After the Duke ' s reply the lodge was closed , and all retired to the banqueting hall , where light refreshments were partaken of , and Bro . Dhaijabhoy F . Camadore , P -D . G . J . W . And right humanely-savage and savagely-humane they comported themselves to the close of the banquet , when the calumet of peace was smoked , and we may assume there vvas a general breakdown after the manner in vogue among " Savages , " as veraciously delineated on the menu card .

Bro . Sir Robert Fowler , M . P ., P . G . W ., has been on a tour through the Australian colonies . During his stay in Melbourne he vvas entertained by the Mayor of the Victorian capital at a banquet , in the Town Hall . Sir Robert was also elected an honorary member of the Melbourne Masonic Club .

Bro . Sir W . J . Clarke , Bart ., R . W . District and Prov . Grand Master of the English , Irish , and Scotch Freemasons of Victoria , with Lady Clarke and family , have returned to Melbourne , after * a year ' s sojourn in the old country . It is the intention of the Melbourne Craft to honour our distinguished brother vvith a ball in the new Freemasons' Hall , of vvhich company Sir William is

chairman . Bro . Lord Carrington , P . G . W ., Governor of New South Wales , and Lady Carrington were the guests of Bro . Sir H . B . Lock , Governor of Victoria , and Lady Lock , on their visit to Melbourne during the Victoria Racing Club fortnight . Lord Carrington was

entertained at luncheon by the members of the Melbourne Masonic Club . Originally , however , it was intended to have given a Masonic ball in honour of the distinguished visitors , but their engagements vvould not admit of the arrangements being carried out at that time . Bro . William Beach , the champion oarsman of the world , who is a member of Lodge Tarbolton , No . 377 , Sydney

( S . C ) , has been the recipient of warm receptions at Adelaide , Melbourne , and Sydney , on returning from his victorious English tour . Testimonials ( purses of gold , jewellery , and the like ) , as well as entertainments by the Mayors of the three cities , were literally showered on the great sculler ; and at Sydney Bro . Lord Carrington took a very active part in the reception . ^ At Melbourne Bro . Beach vvas " put up " at the Masonic Club .

Bro . Thomas Fenn , President of the Board of General Purposes , and P . G . D ., ' was present at the meeting of the La France Lodge , No . 2060 , on the 17 th inst ., and gave the charge in the French language , to the great satisfaction of the French brethren and of the four initiates . Bro . Deputy T . Beard entertained a party of

friends at the Guildhall Tavern , on Monday last . There were present Bros . William Alpheus Higgs , Deputy George Sims , Albert J . Altman , Major Josephs , George Foster , Henry Squires , Deputy J . E . Walford , George Kenning , T . Beard , jun ., Mathew R . Webb , and others . The funeral of the late Bro . Thomas Burdett Yeoman took place at Abney Park Cemetery on Monday ,

the ioth inst ., and vvas attended by many of the deceased's family and friends . Bro . Yeoman was greatly respected by his brother Masons , and was the author of two or three Masonic songs , vvhich were deservedly popular . The brethren of the Franklin lodge , No . 838 , Boston , held at the Peacock and Royal Hotel , recently commemorated the Festival of St . John , when Bro . Robert

Hayes was installed as VV . M . The various new officers for the ensuing year were invested , and the other routine business having also been transacted , a large party sat down to a sumptuous banquet , the serving up of vvhich reflected much credit on the taste and spirit displayed by Bro . Clemow . The after proceedings , under the able chairmanship of the VV . M ., were of a very pleasant character .

A Masonic Jubilee Ball , under the patronage of Bro . James Terry , P . P . S . G . W . Norths and Hunts , Secretary R . M . B . I ., of the Henley Lodge , No . 1472 , and the Leopold Lodge , No . 1571 , vvill take place at the Cannonstreet Hotel , on Thursday , the 24 th February . Masonic Craft clothing to be worn . Bro . Thos . Bidgood ' s Quadrille Band has been secured for the occasion . The proceeds ,

after payment of all expenses , will be handed over to the Masonic Charities . Full particulars to be had of Bro . G . Hughes , Hon . Secretary , 12 , Argyle-road , Leytonstoneroad , E . The value of hand grenades as fire-extinguishers , and the great advantage of having them on the premises , was shown at the fire which occurred on Sunday last at

Wrottesley , the seat of Lord Wrottesley . His lordship and Lady Wrottesley and family , and the household were in bed at the time of the outbreak , but fortunately the housekeeper vvas awakened by the noise , and on going downstairs she discovered the kitchen in flames , she immediately raised an alarm , and Lord Wrottesley and the servants , with hand genades , succeeded in putting out the fire .

The seventeenth annual issue of the " Cosmopolitan Masonic Calendar and Pocket Book" for 1 SS 7 , published by Mr . George Kenning , of the Freemason , contains a very comprehensive list of the various Masonic bodies throughout the kingdom , and lists of the principal Grand Lodges of foreign countries . There has been an

increase of 53 to the number of Craft lodges under the Grand Lodge of England during the year . The latest number lor 1 S 87 is 2182 . The name , time , and place of meeting of all the lodges , and the names of the Grand and the principal Provincial Grand Officers are given in the Calendar—Newcastle Journal .

M . for the year , and afterwards appointed and invested his officers . The St . John ' s Lodge , No . 1039 , Lichfield , held their annual ball at the George Hotel , Lichfield , on the 14 th inst ., the attendance in spite of the weather , being

numerous . The fete passed off most satisfactorily . Bro . J . V . Cooper was installed W . M . of the Ferrum Lodge , No . 1 S 4 S , Middlesborough , on Wednesday , the 12 th inst ., the ceremony being performed by Bro . the Hon . W . T . Orde-Powlett , D . P . G . M . N . and E . Y . rks . The new W . M . subsequently presided at the banquet at the George Hotel , a very pleasant evening being spent . The True and Faithful Lodge , No . 318 , Helston , held its annual meeting on Wednesday , the 12 th inst ., when Bro . C Hudson was installed W . M . for the ensuing year , and afterwards invested his officers . The banquet took place at the Angel Hotel and vvas followed bv some

capital speeches and songs . Bro . R . Clarkson was installed W . M . of the Zetland Lodge , No . 561 , Guisborough , on Thursday , the 13 th inst ., the ceremony being ably performed by Bro . A . C Knowles , P . P . S . G . D . North and East Yorkshire . Bro . the Hon . W . T . Orde-Powlett , D . P . G . M ., was among the visitors .

The Prov . G . Lodge of Roxburgh and Selkirk Shires held their annual meeting at Galashiels on the 12 th inst ., under the auspices of Lodge St . John , No . 262 , of that town . R . W . Bro . Dr . James Middleton , P . G . M ., presided , and there vvas a large attendance . The brethren aftewards took refreshments at the Abbotsford Arms Hotel , the Prov . G . Master being in the chair .

The brethren of the Unanimity and Sincerity No . 261 , Taunton , gave two balls last week , the one on Monday being of the ordinary character , while that of Wednesday vvas a juvenile fancy dress ball . Both were well attended , and thanks to the admirable arrangements of the brethren who formed the Ball Committee , the guests present on both occasions enjoyed themselves

thoroughly . The 38 th annual festival and ball , in aid of the West Lancashire Masonic Educational Institute was held at the Town Hall , Liverpool , on Tuesday , the nth instant . Between 600 and 700 guests were present , the number

being in excess of every previous occasion , vvith the exception of that at which the presentation vvas made to the Right Hon . the Earl of Lathom , D . G . M . of England , and Prov . G . M . of West Lancashire . The ball vvas also a great success in all other respects , and we trust will prove beneficial to the Institute .

The installation meeting of the Probity Lodge , No . 61 , Halifax , on the 3 rd inst ., was a great success . There vvas a large gathering of members , and among the visitors was R . W . Bro . T . W . Tew , Prov . G . Master of West Yorkshire . The new VV . M . is Bro . Cecil Conor , Major in the Duke of Wellington ' s VVest Riding Regiment ,

and Adjutant ot the ist Battalion . The retiring VV . M ., Bro . Balme , vvas presented vvith a handsome gold P . M . 's jewel ( manufactured by Bro . Geo . Kenning , London ) in token of his services in the chair . The singing of the Halifax Harmon icQuartette Party greatly enhanced the pleasure of the after-dinner proceedings .

H . R . H . the Prince of Wales has been pleased to grant a warrant for a new Masonic lodge to be called the " Anglo-American . " The lodge is formed with a view of affording facilities for Americans resident in England meeting their brethren of the English Grand Lodge under the Constitutions of the latter body . Bro . Brackstone Baker , P . G . D ., who is well knovvn on both sides of the Atlantic , is

to be the first Master , Bro . Major George Lambert , F . S . A ., P . G . S . B ., acting past master , and Bros . A Clarke and F . Kedge the first Senior and Junior Wardens respectively ; Bro . G . Reynolds being the Secretary pro tem . The Constance Lodge , No . 2135 , Consett , gave their first ball in the New Town Hall , Consett , on Wednesday the 12 th inst . There vvas a large attendance of

members and brethren from other lodges in Durham and Newcastle , and the ladies being equally numerous . Everything passed off most enjoyably , the scene being additionally brilliant through the brethren appearing—by dispensation from Bro . Sir Hedworth Williamson , Bart ., P . G . M . —in their Masonic clothing and regalia . The refreshments were

supplied by Bro . George Brown , of the Railway Hotel , and the music by Messrs , Parker and Hardcastle , Consett , Mr . His Royal Highness replied in a very eloquent manner , stating the pleasure he had experienced at the reception accorded him by the Freemasons of Rawalpindi , and intimating his intention of writing to inform H . R . H . the Prince of Wales , the most Worshipful Grand Master of England , to that effect .

After the Duke ' s reply the lodge was closed , and all retired to the banqueting hall , where light refreshments were partaken of , and Bro . Dhaijabhoy F . Camadore , P -D . G . J . W . Punjab , vvas presented to H . R . H . by Bro . Col . Becher . The meeting went off well , and was a great success in every way .

During his stay in Melbourne he vvas entertained by the Mayor of the Victorian capital at a banquet , in the Town Hall . Sir Robert was also elected an honorary member of the Melbourne Masonic Club .

Bro . Sir W . J . Clarke , Bart ., R . W . District and Prov . Grand Master of the English , Irish , and Scotch Freemasons of Victoria , with Lady Clarke and family , have returned to Melbourne , after * a year ' s sojourn in the old country . It is the intention of the Melbourne Craft to honour our distinguished brother vvith a ball in the new Freemasons' Hall , of vvhich company Sir William is

chairman . Bro . Lord Carrington , P . G . W ., Governor of New South Wales , and Lady Carrington were the guests of Bro . Sir H . B . Lock , Governor of Victoria , and Lady Lock , on their visit to Melbourne during the Victoria Racing Club fortnight . Lord Carrington was

entertained at luncheon by the members of the Melbourne Masonic Club . Originally , however , it was intended to have given a Masonic ball in honour of the distinguished visitors , but their engagements vvould not admit of the arrangements being carried out at that time . Bro . William Beach , the champion oarsman of the world , who is a member of Lodge Tarbolton , No . 377 , Sydney

( S . C ) , has been the recipient of warm receptions at Adelaide , Melbourne , and Sydney , on returning from his victorious English tour . Testimonials ( purses of gold , jewellery , and the like ) , as well as entertainments by the Mayors of the three cities , were literally showered on the great sculler ; and at Sydney Bro . Lord Carrington took a very active part in the reception . ^ At Melbourne Bro . Beach vvas " put up " at the Masonic Club .

Bro . Thomas Fenn , President of the Board of General Purposes , and P . G . D ., ' was present at the meeting of the La France Lodge , No . 2060 , on the 17 th inst ., and gave the charge in the French language , to the great satisfaction of the French brethren and of the four initiates . Bro . Deputy T . Beard entertained a party of

friends at the Guildhall Tavern , on Monday last . There were present Bros . William Alpheus Higgs , Deputy George Sims , Albert J . Altman , Major Josephs , George Foster , Henry Squires , Deputy J . E . Walford , George Kenning , T . Beard , jun ., Mathew R . Webb , and others . The funeral of the late Bro . Thomas Burdett Yeoman took place at Abney Park Cemetery on Monday ,

the ioth inst ., and vvas attended by many of the deceased's family and friends . Bro . Yeoman was greatly respected by his brother Masons , and was the author of two or three Masonic songs , vvhich were deservedly popular . The brethren of the Franklin lodge , No . 838 , Boston , held at the Peacock and Royal Hotel , recently commemorated the Festival of St . John , when Bro . Robert

Hayes was installed as VV . M . The various new officers for the ensuing year were invested , and the other routine business having also been transacted , a large party sat down to a sumptuous banquet , the serving up of vvhich reflected much credit on the taste and spirit displayed by Bro . Clemow . The after proceedings , under the able chairmanship of the VV . M ., were of a very pleasant character .

A Masonic Jubilee Ball , under the patronage of Bro . James Terry , P . P . S . G . W . Norths and Hunts , Secretary R . M . B . I ., of the Henley Lodge , No . 1472 , and the Leopold Lodge , No . 1571 , vvill take place at the Cannonstreet Hotel , on Thursday , the 24 th February . Masonic Craft clothing to be worn . Bro . Thos . Bidgood ' s Quadrille Band has been secured for the occasion . The proceeds ,

The value of hand grenades as fire-extinguishers , and the great advantage of having them on the premises , was shown at the fire which occurred on Sunday last at

Wrottesley , the seat of Lord Wrottesley . His lordship and Lady Wrottesley and family , and the household were in bed at the time of the outbreak , but fortunately the housekeeper vvas awakened by the noise , and on going downstairs she discovered the kitchen in flames , she immediately raised an alarm , and Lord Wrottesley and the servants , with hand genades , succeeded in putting out the fire .

The seventeenth annual issue of the " Cosmopolitan Masonic Calendar and Pocket Book" for 1 SS 7 , published by Mr . George Kenning , of the Freemason , contains a very comprehensive list of the various Masonic bodies throughout the kingdom , and lists of the principal Grand Lodges of foreign countries . There has been an

increase of 53 to the number of Craft lodges under the Grand Lodge of England during the year . The latest number lor 1 S 87 is 2182 . The name , time , and place of meeting of all the lodges , and the names of the Grand and the principal Provincial Grand Officers are given in the Calendar—Newcastle Journal .

M . for the year , and afterwards appointed and invested his officers . The St . The True and Faithful Lodge , No . 318 , Helston , held its annual meeting on Wednesday , the 12 th inst ., when Bro . C Hudson was installed W . M . for the ensuing year , and afterwards invested his officers . The banquet took place at the Angel Hotel and vvas followed bv some

capital speeches and songs . Bro . R . Clarkson was installed W . M . of the Zetland Lodge , No . 561 , Guisborough , on Thursday , the 13 th inst ., the ceremony being ably performed by Bro . A . The Prov . G . Lodge of Roxburgh and Selkirk Shires held their annual meeting at Galashiels on the 12 th inst ., under the auspices of Lodge St . John , No . 262 , of that town . R . W . Bro . Dr . James Middleton , P . G . M ., presided , and there vvas a large attendance . The brethren aftewards took refreshments at the Abbotsford Arms Hotel , the Prov . G . Master being in the chair .

The brethren of the Unanimity and Sincerity No . 261 , Taunton , gave two balls last week , the one on Monday being of the ordinary character , while that of Wednesday vvas a juvenile fancy dress ball . Both were well attended , and thanks to the admirable arrangements of the brethren who formed the Ball Committee , the guests present on both occasions enjoyed themselves

thoroughly . The 38 th annual festival and ball , in aid of the West Lancashire Masonic Educational Institute was held at the Town Hall , Liverpool , on Tuesday , the nth instant . Between 600 and 700 guests were present , the number

being in excess of every previous occasion , vvith the exception of that at which the presentation vvas made to the Right Hon . the Earl of Lathom , D . G . M . of England , and Prov . G . M . of West Lancashire . The ball vvas also a great success in all other respects , and we trust will prove beneficial to the Institute .

The installation meeting of the Probity Lodge , No . 61 , Halifax , on the 3 rd inst ., was a great success . There vvas a large gathering of members , and among the visitors was R . W . Bro . T . W . Tew , Prov . G . Master of West Yorkshire . The new VV . M . is Bro . Cecil Conor , Major in the Duke of Wellington ' s VVest Riding Regiment ,

and Adjutant ot the ist Battalion . The retiring VV . M ., Bro . Balme , vvas presented vvith a handsome gold P . M . 's jewel ( manufactured by Bro . Geo . Kenning , London ) in token of his services in the chair . The singing of the Halifax Harmon icQuartette Party greatly enhanced the pleasure of the after-dinner proceedings .

H . R . H . the Prince of Wales has been pleased to grant a warrant for a new Masonic lodge to be called the " Anglo-American . " The lodge is formed with a view of affording facilities for Americans resident in England meeting their brethren of the English Grand Lodge under the Constitutions of the latter body . Bro . Brackstone Baker , P . G . D ., who is well knovvn on both sides of the Atlantic , is

to be the first Master , Bro . Major George Lambert , F . S . A ., P . G . S . B ., acting past master , and Bros . A Clarke and F . Kedge the first Senior and Junior Wardens respectively ; Bro . G . Reynolds being the Secretary pro tem . The Constance Lodge , No . 2135 , Consett , gave their first ball in the New Town Hall , Consett , on Wednesday the 12 th inst . There vvas a large attendance of

members and brethren from other lodges in Durham and Newcastle , and the ladies being equally numerous . Everything passed off most enjoyably , the scene being additionally brilliant through the brethren appearing—by dispensation from Bro . Sir Hedworth Williamson , Bart ., P . G . M . —in their Masonic clothing and regalia . The refreshments were

supplied by Bro . George Brown , of the Railway Hotel , and the music by Messrs , Parker and Hardcastle , Consett , Mr . Charlton , of Benfieldside Nurseries , being responsible for the beautiful floral decorations . Great praise is also due to the Stewards who officiated as M . C . 's , namely , Bros . J . Noble , T . D . Dryden , J . Hardy , P . Surtees , and George Christopher .
