The temple of Cyrus was much beautified bv Herod as a concession to the Jews , and was finall y destroyed b y the Romans under Titus , who , however , personall y made every effort to save

it . The statement in Haggai that the glory of the latter house should exceed that of the former does not refer , as some think , to the superior ornamentation , but to the fact that it was in the second temple that our Saviour was presented .

THE MASONIC GUIDE OF SOUTH AUSTRALIA FOR 1901-2 .

This admirable annual is compiled b y the R . W . Bro . Phili p Sansom , Past D . G . M ., and Grand Treasurer , and is published under the patronage of the M . W , Bro . the Ri g ht lion . Sir Samuel James Way , Bart ., Chief Justice of South Australia , & c . The accomplished editor has discharged the onerous duties

of that office on similar lines to that of last year ' s issue , the onl y extra feature 1 have detected being two pages devoted to the " Quatuor Coronati Lodge , '' No . 2076 , London . There are 17 members of the " Correspondence Circle " in South Australia , including the Grand Lodge and six lodges . The Grand Master ' s name is also one of the number .

There are 43 lodges on the roll , returning in all some 2570 members , being the largest total yet registered , and an average of nearly 60 per lodge ; thus showing a considerable advance on the English average .

I have many times referred to this most useful Guide , and consider it one of'the best published in connection with any Grand Lodge because of the valuable information aflorded , interesting not onl y locally , but also generally , and a model compilation of its kind .

'l he Supreme Grand R . A . Chapter has onl y three subordinates as yet , returning together 168 companions . There are two Mark lodges working in South Australia , b y warrants of the Mark Grand Lodge , which arc in a flourishing condition ;

besides a R . A . chapter and Mark lodge under the Irish Constitution . There appears to be room for advance in respect of both these Degrees , especiall y of the Royal Arch , which is the officiall y recognised complement of the Master Mason ' s ceremony . \ V . J . II .

ROYAL MASONIC INSTITUTION FOR GIRLS .

Bro . tliu Lord Mayor and Lady Mayoress , with the City Sheriffs and their Indies , attended by the Under-SherilTs , paid a State visit lo the above School on Monday last . The civic party were received by the following members of the House Committee : Bios . Sir John Monckton , Chairman for the month ( with whom was Lady Monckton ) , Long , Letchworth , Richardson , Grey , Hammerton , Hunt , Matthews , and Loveland .

lhe girls went through an admirable performance of calisthenics , marching , music and pail singing , which the Chief Magistrate very warmly eulogised in a long and interesting speech ; after which two Gold Medallists , Miss Agnes Robinson and Miss Doris Eagle , approached the l . oid Mayor , and begged his lordship to accept from the pupils and staff two purses , containing together live guineas , as the Institution ' s loyal and loving contribution to lhe Mansion House Victoria Memorial Fund .

A careful inspection of the Schools and grounds was then under taken by the distinguished visitors , who before leaving expressed to Miss Buck and Miss Hutchinson , the Mali on and Head Governess , their great satisfaction with all they had seen . It is noteworthy that the whole of the civic dignitaries are Freemasons and Governors of the School .

Provincial Grand Mark Lodge Of Wiltshire.

PROVINCIAL GRAND MARK LODGE OF WILTSHIRE .

By the death of the late Bro . Lord Radnor , the cilice of l ' rov . Grand Master of this province became vacant in June , ujoo . A special Piov . Grand Lodge was , therefore , held at Swindon on lhe aoth of May last , to recommend , according to the Constitutions , lo H . R . H . the Grand Master a brother as successor to the late l ' rov . Grand Masler , and the brethren unanimousl y recommended Bro . tbe Rev . Frederick William Macdonald , l' . G . C . England . P . P . GAV . Wilts , for this post .

His Royal Highness the Grand Master was pleased to approve of the recommendation , and on the 201 I 1 day of | une last appointed Bro . tbe Rev . , ' .. Macdonald Provincial Grand Master of Mirk Master Masons in Wiltshire .

Provincial Grand Mark Lodge Of Wiltshire.

There was an important gathering of brethren of the Mark Degree on Wednesday , the nth instant , at Salisbury , for the installation . The ceremony took place at 1 . 30 p . m ., at the Council Chamber , which was kindly lent for the purpose by the Mayor , and had been handsomely decorated for the occasion by Mr . F . Simmonds , of Salisbury , the plants and ( lowers used in the decorations having been kindly sent by the Earl of Radnor from the Loncford Gardens .

the Earl of Euston , Pro Grand Master , came to perform the ceremony , and , on the report being made to him that Prov .
