BACUP . —Samaritan Lodge ( No . 286 ) . —The members of the above lodge met on Thursday , the 30 th ult ., to celebrate the festival of St . John , vvhen there was a good attendance of the brethren , and many lodges were represented . The lodge having been opened , in due course , the minutes of the previous meeting were read , and the

Installing Master , Bro , Taylor , took the chair and proceeded to instal Bro . Hargreaves as W . M . for the ensuing year , which he did in a very satisfactory manner , being well assisted by Bro . The lodge was closed at 6 . 5 p . m ., and the brethren adjourned to banquet , which was sumptuously provided . After banquet the usual toasts were proposed , commencing with "The Queen , " all of them being heartily received .

The remaining portion of thc evening was enlivened with songs and recitations , Bro . James Dearden being particularly requested by the brethren to sing an amusing and laughable song , which he did in excellent style , receiving the usual acknowledgment . The Tyler's toast and the " National Anthem " brought to a close a most enjoyable meeting .

MACCLESFIELD . — Combermere Lodge of Union ( No . 295 ) . —The instillation of W . M . for the ensuing year , and the festival of St . John thc Evangelist , vvas held on Thursday , the Gth inst ., and the Masonic gathering passed off with considerable eclat . Additional importance was given to the appointment of W . M . this year from the fact that the R . W . P . G . M . of Cheshire ,

Lord de Tabley , has selected Macclesfield for the honour of receiving Provincial Grand Lodge in September next . The brethren had unanimously selected Bro . J . Jackson , jun ., P . M ., Prov . G . T ., and P . P . G . D . C , to the distinguished position of W . M ., and the installation took place in the presence of brethren from both lodges , and several distinguished visitors , including Bros . R . Beales , P . M .

expert a brother in the chair for the year , which would be fraught with exceptional importance to the local brethren on account of the visit of Provincial Grand Lodge , and expressed the hope that the VV . M . would be blessed with health and strength to guide the brethren in their important work . The lodge closed in due form about five p . m . - Afterwards the brethren sat down to a choice banquet

provided b y Bro . Comberbach , at which the usual loyal and Masonic toasts were duly honoured . Bro . Wadsworth proposed " The Worshipful Master . " The present , he said , was an exceptional year ; in theautumn the Provincial Grand Lodge would hold its annual meeting in Macclesfield , and the Masonic work which this entailed rendered it absolutely necessary that the Master of the lodge should be thoroughly acquainted with thc duties . Wadsworth ) congratulated the lodge on the installation of Bro . Jackson as Worshipful Master , for he was quite certain a more efficient Mason could not have been found in the entire Province of Chester . The Worshipful Master , in responding to the toast , said he was sure the Macclesfield brethren would assist him all they could in giving a worthy welcome to the Provincial Granel Master , Lord de Tabley , arid the Grand Lodge , on the occasion of its meeting in Macclesfield this year . lie also alluded li the fact that

close upon £ 50 , 000 had been expended by the Masonic Charities during the year , and expressed his satisfaction that Che-shire stood so prominent in this good work . Bros . Leech , Cockayne , Maydew , Evans , Gill , Blackshaw , Needham , and Shuttleworth contributed to the harmony which prevailed by some excellent vocal selections , Bro . Shuttleworth , since his appointment as Organist , having laudably exerted himself both to add to the impressiveness of the lodge ceremonies and to thc pleasures of " refreshment . "

LEICESTER . —St . John's Lodge ( No . 279 ) . — The annual festival of this lodge was held at the Masonic Hall , on Wednesday , the 5 th inst , and the gathering to witness the installation of Bro . J . Farndale , the W . M . elect , was one of the largest , and Masonically one of the most influential , which has been witnessed in the province for many years past , larger in fact than at the ordinary meetings of the Provincial Grand Lodge . Altogether there were eighty brethren present , and the character of the gathering will be understood by our readers when we say that the Board of Installed Masters present at thc ceremony of installation consisted of thc unusually large number of twenty-three Masters and Past Masters of tlie Craft , and several others were afterwards present at the banquet . The ceremony of installation was performed in a most

effective and impressive manner by the outgoing W . M ., VV . Bro . P . M . M'Allister kindly officiating as D . C . Upon taking the chair the newly-appointed W . M . appointed and invested the following officers for the ensuing year : Bros , the Rev . J . IT . Smith , I . P . M . ; J . Orlando Law , S . W . ; T . Coltman , J . W . ; C . Tomlin , D . C ; C . Rowley , I . G . ; and Thomas Dunn and James Tanser , Tylers . It was intimated that at a future meeting Bro . thc Rev . Robert Seddon would be appointed and invested Chaplain of the lodge . In the name of the lodge the VV . M . presented Bro . the Rev . J . IT . Smith with a very handsome P . M . ' s jewel , and in doing so he spoke in terms of the highest eulogy of the very admirable manner in which the reverend brother had conducted the business

of the lodge during the past year , and the zealous attention which he had given to its interests , notwithstanding the long distance he resided from Leicester ( the reverend gentleman being one of the Masters of Dulwich College ) . Bro . Smith acknowledged the compliment in a most eloquent and feeling speech , in whicii he dwelt with much earnestness upon the marked kindness whicii had been shown to him bv the lodge , and the facilities which had

been considerably afforded him for passing to the highest office . On this latter point he gratefully acknowledged the courteous self-sacrifice of Bro . Farndale in deferring his own well-earned promotion in order to give place to him ( Bro . Smith ) . The reverend gentleman also gratefully acknowledged the valuable assistance which he had received during the year from the various officers , mentioning in particular Bro . Coltman , who had most zealously and

efficiently discharged very onerous duties as Secretary . After the dispeisal of the ordinary lotlge business , whicii lasted till nearly eight o ' clock , upwards of eighty of the brethren sat tlown to a very excellent banquet , under the presidency of Bro . Farndale , W . M . The usual loyal and Masonic toasts were given and responded to with much earnestness and enthusiasm , the health of the W . M . being , of course , received with great cordiality and with many wishes that he may have a

happy ana prosperous year of office . During the evening an excellent glee party , under the direction of Bro . Cleaver , and consisting of Bros . Cleaver , Farndale , Gurden , Stanhope , ana Stevens , rendered a number of fine old glees in admirable style . Bro . Dr . Johnston and several other brethren also gave very excellent songs , accompanied on the piano by Bro . Chamberlain . Thus was spent one of the most enjoyable Masonic meetings which has been witnessed in Leicester for some time .

FAREHAM . —Lodge of Harmony ( No . 309 ) . —The ceremony of installing the VV . M of this lodge for the ensuing year took place at the Red Lion Hotel , on Thursday evening , Gth inst . Thc choice of the lodge had fallen unanimously upon Bro . thc Rev . A . Arthur Headley , P . G . Chaplain Hants anel Isle of Wight , who , during the previous year , had filled thc office of S . VV . The ceremony of installation was performed , according to ancient

custom , by Bro . Arthur R . Holbrook , the retiring W . M ., and at the conclusion the officers for the year ensuing were appointed and invested in the following order : Bros . A . R . It was resolved , on the motion of Bro . J . Tayler , P . M ., that the thanks of the lodge , together with a P . M . 's jewel , be presented to Bro . A . R . Holbrook , the retiring W . M ., for the manner in which he had carried out his

expressed by the visitors , tbe lodge was closed in peace and harmony at 7 . 20 . The Festival of St . John was afterwards celebrated in the banquet hall , and when the appetites of the brethren had been appeased , the usual loyal and Masonic toasts were duly honoured . Brethren , " "The Masonic Chanties , " " Ihe Newly Invested Officers , " "The Past Masters , " and " The Banquet Stewards " were likewise proposed and duly responded to . Some excellent singing was accomplished by Bros . Martin Thomas , P . M . ; C . Stanley , T . Shorrocks , Eldred , H . Walmsley , G . A . Coleman , and others ; whilst Bro .. W . G . Cunliffe did good service at the piano . A high meed of praise must be awarded to that accomplished

elocutionist , Bro . D . Donbavand , for his masterly rendering of the soul-stirring " Maniac , " which fairly kept the brethren spellbound during its interpretation . At a later period of the evening this talented brother recited " My Lord Tomnoddy " with similar power and success . After one of the most enjoyable evenings in the annals of this lodge , Ihe brethren separated at 11 . 30 . The banquet Stewards were . Bros . Lisenden , Elderton , Harper , and Gooden .

DARWEN . —Harmony , and Industry Lodge ( No . 381 ) . —On Wednesday , the 12 th inst ., the members of this Lancashire lodge held their annual meeting for the installation of thc VV . The remaining portion of thc evening was enlivened with songs and recitations , Bro . James Dearden being particularly requested by the brethren to sing an amusing and laughable song , which he did in excellent style , receiving the usual acknowledgment . Jackson as Worshipful Master , for he was quite certain a more efficient Mason could not have been found in the entire Province of Chester . LEICESTER . —St . John's Lodge ( No . 279 ) . — The annual festival of this lodge was held at the Masonic Hall , on Wednesday , the 5 th inst , and the gathering to witness the installation of Bro . effective and impressive manner by the outgoing W . M ., VV . Bro . P . M . M'Allister kindly officiating as D . C . Upon taking the chair the newly-appointed W . Robert Seddon would be appointed and invested Chaplain of the lodge . In the name of the lodge the VV . M . presented Bro . the Rev . J . IT . Smith with a very handsome P . M . ' s jewel , and in doing so he spoke in terms of the highest eulogy of the very admirable manner in which the reverend brother had conducted the business

of the lodge during the past year , and the zealous attention which he had given to its interests , notwithstanding the long distance he resided from Leicester ( the reverend gentleman being one of the Masters of Dulwich College ) . Bro . Smith acknowledged the compliment in a most eloquent and feeling speech , in whicii he dwelt with much earnestness upon the marked kindness whicii had been shown to him bv the lodge , and the facilities which had

been considerably afforded him for passing to the highest office . On this latter point he gratefully acknowledged the courteous self-sacrifice of Bro . Farndale in deferring his own well-earned promotion in order to give place to him ( Bro . Smith ) . The reverend gentleman also gratefully acknowledged the valuable assistance which he had received during the year from the various officers , mentioning in particular Bro . Coltman , who had most zealously and

efficiently discharged very onerous duties as Secretary . After the dispeisal of the ordinary lotlge business , whicii lasted till nearly eight o ' clock , upwards of eighty of the brethren sat tlown to a very excellent banquet , under the presidency of Bro . Farndale , W . M . The usual loyal and Masonic toasts were given and responded to with much earnestness and enthusiasm , the health of the W . M . being , of course , received with great cordiality and with many wishes that he may have a

happy ana prosperous year of office . During the evening an excellent glee party , under the direction of Bro . Cleaver , and consisting of Bros . Cleaver , Farndale , Gurden , Stanhope , ana Stevens , rendered a number of fine old glees in admirable style . Bro . Dr . Johnston and several other brethren also gave very excellent songs , accompanied on the piano by Bro . Chamberlain . Thus was spent one of the most enjoyable Masonic meetings which has been witnessed in Leicester for some time .

FAREHAM . —Lodge of Harmony ( No . 309 ) . —The ceremony of installing the VV . M of this lodge for the ensuing year took place at the Red Lion Hotel , on Thursday evening , Gth inst . Cunliffe did good service at the piano . A high meed of praise must be awarded to that accomplished

elocutionist , Bro . D . Donbavand , for his masterly rendering of the soul-stirring " Maniac , " which fairly kept the brethren spellbound during its interpretation . At a later period of the evening this talented brother recited " My Lord Tomnoddy " with similar power and success .
