M ., who , in a very lucid way , stated his reasons for wishing the members to adopt them .

Bros . Mann , Higgins , Walls , Webb , and others having also spoken on the matter , they were unanimousl y carried : 1 . " That Grand Lodge be applied to for permission to remove the lodge to more convenient quarters ; " 2 . "That in Bye-law II . the word ' April' be struck out , so that the lodge meetings in the year be six instead of seven , as heretofore ; " and , 3 . " That the initiation fee and joining fee

be reduced to eight guineas and four guineas respectively , as was originally the case . " The election of W . M . resulted unanimously in favour of Bro . Speedy . Bro . W . Mann vvas re-elected Treasurer . The election of Tyler vvas postponed . The Audit Committee were appointed to audit the accounts of the lSth inst . The same Committee were ordered to make enquiries as to the most suitable place

for the lodge to be removed to , and to report the result of their investigations to the next meeting . Several communications having been read , and a jewel voted to the outgoing Master , the lodge was duly closed , and the brethren adjourned to the banquet . Upon the removal of the cloth the customary toasts were given . Bros . Taylor and Lewis responded upon behalf of "The Visitors . " The proceedings terminated at an early hour .

Cole asked the acceptance by the lodge of a somewhat scarce print ( framed ) of a Masonic ceremony in connection with the laying of the foundation stone of the Southampton Docks , in 1 S 33 . This was accepted , and thanks duly recorded , with an acknowledgment of Bro . Cole ' s zeal in the lodge ' s progress during the year . The subsequent banquet was well attended .

POOLE . —Amity Lodge ( No . 137 ) . —This lodge , which was consecrated in 1765 , vvas convened on Wednesday , the 5 th inst ., for the purpose of installing Bro . W . D . Dugdale , the S . W . of the lodge , vvho had been unanimously elected to the chair of King Solomon at the previous regular lodge . The lodge having been opened in due form , the W . M .

WARRINGTON . —Lodge of Lights ( No . 148 ) . —On the iGth of October , 16 4 6 , the first " gentleman " Mason vvas made at Warrington , in the person of Elias Ashmole , the author of the well known " History of the Order of the Garter" and founder of the Ashmolean Museum at Oxford . It is a matter for great regret that the ancient records of the lodge are lost , and that the history of

Freemasonry in Warrington cannot now be connective !} traced further back than November Sth , 1765 . However , it is our pleasure to place on record the fact that at no previous period of its history has the lodge been in a better condition both as to its work and constitution , and St' . John's Day , 1 SS 0 , will long be remembered as one of its brightest red letter days . The principal business of the day was the

installation of the W . M . elect , A . H . Young , M . B ., F . R . C . S . E ., & c , and the old lodge exceeded itself in the eclat which characterised the whole proceedings . Punctually at three o ' clock the lodge was opened , the minutes read and confirmed , and Bro . Warner passed to the Degree of a F . C . The W . M ., Bro . C . E . Hindley , then invited the senior member present , IBro . John Bowes , P . M ., P . P . G .

J . W . M ., Wardens , and brethren , which being completed , the VV . M . presented , in the name of thc lodge and on its behalf , a gold Past Master ' s jewel to the I . P . M ., Bro . Charles E . Hindley , and , in doing so , said it afforded him very great pleasure to present to his old friend that handsome jewel , and expressed a hope that he might live long to enjoy the esteem of his brethren . Hindley having suitably acknowledged the gift , the auditors presented their report as to the Treasurer ' s accounts , which was accepted and passed . " Hearty good wishes" having been tendered by the visitors , the lodge was closed , and the brethren adjourned to the Lion Hotel , where a splendid banquet awaited them . Grace before and after meat was said by the Secretary .

On the cloth being withdrawn , the VV . M . proposed the usual loyal and Masonic toasts , which were all well received . In reply to thc toast of his own health , the VV . M . said : I need scarcely remind you , brethren , that at your last meeting , vvhen , by ' your unanimous votes , you were good enough to select me to the coveted position of Master of Lodge 148 for the ensuing year , I vvas prevented , by an unavoidable

absence , from thanking you for the honour you conferred upon me . I take the earliest opportunity of repairing that omission . I have next to thank you , and I do so most heartily , for the very enthusiastic manner in which you have received the toast of my health . I can only regard this as but another instance of the universal kindness and goodwill which has been so generously extended to me ever

since I joined your lodge , to which I am , indeed , indebted for my present fposition , and to which also I hope I may venture ; to attribute the unusually large meeting of to-day . If I fail in my endeavours to express to you how fully I appreciate your kindness , I must ask you to extend that kindness still further , and accept the assurance that my failure is not due to any want of will , but rather to

a lack of the necessary power of expression . To •preside over a lodge in which the elements of discord are absent , in which good feeling and fraternal friendship are predominant , is , I take it , a great privilege , and one which I shall not fail to value as such , but further I cannot but regard it as a distinction of no mean order to be in any way connected with a lodge whose history is itself

a pride to itsmembers , for this lodge will ever be historically identified as the lodge into which the first gentleman amateur was admitted . Since that event the progress of our lodge might almost be regarded as presenting an epitome of the progress of Masonry in England , fi is a matter for congratulation , brethren , that the lodge continues to exercise its discretionary powers as to the admission of

new members with a ritfidity which I could wish all lodges would imitate , for I am firml y convinced that only b y such a course , i . e ., the exclusion of unsuitable candidates , the future interests of Freemasonry will be properly p rovided for , and its prestige permanently maintained . Following the example of my predecessors in this chair , it will be my endeavour to maintain the efficient working of the

lodge , and so to advance its interests that it may still continue to improve during my year of office as it has done in the past ; and , remembering the well qualified brethren vvho have done me the honour to accept office under me , there is little fear but that I shall succeed . For the . benefit of these officers , and indeed for myself , it is my purpose toorganise lodges of instruction , to meet at stated

periods under the able guidance of our esteemed Secretary , Bro . Bowes . Thus brethren , with good officers , with a goodly array of Past Masters to fall back upon , if dire necessity should so require it , and with the music which our brother Organist knows so well how to discourse , I look forward with confidence to a successful year of office , full of pleasure , goodwill , and harmony . The toast vvas received

with all heartiness and goodwill , and musical honours . The W . M . next proposed" The W . M . and Brethren of Lodge No . 1250 , " which vvas acknowledged b y the W . M ., Bro . J . H . Galloway . Bro . J . Rymer Young , in proposing "The Health of the Installing Master , " remarked that he should require the attention of the brethren for a few moments only , inasmuch as he felt that it was difficult to

say anything concerning their esteemed Bro . Bowes that had not already been well said . He would say , however , that notwithstanding the loyal manner in which they had responded to the toasts of the Queen and the Prince of Wales , and not forgetting , too , the hearty manner in which they had received the name of the W . M ., he felt certain that of the entire list of toasts , none could be more heartily

responded to than that of their worthy Secretary , the Installing Master . To tell them that Bro . Bowes had performed that beautiful ceremony perhaps some dozen times in their own lodge , would be to repeat a simple matter of history ; toinform them thatheinvariablydischargedhisduties in a manner that made the ceremony always interesting and instructive would be to sing once again a very old song

indeed—they all knew that ; and to remind them that Bro . Bowes had the good will and regard of every member of the Ancient Lodge of Lights would be to afford another piece of gratuitous information that vvas totally unnecessaryin short , it would not be advisable to detain them whilst he recited the entire catatague of Bro . Bowes' virtues , but should content himself with asking them to drink in as

hearty a manner as possible " | The Health of their Installing Master , " and , as it were , renew an annual vote of confidence in their worthy Secretary , Bro . Bowes . The toast was received in a most hearty manner—indeed , the worthy brother received quite an ovation . "The Past Masters and Officers of No . 148 " vvas responded toby the I . P . M ., and Bro . J . Paul Ryland , T . W ., in very felicitous terms . The

toast of " The Visitors " was very warmly received , and brought to their feet a crowd of brethren , for the most part P . M . ' s and some of them Provincial Officers . Space will not suffice to record their speeches , but one and all acknowledged the pleasure the day ' s proceedings had afforded them . Bro . J . Pickthall , P . M ., proposed "The Musical Brethren , " and in doingsodilated atlength on the influence

of music and the excellent quality their esteemed Organist , Bro . T . M . Pattison , had treated them to that night . Bros . Barton , Curzon , and Councillor Francomb had laid them under great obligations , and they all felt grateful to them and their esteemed conductor whom he had just named . He sincerely hoped to see Bro . Pattison in the W . M . ' s chair someday . This toast vvas greeted with musical honours ,

after which thebrethren individually acknowledged the compliment . The Tyler ' s toast brought a most p leasant day to an end , and we must say the whole proceedings were well and carefully manipulated from beginning to end , and the W . M . may well feel proud at being at the head of a lodge composed of such material as the Lodge of Lights , No . 148 , Warrington .
