Bell , of Narrandera , had presented the sum of ^ 100 to the Institution on the condition that "should he require admission as an inmate

after the lapse of six years from this date , that he be so admitted . " The Committee reported that they had accepted the donation on the understanding specified , and their acceptance has now been confirmed .

* * * The Australasian Keystone for the month of August contains a series of brief biographical sketches of "Some Prominent Masons , " the most prominent , who very naturally heads the list , being Bro . the Hon . George

S . Coppin , Past Grand Master of the late Grand Lodge of Victoria , who now holds similar rank under the new Constitution . From this we learn that Bro . Coppin was initiated in March , 1845 , at Launceston , Tasmania , in St . John ' s Lodge , No . 346 , Irish Constitution . In the

same year he visited Melbourne , and became W . M . ol the Australia Felix Lodge of Hiram , No . 349 , I . C . Subsequently he removed to South Australia , and resuscitated the Adelaide Lodge , No . 341 , S . C . In 18 ^ 2 he returned to Victoria , and the year following

assisted in founding the United Tradesmen s Lodge , No . 3 66 , S . C , Geelong , and on the 27 th December , 1 S 53 , was presented by his lodge with a P . M . ' s jewel , of colonial gold , set with precious stones , of the value of X 105 . On the 27 th April , 18 S 3 , he was elected , and

on the 2 nd July following was installed , first Grand Master of the Grand Lodge of Victoria . He was reelected a second and a third time , and on ultimately retiring from office was presented with his portrait in full regalia and sundry handsome jewels . This is an excellent record of service .
