placed at his disposal upwards of 200 votes . He had also borrowed 200 votes , and given his I . O . The lodge was then closed in due form , and the brethren partook of dinner , after which the usual loyal , Masonic , and provincial toasts were proposed and drank with enthusiasm . Bro . Spinks responded for the toast of " Bro . Eastes and the Provincial Grand Officers , Present and Past , of the Province of Kent . "

The Worshipful Master , in response to a hearty reception of his health , briefly responded , and assured the brethren that nothing should be wanting on his part to sustain the prestige of the lodge and the happiness of the brethren . Bro . Weston returned thanks for the toast of "The Past Masters , " and gave a most interesting account of his Masonic experiences during a recent visit to Cairo , in Egypt , at which place he met several brethren of the United

Military Lodge , who accorded him a hearty welcome , and , at thc special request of the Grand Master of the District , he had the honour of raising a distinguished brother , Bro . Quarter-master Marshall , of the 19 th Hussars , a Victoria Cross hero . Bro . Spinks also responded , and spoke of the honours showered upon Bro . Deeves , a Past Master of the lodge , now at Natal , who was there a Grand Officer both in Craft

and Mark Masonry , and also the First Principal in a chapter . He fully expected Bro . Deeves home shortly , and felt sure that when he did come he would receive a hearty reception at their hands . Bro . A . Penfold , P . M . 913 , P . G . Steward Kent , who is an hon . member of the lodge , in answer to repeated calls , said he felt it a great honour to belong to such a lodge , and had an interest in its welfare second only to his mother

lodge , the Pattison Lodge . With reference to the 200 votes owed by Bro . Weston for the late Bro . Hollyman ' s daughter , he had no doubt the Pattison Lodge would help him , although they would have a candidate themselves at the next election , in the son of a late worthy and good Mason , Bro . W . Watts . He cordially thanked them for the hearty reception of his name . Bro . Weston said he had no doubt that Bro . Hammerton

who took a kindly and generous interest in their military brethren , would assist him in making them up , but at the same time he could assure Bro . Penfold that in the cause of Bro . Watts' son he would aid him by all the means in his power . Among the other brethren present and not enumerated were Bros . W . Maule , S . VV . ; R . Gooding , J . W . ; J . During the evening a musical programme was efficiently given by Bros . Child , Wilkinson , Sample , and Cumberland .

SUNDERLAND . —Londonderry Lodge ( No . 2039 ) . —At the last regular meeting of the above lodge , the VV . M ., Bro . John C . Moor , P . M ., P . P . G . J . D ., read a letter from the Dowager Marchioness of Londonderry , enclosing a cheque for £ 5 , and expressing the deep interest she took in the lodge named after her beloved husband , the late Marquis of Londonderry , K . P ., Prov . G . M . Durham .

It was unanimously agreed that the letter be entered on the minutes , and that the thanks of the lodge be conveyed to her ladyship . This kind donation had enabled the lodge , with other donations amounting to £ 60 , to meet the cost of founding and furnishing the new lodge , and end its first year of office with the small deficit of only ios . due to the Treasurer ,

Bro . Beattie , P . M . This is no doubt very gratifying to all concerned , and especially to Bro . R . Hudson , the first VV . M . of the lodge and Prov . G . Sec . of the Province of Durham , and the W . M ., Bro . J . C . Moor . The sum of 11 guineas had also been given to one of the Schools during the year , and £ 3 to the Durham Masonic Education Fund . The next meeting of the lodge is on Friday evening , the 27 th inst .

LEEDS . —Prudence Lodge ( No . 2069 ) . —The installation of Bro . Rev . Dr . Smyth , P . M ., Past Deputy District Grand Master of the Eastern Archipelago , and Vicar of Far Headingley , as the second W . M . of this new lodge , took place in the Masonic Hall , Great George-street , on Saturday afternoon , the 14 th inst ., when there was a brilliant assemblage of the Craft , every lodge in this town

being , we believe , represented by its W . M . Bro . Alderman Woodhouse , the outgoing W . M ., performed the ceremony of installation , assisted by Bro . C L . Mason , P . M ., P . P . G . Treas ., and a Board of 25 Installed Masters . After the usual proclamations and salutations , the following brethren were invested by the new W . M . with their respective collars of office : Bros . Alderman Woodhouse , P . M ., J . P ., LP . M . ; C . L . Mason , P . M ., P . P . G . Treas ., S . W . ; T .

Trevor , P . M ., J . W . ; Wm . Watson , P . M ., Sec ; R . Abbott , Treas . ; M . W . Jameson , Asst . Sec . ; Rev . H . S . Butter , Chap . ; Rev . H . E . Player , S . D . ; S . S . Young , J . D . ; J . Tretwell , I . G . ; C . Middleton , D . of C ; VV . Storey and T . Atkinson , Stwds . ; and S . Barraud , Tyler . Two candidates for initiation and one as a joining member having been proposed , the lodge was closed with

the heartiest good wishes of all present , and the brethren adjourned to a substantial repast , at the close of which the usual toasts were duly honoured , with the " cup that cheers and does not inebriate , " according to the practice of this lodge . At 7 p . m . thc W . M . entertained a large company of ladies and gentlemen at a grand evening concert , in

celebration of his installation , and in lieu of the usual Masonic banquet—a new departure which has been received with much approval . _ Bro . Rev . Dr . Smyth has our warm congratulations and sincere wishes that he may have a very prosperous year of office , and not only may Prudence Lodge and the Province of West Yorkshire feel proud of his appointment , but we

think the whole Craft in England will feel that an honour has been done them by the acceptance of office by so distinguished and respected a brother , who , though he now fills for the first time , we believe , the W . M . ' s chair in England , was initiated into Freemasonry nearly 45 years ago , and has filled at one time or another out of this country every post in the lodge , under the English Constitution , from the Tyler to the W . M ., and up to that of Deputy District Grand Master .
