LEEDS . —Prudence Lodge ( No . 2069 ) . —The regular meeting of this lodge took place on Saturday , the 8 th inst ., in the Leeds Masonic Hall , Great George-street . The W . M ., Bro . Charles Letch Mason , P . M . and P . P . G . Treasurer , vvas supported by Bros . Dr . Smyth , P . G . Chap ., I . P . M . ; Tudor Trevor , P . M ., S . V / . ; W . Watson , P . M ., J . Barraud , Tyler . Following the laudable custom initiated by him , the W . M . had sent out official invitations to the VV . M ., Past Masters , Officers , and brethren of his mother lodge ( No .
304 ) , and there vvas a satisfactory response , the invitations having been accepted by the W . M ., Bro . T . Myers ; the W . M . elect , Bro . J . Brownfoot ; Bros . Jose * Rickards , J . VV . ; W . H . Hewson , Secretary ; Cockerline , S . D . ; and the following Past Masters : Bros . R . Craig , P . P . G . D ., W . F . Tomlinson , and Hill . Among the general body of visitors , of whom there was a good
muster , were Bros . H . France , P . P . O . D . C , 1019 ; A . Hess , 1019 ; Charles Normanton , E . Barber ( Love and Honour ); J . W . Bailey , and others . , Bro . the Rev . John Henry Evans was balloted for as a joining member , and accepted . Messrs . Charles Cryer and
Edward Bentely were . balloted for , and being approved were initiated into the mysteries of Freemasonry , the ceremonies being worked in that efficient and impressive manner for which the lodge is celebrated . _ The Prov . Grand Chaplain next gave his admirable exposition of the tracing board in this Degree .
Bro . Tudor Trevor , P . M ., S . W ., then delivered his instructive and admirable lecture upon the two great pillars of the Temple . He said that some agreed with Josephus that they were placed outside or at the entrance , whilst others placed them inside the porch on each side of the gate . Whatever their exact situation , these pillars stood on the right and left , and were admired as
well for their marvellous beauty of workmanship as tor their symbolical meaning . They were cast in brass B -C . 100 5 , in the clayey ground between Succoth and / . uredatha , by Hiram , of Tyre , who vvas filled with wisdom Tu V ? erstanding and cunning to work all works in brass , i he height of each pillar was 18 cubits , or 27 feet , and ; their circumference 12 cubits or 18 feet . Including the chapiter , which
was ;** feet , the total height was 33 feet 9 inches , but as the porch was 240 feet in height their loftiness need not surprise us . On each pillar vvas set a chapiter , the precise J . orm ° i which has caused much discussion , some describing 1 C as a crown , some as two crowns joined together , others as a globe or spherical body . The probable shape of the chapiter was an oval . Besides , the pillars being very oeautiful ornaments to the Temple , they were most prob-, . « . —„ ., » . v ... w . u ... ^ . w , * .. t * j , v- > i » "luai

Such memorial Pillars have existed not only from the earliest times , as een in the Egyptian obelisks , but we read of J acob commemorating by a pillar at Bethel his vision of the "gehc host ascending and descending from earth to "eaven on a ladder , then another at Galeed in memory O- r salliance with Laban . Joshua , Samuel , Absolom , tvv . . I erected memorial pillars ; so no doubt in these vo pillars King Solomon desired to perpetuate in the

minds of the children of Israel God ' s providence over them in the wilderness , and to remind them as they daily passed into the Temple of his abundant and repeated promises of support . The support of the Temple virtually depended , it would appear , on these two magnificent columns , and as their erection was typical of the wealth and splendour of King Solomon , so their destruction vvas
typical of the rum and annihilation of the Jewish nation . Typically to us those pillars had great and important lessons of morality , of loyalty , and of Charity . No Freemason could be an infidel , or a blasphmer , or a slanderer , if he lived up to his great privileges and obligations . As the Temple vvas divided into three parts—the porch , the sanctuary , and the Holy of Holies—so Freemasonry is
divided into three Degree ; and , as with the Temple , each step brought the worshipper nearer the Holy of Holies , so vvith the Temple of Freemasonry we were led step by step nearer the object of our researches , and we were reminded of the impartial justice of the Most High , who had defined
for our instruction the limits of good and evil , and that He would hereafter reward or punish , as we had obeyed or disregarded His divine commands . Pray we , brethren , that we may each so live that when we shall be summoned hence , we may ascend to the Grand Lodge above , where the world ' s Great Architect lives and rules for evermore .
A cordial vote of thanks was enthusiasticall y passed to the S . W . for his paper , the visiting brethren being especially hearty in their expression of thanks . Bro . Watson , P . M ., J . VV ., moved— "That 10 guineas be voted out of the lodge funds towards endowing the W . M . ' s chair of the Old Men ' s and Women ' s Benevolent Fund . " He said at the present moment there were something like 130 old men and women waiting to get on that
Fund , there being only two or three vacancies . They could hardly picture to themselves the distress and suffering vvhich that meant . In many cases , unless the Craft subscribed liberally , a number of those poor people vvould be thrown upon the parish . It vvas a most deplorable state of things , and he felt sure the brethren of that lodge vvould do their share towards finding a remedy . As the Festival came on in February , he had somewhat hurried his motion , but its extreme urgency must be his excuse .
Bro . Trevor , S . W ., seconded the resolution , which was carried unanimously . Bro . Trevor , S . W ., gave notice of a resolution appropriating three guineas from the funds of the lodge towards the Leeds Masonic Educational and Benevolent Fund . That noble and deserving Charity vvas urgently in need of funds , and whilst they did what they could for the great London
Charities , they must not forget their duty nearer home . Bro . Myers , W . M . Philanthropic Lodge , expressed his sincere acknowledgments to Bro . C L . Mason for the invitation he had sent to Philanthropic Lodge . He was sure that he and all the members of his lodge who had accepted that invitation had enjoyed a great treat in listening to the lecture of Bro . Trevor , and seeing the manner in which
the business of Lodge Prudence vvas carried out . It must be a great encouragement to brethren when they had the opportunity of listening to such lectures , and he wished the example were followed by other lodges . Bro . Tomlinson , P . M . 304 , also thanked the W . M . for his invitation , and said that he had initiated in that
direction a practice vvhich commended itself to all , and one which he trusted the other Leeds lodges vvould follow . Bro . R . Abbott , Treas ., having announced that his son vvas a candidate for initiation in that lodge , " Hearty good wishes " were reciprocated , and the proceedings closed . An adjournment vvas made to the banqueting hall , where an ample and seasonable repast vvas partaken of by a large
company . Under the direction of Bro . Howarth , an effective programme of music , songs , and recitations was gone through , and alike to members and visitors the evening vvas a most happy one .
HEATON MOOR . —Prince Edward Lodge ( No . 2109 ) . —The first annual meeting of this lodge vvas held in the lodge rooms , Assembly Hall , on Thursday , tbe 13 th inst ., the ceremony of installation being performed by the retiring Master , Bro . T . A . Hopewell , P . M ., P . D . G . D . C . Bombay , supported by a Board of Installed Masters , consisting of Bros . J . G . Bromley , P . M . ; VV . Cole , P . M . ;
E . Pike , P . M . ; W . H . Hughes , P . M . ; G . Hunt , P . M . ; J . L . Laidlaw , P . M . ; P . Fulton , P . M . ; Cook , P . M . ; C . D . Cheetham , jun . * , P . M . ; D . Murray , P . M . ; J . Stovold , W . M . 993 ; A . A . Moss , W . M . 1375 ; Thomason , VV . M . 1993 ; and others . The officers invested were Bros . Wm . Webster , W . M . ; E . Barton , S . W . ; J . H . Wells , J . W . ; Rev . * R . W . Buckley , D . D ., Chap . ; S . J .
Thomson , Treas . ; W . Cole , P . M ., Sec ; E . Pike , P . M ., D . C ; E . Broadbent , S . D . ; J . W . Berra , J . D . ; J . G . Litton , I . G . ; T . T . Shann , A . W . Reynolds , G . Seager , and J . Hurst , Stewards ; and J . Birchall , Tyler . The Treasurer ' s report showed the position of the lodge to be sound and satisfactory . Only formed 12 months since , very considerable expense had been gone to in furniture , jewels ,
& c , but there was not an outside account standing against the lodge . At the banquet which followed about a hundred ladies and brethren sat down . The usual Masonic toasts were given , without the honours . The Immediate Past Master , in proposing the toast of " The VVorshipful Master , " remarked that he had not been
quite three years in the Craft , and that it vvas seldom a brother reached the chair in so short a time ; but that it vvas also seldom that a brother possessed the skill and ability to qualify himself , as Bro . Webster most certainly had done , in so short a period . A handsome Past Master ' s jewel ( manufactured by Bro . Geo . Kenning , London ) , surmounted by the
Prince Edward cnat-of-arms , was presented to the I . P . M ., Bro . Hopewell , who , in thanking the brethren , said he was proud to have it by the side of the one sent to him from his mother lodge—Emulation , noo , Bombay . The small hall , which had been furnished as a drawingroom , vvas used for singing , recitations , & c , the large hall
being reserved for dancing . The following musical brethren contributed valuable assistance : Bros . Professor Greenwood , W . Coffey , Sparks , Cole , and Levvtas . The gathering broke up shortly before one o'clock , and all agreed that the presence of ladies had contributed much to its success , and had proved a most pleasing and agreeable innovation . The lodge is conducted on temperance principles .

HEATON MOOR . —Prince Edward Lodge ( No . 2109 ) . —The first annual meeting of this lodge vvas held in the lodge rooms , Assembly Hall , on Thursday , tbe 13 th inst ., the ceremony of installation being performed by the retiring Master , Bro . T . A . Hopewell , P . M ., P . D . G . D . C . Bombay , supported by a Board of Installed Masters , consisting of Bros . J . G . Bromley , P . M . ; VV . Cole , P . M . ;
