The Recent School Elections.

THE RECENT SCHOOL ELECTIONS .

There was heavy polling at both our School Elections last week , and at that of thc Girls' School , the vacancies for which were fewer in proportion to the number of candidates than for the sister Institution at Wood Green , the contest was very close

the difference in the votes polled for Nos . 3 and 16 respectively being within 750 , while at thc Boys' election thc difference between Nos . 4 and 23 was upwards of 3000 .

I HE KOVAL AIASONIC INSTITUTION FOR GIRLS . The election of 16 candidates from an approved list of 3 G —reduced to 35 by the withdrawal of a girl subsequent to the issue of the voting papers—took place at the Quarterly General Court of Governors and Subscribers , which was held at

Freemasons Tavern on Thursday , thc 13 II 1 instant , under the presidency of Bro . Sir REGINALD HANSON , Bart ., M . P ., P . G . W ., Patron and Treasurer , the result being that London succeeded in < arrying the election of three of its eight candidates , and of the

three in which it was interested conjointly with one or other o ( l' ) e Provinces , while the Provinces secured 10 vacancies . The honour of heading the poll was secured by a purely London RiH , who brought forward 2105 votes from last October , and

increased her total to 5799 , her friends being evidently determined that , as this was her last remaining chance , there should "' no doubt whatever about her winning a place . One of thc u '"t and London girls , whose name would also have been

' -moved from the list in the event of failure , came second u 1 5077 votes , of which 3327 were already to her credit , while . \ o . 3 was 0 ; ie 0 f hvo can ( ijc ] ates from Warwickshire , \ ° obtained 4 8 7 . 5 voles at her lirst , and , what in any

^ ' " ' "instances would have proved her last , attempt . The Kent ' ^ 1 was placed fourth with 4755 voles , of which 18 39 were polled for her at last year ' s elections , while fifth place was taken J > ' one with claims en the Province of Hampshire and lhe Isle j ' Wight , and the Districts of Bengal and the Punjab , and as " was her onl y chance , her friends worked wilh a will , and

carried her through the ordeal successfully vvith a total of 47 80 votes . A last case from Wiltshire was close at the heels of No . 5 with 4740 votes , and the Leicestershire and Rutland candidate equally close up with 4710 votes , No . 8 , from Sussex , who

had 414 votes already in hand , obtaining such support as raised his total to 4682 . No . 9 , a London girl , started with 3501 votes in hand , and finished up with 4510 , while No . 10 , from Lincolnshire and other Provinces , increased her last October

total of 26 S 1 to 4473 votes . No . 11 polled in all 44 66 , of which 1512 were brought forward , the success in this instance being due to the joint efforts of N . and E . Yorkshire and London . The second girl from Kent and London made

such good use of her single chance of being accepted as to poll 4339 votes , while of the four remaining vacancies , the two Hertfordshire girls secured two , one standing 13 th with 4281 votes , and the other 16 th with 4140 , the intermediate places being

taken , as to the 14 th , by one of three children from Essex , who polled 4265 votes , and as to the 15 th , by a London girl with 4224 votes , of which 1310 were polled for her in October , 18 9 8 . That the struggle for these lower places must have been

extremely keen is shown b y the fact that the highest unsuccessful candidates polled 405 1 and 4037 votes respectively , but what will doubtless surprise our readers is that the former , who hailed from Northumberland and Durham , brought forward as

many as 3319 votes from the spring and autumn elections of last year ; and the latter , who hailed from Middlesex , 2157 votes from October . However , it must be a consolation to their friends to know that they are still eligible . There were , besides these two ,

as many as three children who polled between 2000 and 3 votes , and four between 1000 and 2000 votes . The total number of votes brought forward was 26 , 209 , an £ l the total , issued for

this election 7 8 , 177 , but of these latter 7271 were unused or rejected by the Scrutineers . For thc election to the

KOVAI . MASONIC INSTITUTION EOR BOYS , which took place at the Quarterly General Court , held at Freemasons' Tavern on the 14 th instant , under the presidency of Bro . RICHARD EVE , Past Grand Treasurer , Chairman of the

Board of Management , there were 23 vacancies competed for , and 37 candidates , of whom London furnished 11 , and had a joint interest with Surrey in two others , while the remaining 24 hailed from the Provinces and Districts Abroad . As at the

Girls election , London took the first place with one of its new candidates , for whom 6227 votes were polled , a Dorsetshire lad , with this one and only chance of winning , being second , with 6178 votes , the Derbyshire boy third with 6161 votes , and one

of two boys from Middlesex , with this single chance of election , fourth with 6001 votes . Hants and the Isle of Wight may congratulate itself on having carried both of its candidates , one of them being placed fifth , with 5937 votes ,

and the other , who had 45 votes in hand at starting , 19 th with 4694 votes . No . 6 , hailing from London , brought forward 1339 votes and augmented his poll to 5527 , while No . 7 , from the Province of Berks , was returned with 5460 votes .

One of the two Devon lads , who at his five previous ballots had scored 1819 votes , was at length rewarded for his persistence with the eighth vacancy , his total poll reaching 54 ' 3 , one of the

two London and Surrey candidates being ninth with 5407 votes , and the Northumberland boy , who started with 4 / 9 votes towards his final attempt , close up with 536 7 votes , The second London
