A GRACEFUL PASTIME . Asa natural result of the increased interest taken in lawntennis , there is much activity among the makers of the articles used by the players . Amongst the best of the novelties lately introduced is a waterproof seamless ball , manufactured by Messrs . E . Nusser and Co ., of 41 , Gerrard-street , Soho , to which they have given the name of the " Perfect . " The size and weight of this ball are in

accordance with the existing regulations , and its chief merit consists in its power to resist wear and tear . When wet it will hold much less water than other balls , and altogether it is not undeserving of the title its inventors have bestowed upon it . For ourselves we should pronounce it the perfection of a tennis ball . The following unsolicited testimonial is from Andrew W . Tuer , Esq ., the owner of the private asphalte tennis court in Church-walk , Kensington : —

" September 10 th , 1885 . " Messrs . E . Nusser and Co ., 41 , Gerrard-street , Soho , W . " Gentlemen , —Your new bright-orange seamless tennis balls , the colour of which I notice is quite fast , answer most admirably . In dull weather the ordinary grey ball approximates much too closely in appearance to the asphalte to

allow of good play ; but by using the orange coloured balls the return , by reason of their distinctness , is easier and more certain , and when the light begins to fail , the game can be carried on , at least , half an hour later than when balls of the usual colour are used . —Yours faithfully , " ANDKEW W . TUER . "

Masonic And General Tidings

On Friday , the 14 th inst ., Bro . the Lord Mayor visited St . James ' s Church , Curtain-road , for the purpose of unveiling a memorial window to Shakespeare . Bro Sir T . Brassey , K . C . B ., M . P ., presided at the meeting on the 14 th instant of the Committee appointed

to consider the Employers Liability Act Amendment Bill . The death is announced , at Chester-square , on Monday , of Mrs . Trevanion , second daughter of the late Sir Francis Burdett , and sister to the Baroness Burdett-Coutts .

The gentleman who was drowned in the late boating fatality near Maidenhead was , we are sorry to learn , the only son now in England of Bro . Wm . Nicholas , so widely known as the Secretary of the Earlswood Asylum . The Prince and Princess of Wales , with their daughters , the Princesses Louise , Victoria , and Maud ,

honoured the Gaiety Theatre with their presence on Tuesday evening . The Duke and Duchess of Connaught , with their children and the Hereditary Grand Duke and Duchess of Oldenburg , arrived at Windsor Castle , on Saturday last , on a visit to the Queen . Bros . Lord Leigh , Lord Monk-Bretton , and the

Bishop of Peterborough are to be among the members of the Committee of the House of Lords on the Archbishop of Canterbury ' s Church Patronage Bill . The Prince of Wales has suggested that on the occasion of the annual exhibition at Norwich of the Royal Agricultural Society on the 16 th July , the day should be observed in that East Anglian city as a general holiday .

The Prince will himself visit the show on that day . Bros , the Earl of Stair , V . A . Williamson , Sir H . Williamson , Bart ., Sir J . St . Aubyn , Bart ., M . P ., G . O . Trevelyan , M . P ., Sir F . G . M . Boileau , Bart ., and Viscount Powerscourt were present at the third meeting this season at Brooks ' s , on Saturday last , of the Fox Club . A Committee has been formed for the purpose

of recognising the efficient manner in which Bro . Alderman Evans has carried out the duties as Sheriff . It is intended to present the Alderman with his portrait in oil , at a banquet , the date of which has not yet been definitely fixed . The Prime Warden for the ensuing , i . e ., after Saturday , the 29 th inst ., of the Goldsmiths' Company , will be Mr . VV . Trotter , 5 , Throgmorton-street ; and the

Wardens will be Bro . Major G . Lambert , 12 , Coventrystreet ; Mr . C . T . Lucas , 9 , Belgrave-square ; and Mr . C . Hoare , 37 , Fleet-street . The Builder contains some illustrations of the interior of Buchan Hill , a fine mansion near Crawley , which has been in course of erection tor the last three

years for Bro . P . Saillard , of Aldersgate-street ( W . M . of St . Botolph's Lodge , No . 2020 ) . The illustrations show the two ends of the great hall , one of the fireplace end , and the other of the gallery across the hall and opposite the fire . This gallery is of oak , and very beautifully carved . The grand staircase is also shown .

Bro . W . Holland has added a new attraction , in the shape of a most wonderful juggler to the already exceedingly liberal programme at the Albert Palace . Katsnoschin Awata is a Japanese , and performs the most marvellous feats in plate spinning and sleight of hand

tricks with complete sang froid , and with great celerity and neatness . The great Cinquevalli , Mr . Holland's importation at Covent Garden Theatre , is by no means his superior , and , judging from his first performance on Monday , his variety of tricks is equally great .

TUER . "
