Analysis Of The Returns.
ANALYSIS OF THE RETURNS .
We have described the Festival , and made known the Returns of the contributions raised by the brethren who constituted the Board of Stewards , and in order to complete our usual routine of duty it remains for us now to lay before our readers a carefully digested analysis of the several columns of figures . We do not propose , or indeed profess , to go below the surface . We take the Returns as they appear elsewhere , and compare them
with those of previous Festivals . We note any general , as well as any particular , features which strike our attention , and offer such explanations as seem appropriate . Occasionally we may make some suggestion , but , as a rule , we deal only with Ihe facts , that is to say , with the figures in a list , and if a lodge or a Province is represented or unrepresented , we are content with saying so , it seldom happening that we express any opinions
of an unfavourable character , though we are always at great pains to say what may be considered complimentary . Our reason for this is that , as our Institutions are mainly supported by voluntary subscription , it must obviously be beyond our province to take people to task for not doing what is optional . It is part of our plan to point out that , as the Craft has resolved on maintaining these large Institutions , it is the duty
of Craftsmen to contribute of their means , and according lo their ability , in order to keep them in a state of efficiency . But this and the converse proposition that , if the Craft does not supply the means , the Institutions cannot be carried on , are manifest truisms , and it is only a rare case for us to state them otherwise than in terms that are generally applicable to all Provinces and Lodges . However , we need not enter into elaborate explanations as to the purpose of thes e analyses . They offer us the opportunity of congratulat-
