THE TRIAL TRIP of the new torpedo-boat destroyer Thrasher , which has just been built by Messrs . Laird Bros ., Birkenhead , took place in Liverpool Bay , on Tuesday , when the Craft developed a speed of 36 statute miles per hour . EARL CADOGAN , Lord Lieutenant of Ireland , has , oa behalf of the Queen , conferred the honr-ur of Knighthood on Mr . Arthur Vicars , F . S . A ., Ulster King of Arms , Registrar and Knight Attendant of the Most Illustrious Order of St . Patrick .

BRO . COL . THB HON . H . BVNG represented her Majesty at the funeral of the Dowager Lady Dacre , who was one of her Majesty ' s Women of the Bedchamber at the time of her Coronation and for some years afterwards . Lady Dacre ' s remains were interred at Kimpton , near | WeIwyn , Herts , and among the wreaths which covered the coffin was one sent by her Majesty .

THE ADMIRALTY have completed their arrangements for commissioning six torpedo-boat destroyers for foreign service . Of these , the Dragon , Boxer , Bruiser , and Banshee will be attached to the Mediterranean Squadron , while the Handy and the Hart are intended for service on the China Station . Four torpedo boats will also be despatched to the Mediterranean . THE MARQUIS OF BUTE has announced his intention of contributing , Cio , ooo to the University of South Wales , t > be applied to the purposes of technical education ; the Drapeis'Company have promised £ 10 , 000 as a contribution to the fund for providing new buildings , and the Govemtnent have promised £ 20 , 000 , but on condition that an equal amount is raised by public subscription .

EARL CADOGAN , Lord Lieutenant of Ireland , and Countess Cadogan have been entertaining a succession of guests at th : Viceregal Lodge , Dublin . On the 14 th inst . a ball was given ; a second will be given this ( Friday ) evening . To-morrow ( Saturday ) and again on Monday their Excellencies go in semi-State to Lcopardstown , while on Tuesday , the 25 th instant , and two following days they will attend in State thc Horse Show in Dublin .

THE DUKB OF CONNAUGHT has offered a handsome shield for a competition on a large scale of a somewhat novel kind , namely , for an " Obstacle Race for Battalion Teams , " which will take place on the rough ground east of the Aldershot Gymasium , to-day ( Fiiday ) . Each team will consist of two officers , eight sergeants , and four sect ' ons ( 24 rank and file ) , making a total of 106 , and , 15 teams having been in training for some time past , will take part in the competition .

THE BRETHREN OF CHESHIRE will learn with interest that Bro . Lord Egerton , P . G . M ., will hold his annual Provincial Grand Lodge at Macclesfield on the 30 th prox ., when amongst the appointments will be that of Bro . J . T . Hindle as Prov . G . Organist . It is announced that the Egerton Lodge , No . 2132 , is about to remove from its present p lace of meeting at Seacombe to th e Albert Masonic Hall , New Brighton , the change being made for the greater convenience of the majority of the members .

THE QUEEN , who was accompanied by the Duke and Duchess of Connaught and Princess Victoria of Schleswig-H jlstein , and attended by Bro . Col . the Hon . H . Byng and Major the Hon . H . C . Ledge , as Equerries-in-Waiiing , inspected the 2 nd Battalion Sc ittish Rifles on the lawn at Osborne on Monday morning . When the inspection was over , the men were marched into an adjoining field and partook of refreshments , fur-1 i-hed bv Royal command . According to present arrangements , the Queen and her Court will leive Osborne for Balmoral on Wednesday , the 2 nd September .

WE REGRET to hear that a somewhat serious accident occurred on Monday evening to Bro . Lord Suffield , who was knocked down by a runaway horse and cart on the Overstrand-road , Cromer , while standing in conversation with a friend near the residence of Mr . H . Broadhurst , M . P . His lordship was knocked violently to the ground , and , immediate aid beirg summoned by Mr . Broadhurst , who witnessed the catastrophe , it was found lhat his lordship , besides being badly bruised , had sustained a slight concussion of the brain . Lord Sufheld , who was not in the best of hta'th , is , we are glad to say , progressing favourably towards recovery .

THE CHINESE AMBASSADOR broke his journey on his way north on Saturday last at Chester , in order that he might have an interview with Mr . Gladstone at Hawarden . On Monday bis _ Excellency visited Glasgow , arriving in the evening and meeting with a most enthusiastic reception . Among the places he inspected en route were the Steel Works at Barrow and the Shipbuilding Yard of the Naval Construction and Armaments Company , in which he saw building the first-class cruiser Niobe , 435 feet and 1000 fo s , four toipedo-boat destroyers , and two second-c ' ass cruisers . The party dined together at the Furness Abbey Hotel under the presidency of the Duke of Devonshire .

His lordship was accompanied by the Marchioness of Salisbuiy , Viscount Cranborne , Lord Hugh Cecil , and the Ladies Gwendolen and Florence Cecil , and among those who were present as spectators of , or participators in , the function were the Marquis of Dufferin and Ava , the late Lord Warden , the Mayors , Recorders , Town Clerks , & c , of the several poits , the Registrar and Chaplain of the Ports , the Judge of Ihe Poits Admiialty Court , the Surrogate , and the barons , with the

Sergeant of Admiralty , and other officials , while at the banquet which followed Bro . Aldeiman Sir Joseph and Lady Savory , representing the Lord Mayor and Lady Mayoress of London , and Bro . Sheiiff Cooper , with the City Trumpeters in attendance , were among the most honoured guests . After his installation , Lord Salisbury unveiled a full-lergth portrait of the Marquis of Dufferin and Ava , his predecessor in the office , in his uniferm as Lord Warden , wliich had been subscribed for and presented to the Corporation in recognition of his services . The procio-dings throughout were most interesting , and Dover , in honour of the occasion , was en fete the whole day .

Sir Edward Monson , win , three years ago succeeded Sir Augustus Paget as Her Majesty ' s Ambassador at Vienna , will be appointed Ambassador at Paris in succession to the Marquis of Dufferin and Avi who resigned his office a short time since . THE DUKE OF YORK , who has been , and till the end of the week will remiin , ths giiest of Bro . the Duke of Devonshire at Bolton Abbey , has been enjoying excellent sport over his grace ' s extensive moors , the weather having been very favourable ani the birds plentiful and in excellent condition . BRO . VISCOUNT WOLSELEY , Commander-in-Chief , reviewed the troops at Colchester on Wednesday and afterwards inspected the new military hospital , recently erected at a cost of , £ 20 , 000 , and the new camp buildings . His lordship subsequent lunched with the officers of the York and Lancaster regiment .

LORD ROSMEAD , Governor of Cape Colony and her Majesty ' s High Commissioner for South Africa , who is returning to Cape Town on board the Union Steamshin Company ' s vessel , the Norman , reached Madeira on Wednesday morning , and is reported to be greatly improved in health since he left Southampton . THE INQUIRY into the death of Mr . Crozier , the unfortunate actor at the Novelty Theatre , who was accidentally stabbed by a . brother actor tumid Franks , in the final scene of a melodrama , entitled— " The Sins of the Night , " on the ioth instant , termi . nated on Saturday last , the jury returning a verdict of death by misadventure .

MISS BELLA PATEMAN , MISS Beatrice Ferrar , Mr . H . De Lange , and Mr . Sidney Brough have been engaged by Bro . Edward Terry for his play , " Love in Idleness " when it is produced at Terry ' s Theatre in October next . Bro . Meyer Lutz , who was for so many years associated with the eminent comedian at the Gaiety Theatre , nil | look after the orchestral arrangements upon Bro . Terry ' s return .

THE INQUEST on the body of Baron Von Zedtwilz , owner of the 20-ton yacht Isolde , who was killed in the collision between that yacht and the German Emperor ' s Meteor on Tuesday , was held at Ryde the following day , and resulted in a verdict of " accidental death , " no blame being attached to anyone . A message of sympathy from the Queen was forwarded to the Royal Albert Yacht Club and also one from the Royal Yacht Squadron , Co > ves .

THEBRETHREN comprising the Horwich Lodge held their annual picnic on Wednesday , the 12 th inst ., the point selected for the outing being the delightful country round Skipton and Bolton Abbey . There was a good response to the invitations sent out , the party leaving Horwich ab jut eight o ' clock in the morning in a well-appoiited saloon on the Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway . After the pleasantest of journeys the pirty arrived at their destination , fully ready to do the sights of the place . Dinner and tei were partaken of at intervals , the day being spent in a most enjoyable fashion .

OWING TO THE RAIN that fell on Tuesday , several of thelmportant matches played during the early part of the week were left drawn . In that of Surrey v . Australians , the home team made 295 and their second innings was declared closed with 90 runs for the loss of four wickets—the not outs being Abel ( 50 ) and W . W . Read ( 7 ) . Trie C jlonials made 224 in their first innings but the light was so bid that they were unable to go in a second time . Kent beat Gloucestershire by 25 runs ; Essex beat Derbyshire , but Yorkshire v . Middlesex and Sussex v . Lancashire were both drawn .

AN ALARMING ACCIDENT happened on the evening of Friday , the 14 th inst ., to M ' ss Massey-Mainwaring ( daughter of Bro . the Hon . W . Massey-Mainwarmg , M . H . ) , who , with a lady friend , was being driven home from Hammersmith to Grosveaor-place . Close by Addison-road station the horses b ilted and the carnaje c iming in contact with a railway van , the ladies and the coachman were pitched into the raid . The former escaped with a severe shaking , but the latter had to be removed to the West Londin Hospital , where it was found that he was suffering from oncussion of the brain .

THE ANNOUNCEMENT as to the approaching tour of the Czar in Europe are to the effect that bis Majesty will leave St . Petersburg on Tuesday next , the 25 th instant , and will reach Vienna on the 27 th . His stay at lhe Austrian Capital will extend overt ™ or three dajs , and then , atter a brief visit to Kief to attend a local fete , his Majesty will go to Berlin . Thence he will continue his tour to Copenhagen , and thence visil Balmoral and Paris . He is expected to arrive in the latter city towards the end of September , and will return to St . Petersburg towards the end of October , after paving a prolonged visit to Darmstadt .

THE CHARMING VIFNBSSE ARTISTE , Miss Annie Dirkens , is now back atthe Shaftesbury Theatre playing her original part of Paolo in " The Little Genius . " The management wish it particularly known that there was no foundation whatever in Ihe reports that this lady had seceded from the cast , the facts of the case being simply thit Miss Dirkens' engagement with the late Bro . Sir Augustus Harris was until August only , but owing to the manner in which '' The Little Genius " has caught on the management wish to prolong her engagement for an indefinite period , and in order to dj this Miss Dirkens had to make arrangements to get out of several continental contr icts , to enable her to do which the management gave her five days holiday .

No ASSURANCE COMPANY of to-day has shown more ingenuity in devising orig ins methods of advertising itself than the British Woikman ' s and General ; and the best oi it is that the methods employed are generally of a kind to call forth feelings of goodwill and happiness . The . latest departure is a kind ol garden party , accompanied by » dinner , which was given to some five or six hundred guests at the Imperial Institute on

Saturday . At the first glance one does not , perhaps , quite see the connection betiwe " the British Workman ' s and the Institute ; but there is no doubt lhat such a function ai this will have a certain effect in popularising both ; and , if so , the end sought will pro" : ably have been accomplished . A SAD BEREAVEMENT has befallen the Home Secretary ( Bro . Sir M . White Ridley , Bart ., M . P . ) and the Hon . Lady Ridley , who , with their three daug hte' 5 / arrived at Blagdon , Northumberland , on Saturday last from London . Paul ' s Ca-hedral on Thursday , with all the pomp and circuital *" which attend the obsequies of so eminent a man . Ledge , as Equerries-in-Waiiing , inspected the 2 nd Battalion Sc ittish Rifles on the lawn at Osborne on Monday morning . WE REGRET to hear that a somewhat serious accident occurred on Monday evening to Bro . Lord Suffield , who was knocked down by a runaway horse and cart on the Overstrand-road , Cromer , while standing in conversation with a friend near the residence of Mr . H . Broadhurst , M . P . His lordship was knocked violently to the ground , and , immediate aid beirg summoned by Mr . Broadhurst , who witnessed the catastrophe , it was found lhat his lordship , besides being badly bruised , had sustained a slight concussion of the brain . Lord Sufheld , who was not in the best of hta'th , is , we are glad to say , progressing favourably towards recovery .

THE CHINESE AMBASSADOR broke his journey on his way north on Saturday last at Chester , in order that he might have an interview with Mr . Gladstone at Hawarden . On Monday bis _ Excellency visited Glasgow , arriving in the evening and meeting with a most enthusiastic reception . Among the places he inspected en route were the Steel Works at Barrow and the Shipbuilding Yard of the Naval Construction and Armaments Company , in which he saw building the first-class cruiser Niobe , 435 feet and 1000 fo s , four toipedo-boat destroyers , and two second-c ' ass cruisers . The party dined together at the Furness Abbey Hotel under the presidency of the Duke of Devonshire .

THEBRETHREN comprising the Horwich Lodge held their annual picnic on Wednesday , the 12 th inst ., the point selected for the outing being the delightful country round Skipton and Bolton Abbey . There was a good response to the invitations sent out , the party leaving Horwich ab jut eight o ' clock in the morning in a well-appoiited saloon on the Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway . After the pleasantest of journeys the pirty arrived at their destination , fully ready to do the sights of the place . OWING TO THE RAIN that fell on Tuesday , several of thelmportant matches played during the early part of the week were left drawn . In that of Surrey v . The former escaped with a severe shaking , but the latter had to be removed to the West Londin Hospital , where it was found that he was suffering from oncussion of the brain .

THE ANNOUNCEMENT as to the approaching tour of the Czar in Europe are to the effect that bis Majesty will leave St . Petersburg on Tuesday next , the 25 th instant , and will reach Vienna on the 27 th . His stay at lhe Austrian Capital will extend overt ™ or three dajs , and then , atter a brief visit to Kief to attend a local fete , his Majesty will go to Berlin . Thence he will continue his tour to Copenhagen , and thence visil Balmoral and Paris . He is expected to arrive in the latter city towards the end of September , and will return to St . THE CHARMING VIFNBSSE ARTISTE , Miss Annie Dirkens , is now back atthe Shaftesbury Theatre playing her original part of Paolo in " The Little Genius . " The management wish it particularly known that there was no foundation whatever in Ihe reports that this lady had seceded from the cast , the facts of the case being simply thit Miss Dirkens' engagement with the late Bro . Sir Augustus Harris was until August only , but owing to the manner in which '' The Little Genius " has caught on the management wish to prolong her engagement for an indefinite period , and in order to dj this Miss Dirkens had to make arrangements to get out of several continental contr icts , to enable her to do which the management gave her five days holiday .
