PROVINCIAL GRAND LODGE OF DURHAM .
CHARITIES FESTIVAL .
The first festival in connection with the Masonic Charities of the above province took place on Wednesday , the 12 th inst ., at Durham , when a special service was held in the Cathedral , and a banquet was afterwards held , a concourse of brethren sitting down to dinner , which was served in the Castle Hall and in the Town Hall , the large number requiring both halls to be used for the popular festival . Apart from the fund of Provincial
Grand Lodge , of which a large part is annually devoted to help Masonic Charities , there are now two provincial funds—the Durham Masonic Educational Fund , and the Hudson Benevolent Fund . For some years past the Education Fund has helped , in a number of cases , to provide education and maintenance for the orphans of deceased brethren , and hitherto all applications have been acceded to that have been brought before the Committee ,
which is representative of the whole of the lodges in the province , with a limited number of members nominated by the Provincial Grand Master . The Hudson Benevolent Fund was formed about 18 months ago , in recognition of the eminent services of the Provincial Grand Secretary , Bro . Robert Hudson , when over £ 1003 was raised voluntarily by the brethren of the province . The object of the festival was to raise a further
sum to place both these provincial funds upon a substantial and permanent footing , so that the Education Fund may possess an invested sum of £ . , 000 , and that the balance raised may materially add to the Hudson Benevolent Fund . Both of these aims are most praiseworthy , and the result of the festival will abundantly justify the undertaking . No fewer than 500 brethren of the province became Stewards , and in addition to these , several ladies and the children of brethren supported the festival by becoming
Stewards . The total was over 550 Stewards , up to last week the published Hit showing a total of 538 . Of the festival itself the Provincial Grand Master , Sir Hedworth Williamson , Bart ., was Chairman ; the Rev . Canon Tristram , D . D ., was Vice-Chairman ; and Bro . R . Hudson , Prov . G . Sec , and Bro . John Robinson , Secretary of the Charities Committee of the Province , were thc Secretaries . Their efforts have bsen supported by an active Committee composed of brethren repsesenting the chitf positions of the province .
