Dorton , as Steward , took up the handsome sum of 200
guineas , a position , as regards the Charities , that any lodge might be proud of . The other toasts were " The Officers " and the Tyler ' s toast . Bro . M . Sherwin presided at the piano , and accompanied lhc singers , among whom were himself , Bros . Callcott , Cramphorne , R . Brown , and Carne . Bros . Bryan and Jolly recited , and the whole affair was an unmitigated pleasure .
THE GREAT CITY LODGE ( No . 1426 ) . — The second regular meeting of this lodge for the present session was held at the Cannon-street Hotel , on Saturday , the 14 th inst . The attendance on this occasion was not so large as usual , owing primarily to a moderate agenda for work , and in many cases to important engagements in connection with the forthcoming General Election . On these
accounts it had been considered proper to look upon this meeting as an " off night . " The W . M ., Bro . R . H . request of the VV . M . of the Ewell Lodge , No . 1 S 51 , Bro . R . F . Tomlin , of that lodge , having first proved his proficiency , was raised to the Third Degree . The lodge having been worked down , a notice of motion by Bro . Potter , S . W ., for the presentation of a Past Secretary's jewel to W . Bro . G . W . Blackie , P . M ., on his retirement from the ofiice cf Secretary of the lodge , and in slight
acknowledgment of his past earnest services and courtesy , ivas considered and unanimously agreed to . The VV . M . announced his intention to represent the lodge as Steward at the ensuing Festival of the Royal Masonic Benevolent Institution , and was promised support . He also proposed a candidate for initiation at the next meeting of the lodge . No further business offering , the lodge was then closed , and the brethien separated .

The members appeared in lodge in Masonic mourning , and the lodge room was appropriately draped . The VV . M . and ofiicers entered the lodge room in procession , the Organist playing the Dead March in " Saul , " after which the lodge
was opened . The minutes having been read , it was then resolved unanimously that the brethren deplore the loss sustained by the family of the late Treasurer , and that a letter of condolence with Mrs . Edinger and family be forthwith sent . Bro . Hunt , P . M ., at the invitation of the W . M ., duly raised Bro . Sutton to the Sublime Degree of
M . M . The bye-laws having been read , the members proceeded to the election of VV . M . Bro . Chas . J . R . Tijou , S . W ., had the honour of being unanimously elected to that ofiice . Bro . Logan , P . M ., was also unanimously chosen as Treaurer , and Bro . George Harrison , as Tyler . Bros . Holland , E . G . Johnson , and R . R . Green were appointed
as Auditors . A P . M . jewel of the value of ten guineas was voted to the retiring VV . M ., to whom also a vote of 'thanks was accorded for his having , during his year of ofiice , lent a harmonium to the lodge . The W . M . elect , in acknowledging the confidence reposed in him , urged upon the ollicers and candidates for office the necessity for making themselves thoroughly efficient for the
correct working of their several duties , and stated that in the selection of his officers he should appoint them in the order of their admission into the lodge , providing they were able to fulfil their duties in a satisfactory manner . For himself , as a young Mason , if he would be able to occupy the chair with credit to himself and to confer the Degrees as they should be done , he felt that the credit of the same
would be due to his esteemed friend , Bro . J . Taylor , the Preceptor of the Coborn Lodge of Instruction . Bro . Tijou further stated that he hoped to represent the lodge at the Festival of the Royal Masonic Benevolent Institution in February next , when he trusted the brethren would rally round
him , so that he could take up a better list than the lod ge had yet sent . The lodge was then closed in the customary manner , and » -he brethren sang the hymn " Now the evening shadows closing , " after which the W . M . and ofiicers left the lodge foo'n in procession , the Organist playing a voluntary meanwhile .
, -he brethren then partook of refreshments , after which 'he customary loyal and Masonic toasts were given and duly honoured , and in addition the W . M . gave " The Memory of their late Treasurer , Bro . P . Edinger , " which was received in solemn silence .

W . G . M . on Wednesday , the nth inst ., at the Bridge House Hotel , London Bridge . The VV . M ., Bro . H . M . Williams , opened the lodge , supported by Uro . C .

The minutes of the previous meeting were confirmed , and the dispensation for the temporary removal of the lodge was then read and ordered to be recorded . Ballots were taken in favour of Messrs . C . VV . Bennett and Walter W . Arber , who were then severally introduced into the lodge , and received the benefit of individual initiation . Thc VV . iVl .
" performed his task with thc utmost fidelity , and left nothing to be desired by either members or visitors in regard to correct and impressive ritual . The after-dinner speeches of the newly-initiated brethren proved how greatly they appreciated the solemn and appropriate introduction into Freemasonry they had received at his hands , and with the perfect assistance of his officers . A notice of motion
was given by Bro . Phillips , LP . M ., for presentation of a suitable jewel to the W . M . at the expiration of his term of office , and a Committee was then appointed to report to the next meeting as to the most suitable place for the future gatherings of the lodge . Several apologies for non-attendance were read , regret being expressed that the candidate for passing should again find it necessary to excuse himself ,
and also that illness should have prevented both Bros . J . Hammond and W . Hopekirk , Past Masters , from being present . Lodge was then closed in due form , and refreshment followed labour . Under the genial presidency of the
Worshipful Master a very agreeable evening was passed in social converse and harmony , and there being amongst members of this lodge and its frequent visitors many having both gift of song and of recitation , there was no lack of enjoyment up to the time of the Tyler ' s toast and necessary separation .
STRAND LODGE ( No . 19 S 7 ) . —A meeting of this lodge was held on Thursday afternoon , the 12 th inst , at the Criterion , Piccadilly , and there was a good attendance of the brethren . The lodge having been opened in due form , the W . M ., Bro . J . R . Stacey , initiated Mr . Richard Mackway , and afterwards passed Bros . G . Milton and W . H . Lawrence . The work was admirably performed .

Matthews , it was resolved to adopt , print , and circulate the Auditor ' s report . Mr . John Hughes having been introduced , the W . M . initiated him into the mysteries and privileges ot Ancient Freemasonry , Bro . VVright giving tho Lecture on the Tracing Board ancl the
Charge of the first Degree . The next business was thc election of W . M . and Treasurer , in both instances being unanimous in favour of , respectively , Bro . Harrison Branthwaicc , j . VV ., who vvas unable to be present , and Bro . Sir Philip Cunliffe Owen , K . C . M . G ., C . B ., CLE ., re-elected for the third time . Bro . Miller was re-elected Tyler by a show of hands . After five gentlemen had been proposed as initiates , the lodge was closed according to
ancient custom . The members partook of light refreshments , and spent the evening together in harmony . In the absence of thc W . M ., who had to attend a meeting of the Medical Defence Association at his own house , Bro . Wright presided , and gave the toasts , or rather the sentiments , of " The Oueen and the Craft '; " " The M . W . G . M . ; " " The Pro G . M .: "

with the sentiment the names of Bros . F . Richardson and Tipper , each of whom responded in suitable terms . The Secretary and Bro . Williams sang some songs , and Bro . M ., who
was ably assisted by his ollicers , but there was no work to do . Bro . De Jersey , in presenting the testimonial to Bro . U . M . Smythson , P . M ., Secretary , said : I fully concur with the remarks made b y the VV . M . concerning thc pleasing duty of presenting you , Bro . Smythson , wtth this testimonial , and I feel doubly pleased , as I am , next to you , the senior Past Master of the lodge . It is a somewhat
remarkable fact , bringing with ic most pleasant remembrances , that the first duty I performed , on being appointed Master of this lodge , was to present , your deeply-regretted father with a Past Master ' s jewel , and it is also a somewhat curious coincidence that he was then Treasurer of the lodge . Having been for the last live years Treasurer of this lodge , and having worked with you during that time , I
can fully appreciate and testify to your value as Secretary . I find by the records of the lodge that you have filled thc following offices : vou were initiated on January 25 th , 1 S 71 , and on being raised to the Sublime Degree of M . M . you were appointed I . G . ; Secretary in 1872 ; J . W ., 1 S 73 ; S . VV ., 1 S 74 ; again Secretary ; 1 S 75 ; elected VV . M ., 1 S 76 ; I . P . M . in 1877 ; again elected W . M ., 1 S 7 S ;
I . P . M ., 1 S 79 and 1 SS 0 ; and again appointed Secretary , 1 SS 1 to present date . 1 trust that you will value this jewel not for its metallic worth , but as a souvenir and proof of the esteem in which you are held , and of the good which has always existed between you and the other members of the lodge . In wearing il : you will think of the pleasant ( act that when the W . M . proposed making you a
present ot a gold centenary jewel , and that it should be contributed by voluntary subscription , the members came readily and willingly forward with their contributions . I hope and trust that you will live long to wear it , and that it may be worn when you are no more by your son , who undoubtedly will treasure thc jewel in memory of his father .

Smythson , in reply , said : Worshipful Master , Past Masters , Wardens , and Brethren , —! hardly know how to express my feelings , or convey to you how highly gratified I am at being the recipient of such a beautiful present . Bro . De Jersey has asked me not to value it for its intrinsic worth . Now , 1 can assure you , in the lirst place , I do value it for its intrinsic worth , because 1 know it is an
expensive jewel ; in the second , which is of far more importance to me , as being a spontaneous token of the esteem you are pleased to have tor me ; thirdly , because it is an emblem we are entitled to wear on account of our dear old lodge having attained its centenary . That event was anxiously looked forward to by my late lamented fatherin fact , it was the dearest wish of his heart : but ,
unfortunately , he was not to see the consummation of what he had so long looked for ; the Great Architect of the Universe deemed otherwise , as he died about six months before the completion of the 100 hundred years of its existence . I am wearing the P . M . ' s jewel that was presented by this lodge to my late father fur services rendered , and which he bequeathed to me on his death bed , and I shall place thc one you have been so kind as to present me with by its side .

The members appeared in lodge in Masonic mourning , and the lodge room was appropriately draped . The VV . M . and ofiicers entered the lodge room in procession , the Organist playing the Dead March in " Saul , " after which the lodge
was opened . The minutes having been read , it was then resolved unanimously that the brethren deplore the loss sustained by the family of the late Treasurer , and that a letter of condolence with Mrs . Edinger and family be forthwith sent . Bro . Hunt , P . M ., at the invitation of the W . M ., duly raised Bro . Sutton to the Sublime Degree of
M . M . The bye-laws having been read , the members proceeded to the election of VV . M . Bro . Chas . J . R . Tijou , S . W ., had the honour of being unanimously elected to that ofiice . Bro . Logan , P . M ., was also unanimously chosen as Treaurer , and Bro . George Harrison , as Tyler . Bros . Holland , E . G . Johnson , and R . R . Green were appointed
as Auditors . A P . M . jewel of the value of ten guineas was voted to the retiring VV . M ., to whom also a vote of 'thanks was accorded for his having , during his year of ofiice , lent a harmonium to the lodge . The W . M . elect , in acknowledging the confidence reposed in him , urged upon the ollicers and candidates for office the necessity for making themselves thoroughly efficient for the
correct working of their several duties , and stated that in the selection of his officers he should appoint them in the order of their admission into the lodge , providing they were able to fulfil their duties in a satisfactory manner . For himself , as a young Mason , if he would be able to occupy the chair with credit to himself and to confer the Degrees as they should be done , he felt that the credit of the same
would be due to his esteemed friend , Bro . J . Taylor , the Preceptor of the Coborn Lodge of Instruction . Bro . Tijou further stated that he hoped to represent the lodge at the Festival of the Royal Masonic Benevolent Institution in February next , when he trusted the brethren would rally round
him , so that he could take up a better list than the lod ge had yet sent . The lodge was then closed in the customary manner , and » -he brethren sang the hymn " Now the evening shadows closing , " after which the W . M . and ofiicers left the lodge foo'n in procession , the Organist playing a voluntary meanwhile .

The minutes of the previous meeting were confirmed , and the dispensation for the temporary removal of the lodge was then read and ordered to be recorded . Ballots were taken in favour of Messrs . C . VV . Bennett and Walter W . Arber , who were then severally introduced into the lodge , and received the benefit of individual initiation . Thc VV . iVl .
" performed his task with thc utmost fidelity , and left nothing to be desired by either members or visitors in regard to correct and impressive ritual . The after-dinner speeches of the newly-initiated brethren proved how greatly they appreciated the solemn and appropriate introduction into Freemasonry they had received at his hands , and with the perfect assistance of his officers . A notice of motion
was given by Bro . Phillips , LP . M ., for presentation of a suitable jewel to the W . M . at the expiration of his term of office , and a Committee was then appointed to report to the next meeting as to the most suitable place for the future gatherings of the lodge . Several apologies for non-attendance were read , regret being expressed that the candidate for passing should again find it necessary to excuse himself ,
and also that illness should have prevented both Bros . J . Hammond and W . Hopekirk , Past Masters , from being present . Lodge was then closed in due form , and refreshment followed labour . Under the genial presidency of the
Worshipful Master a very agreeable evening was passed in social converse and harmony , and there being amongst members of this lodge and its frequent visitors many having both gift of song and of recitation , there was no lack of enjoyment up to the time of the Tyler ' s toast and necessary separation .
STRAND LODGE ( No . 19 S 7 ) . —A meeting of this lodge was held on Thursday afternoon , the 12 th inst , at the Criterion , Piccadilly , and there was a good attendance of the brethren . The lodge having been opened in due form , the W . M ., Bro . J . R . Stacey , initiated Mr . Richard Mackway , and afterwards passed Bros . G . Milton and W . H . Lawrence . The work was admirably performed .

Hughes , C . C . Bro . Wright on behalf of the Audit Committee presented the balance sheet , which showed a most healthy state of the finances for so young a lodge . On thc motion of Bro . Matthews , it was resolved to adopt , print , and circulate the Auditor ' s report . Mr . John Hughes having been introduced , the W . M . initiated him into the mysteries and privileges ot Ancient Freemasonry , Bro . VVright giving tho Lecture on the Tracing Board ancl the
Charge of the first Degree . The next business was thc election of W . M . and Treasurer , in both instances being unanimous in favour of , respectively , Bro . Harrison Branthwaicc , j . VV ., who vvas unable to be present , and Bro . Sir Philip Cunliffe Owen , K . C . M . G ., C . B ., CLE ., re-elected for the third time . Bro . Miller was re-elected Tyler by a show of hands . After five gentlemen had been proposed as initiates , the lodge was closed according to

M ., who
was ably assisted by his ollicers , but there was no work to do . Bro . De Jersey , in presenting the testimonial to Bro . U . M . Smythson , P . M ., Secretary , said : I fully concur with the remarks made b y the VV . M . concerning thc pleasing duty of presenting you , Bro . Smythson , wtth this testimonial , and I feel doubly pleased , as I am , next to you , the senior Past Master of the lodge . It is a somewhat
remarkable fact , bringing with ic most pleasant remembrances , that the first duty I performed , on being appointed Master of this lodge , was to present , your deeply-regretted father with a Past Master ' s jewel , and it is also a somewhat curious coincidence that he was then Treasurer of the lodge . Having been for the last live years Treasurer of this lodge , and having worked with you during that time , I
can fully appreciate and testify to your value as Secretary . I find by the records of the lodge that you have filled thc following offices : vou were initiated on January 25 th , 1 S 71 , and on being raised to the Sublime Degree of M . M . you were appointed I . G . ; Secretary in 1872 ; J . W ., 1 S 73 ; S . VV ., 1 S 74 ; again Secretary ; 1 S 75 ; elected VV . M ., 1 S 76 ; I . P . M . in 1877 ; again elected W . M ., 1 S 7 S ;
I . P . M ., 1 S 79 and 1 SS 0 ; and again appointed Secretary , 1 SS 1 to present date . 1 trust that you will value this jewel not for its metallic worth , but as a souvenir and proof of the esteem in which you are held , and of the good which has always existed between you and the other members of the lodge . In wearing il : you will think of the pleasant ( act that when the W . M . proposed making you a
present ot a gold centenary jewel , and that it should be contributed by voluntary subscription , the members came readily and willingly forward with their contributions . I hope and trust that you will live long to wear it , and that it may be worn when you are no more by your son , who undoubtedly will treasure thc jewel in memory of his father .
Bro . Smythson , in reply , said : Worshipful Master , Past Masters , Wardens , and Brethren , —! hardly know how to express my feelings , or convey to you how highly gratified I am at being the recipient of such a beautiful present . Bro . De Jersey has asked me not to value it for its intrinsic worth . Now , 1 can assure you , in the lirst place , I do value it for its intrinsic worth , because 1 know it is an
expensive jewel ; in the second , which is of far more importance to me , as being a spontaneous token of the esteem you are pleased to have tor me ; thirdly , because it is an emblem we are entitled to wear on account of our dear old lodge having attained its centenary . That event was anxiously looked forward to by my late lamented fatherin fact , it was the dearest wish of his heart : but ,
unfortunately , he was not to see the consummation of what he had so long looked for ; the Great Architect of the Universe deemed otherwise , as he died about six months before the completion of the 100 hundred years of its existence . I am wearing the P . M . ' s jewel that was presented by this lodge to my late father fur services rendered , and which he bequeathed to me on his death bed , and I shall place thc one you have been so kind as to present me with by its side .
