M ., Hro . Terry , a Past Master ' s Jewel , in recognition of his services during the year he had occupied the chair . He ( the VV . M . ) reTetted to see him nut of the chair , but they all had to

retire in their turn , and Bro . Terry was going out with the best wishes of all the members . In addition to the P . M . 's Jewel , he also had the pleasure lo present to Bro . Terry , in the names of the members of the lodge , a silver . salver They felt that some recognition of the liberality of Bro . Terry during the year was due to him , and , although its intrinsic value would in no way represent those services , yet he trusted it would be accepted as an expression of their

regard and gratitude . Bro . Terry thanked the VV . M . and brethren for the handsome jewel that had been handed to him , but he was too much taken aback , by the totally unexpected marl ; of their kindness which followed , to adequately express his gratitude . He should prize it highly , and he assured the brethren that he more than appreciated the gift . The lodge was then closed , and the brethren adjourned to a banquet at the Holborn Restaurant , presided over by

Bro . Col . Bake . The usual loyal and Masonic toasts were duly proposed and honoured , that of " The Grand Officers " being replied to by Bro . Binckes , Grand Sec , who congratulated Bro . Bake on his elevation to the chair , and on behalf of the Grand Officers said there was not one , from the Grand Master downwards , who would not do everything in his power for Mark Masonry .

Bro . Loveland , D . G . M . Hants and Isle of Wight , responded for " The Provincial Grand Master of Middlesex and Surrey . " Bro . James Terry , I . P . M ., then proposed "The Health of the W . M ., Bro . Col . Bake . " He was glad to see him in the chair . He had already received Grand Office as Swd . Br ., which was an evidence of the estimation in

which he was held by the Grand Master , and he wished him every success as the Master of the Henniker Lodge . The VV . M . returned thanks . The toast of "The Advancecs" followed , replied toby Bro . Da Silva . The VV . M . next proposed " The Health of the Visitors , " remarking that they gave zest to their meetings and

promoted the interchange of ideas which could not be other than advantageous to both . He had special pleasure in referring in this connection to a visitor present in the person of Bro . James Lewis Thomas , who was an old and valued friend of 40 years' standing . Bro . Bake then proposed "The Health of the I . P . M ., Bro . Terry , " whom he characterised as one of the

kindesthearted ol" men both in and out of Masonry . Bro . Terry , in reply , desired that the other Past Masters , Bros . Edgar Bowyer and C . F . Hogard , should be included . For himself , he thanked them heartily , and desired to add to the remarks he made in the lodge with reference to the presentation , that the feelings of surprise and pleasure would remain to him to the end of his Masonic career .

He sincerely trusted that the kindl y good feeling at present existing would ever be characteristic of the Henniker Lodge and its members . Bro . Bowyer and Hogard also responded . "The Officers of the Lodge , " responded to by Bros . Redcliffe , Crutch , Bellingham , and Larkin , brought the proceedings to a close .

DAVISON LODGE ( No . 331 ) . —The members of this lodge met on Thursday , the 13 th inst ., at the Masonic Hall , Red Lion-square . The W . M ., Bro . Jas . Inglis , advanced Bro . W . H . Kempster , M . D ., and performed the ceremony of installing the VV . M . elect , Bro . R . A . Meyer , most creditably . After the disposal of some formal business , the lodge adjourned .

The minutes of the last regular meeting were read , confirmed , and signed . The ballot was then taken for a W . M . for the ensuing year , when the S . VV . having expressed a wish to be passed over this year , the choice of the brethren fell upon Bro . VV . Silver Hall , J . J . B . Slack , of the Craft lodge , No . 1324 , and he was duly elected , and being present was advanced in excellent style by the W . M ., who was ably assisted by the various officers . Grand Mark Lodge certificates were presented to several brethren . "Hearty good wishes" having been tendered , and

nothing further offering , the lodge was closed in perfect harmony and adjourned . Refreshment followed labour , and afterwards the usual loyal and Masonic toasts were heartily given and received . CHARLES WADHAM WYNDHAM , P . M . 5 S 6 . The Craft at large , and the Southern Provinces in particular , have lately lost by death , in the 66 th year of his age , one ol its most zealous and enthusiastic members , viz ., W . Bro . Charles Wadham Wyndham , P . M . of Elias De Derham Lodge , No . 5 S 6 , his mother lodge , of which he was for many years Secretary , and continued a subscribing member till death ; P . M . of the Vale of Avon Lod"e ,

No . 1112 , Fordingbridge ( since removed to Shirley , near Southampton ) , Hants , of which lodge he was one of the founders ; P . M . of Lodge Unity , ' No . 3 S 6 , Wareham , Dorset ; P . M . of St . Cuthberga Lodge , No . 622 , Wimborne , Dorset ; P . P . G . S . W . Wiltshire ; P . P . G . S . W . a Royal Arch , Mark , Rose Croix , and Knight Templar . Bro . Wyndham was nearly always in office and at work as Secretary , Treasurer , W . M ., or as " locum tenens " for a sick or absent brother , or as Steward for the great Masonic Charities . He was a Vice-President of the Boys' School , Governor of the Girls' School , and Governor of the Male and Female Funds of the Benevolent Institution . He was always ready to help start a Iodge or chapter by giving his

services , his time , and his money , if there seemed any chance or prospect of success . Of independent means , a bachelor , belonging to an old county family of distinction , gifted by Nature with a fine melodious voice , and a " soul for music framed ; " genial , hospitable , generous , chivalrous , Bro . Wyndham was ever " a welcome guest , " and infused life and soul " to all within his sphere . " His special abhorrence was " a wet blanket . " "A merrier man

, I never spent an hour ' s talk withal . " His generous breast and open hand , his joyful heart and beaming countenance , diffused around him the warmth of Charity , the light of gladness , and the gaiety of cheerfulness . In the lodge he was always ready to promote its harmony and to assist its work . No office from the VV . M . to the I . G . and Tyler , but he was willing to fill , to serve an absent brother , or to maintain the

dignity of the lodge . For Bro . Wyndham considered that in the lodge the office conferred distinction on the holder , and net that the holder conferred distinction on that oflice . Many , in a whole lifetime , never learn this important truth . "When the lodge was closed " no one could do more to promote the social enjoyment of his "brethren and fellows . " His ample leisure , his talents , his delight in " communicating happiness to others , " caused him to be

much sought alter by the Craft in the lodges to which he belonged , and many other lodges in their proximity . With real sorrow we learned that Bro . Wyndham was laid aside from active work about four or five years ago by an attack of dropsy , 1 which confined him to his rooms for nine months . He was more than once " given over" by his medical attendants ; but was marvellously rescued from the very jaws of death , to a " reunion with his former

companions in toil . " Yet , though recovered to a surprising degree , he never regained his former strength , and during the present winter a renewed attack by the same enemy finally overpowered him . His last attendance at Iodge was at the installation of W . M . of 622 , in February last . Bro . Wyndham died at Wimborne ( where he resided for nearly

20 years ) on the 5 th inst ., and was buried in the local cemetery on the Sth inst ., followed to the grave by a large number of " brethren and fellows , who attended his funeral with the sprig of acacia and white gloves , to pay the last sad tribute of respect to departed merit . " Had our brother no failings ? Undoubtedly , or he would not have been of woman-born . But

" He was a man , take him for all in all , We shall not look upon his like again . " There are spots in the sun , and no good Mason need covet such a " cussedness " of spirit as not to fully and entirely endorse— " De mortuis nil nisi bonum . " E . T . B .
