Roebuck , Trustee of the Institution , and said that he had known him 40 years . He filled many offices of distinction in the Boys' School , and was on the Board of Management . From 1871 to 1885 he vvas a Trustee ,

and he always devoted himself very much to the interests of the Institution . Bro . S . G . HOMFRAY seconded the motion , which was then put and carried . On the motion of Bro . GLASS , seconded by Bro . PRITCHARD , Bro . Richard Eve , P . G . T ., vvas elected a Trustee in the place of the late Bro . Roebuck , and Bro .

He had always taken a deep interest in the Institution , and he trusted it would ever flourish . Whatever he could do he hoped he would have health to sustain him in the performance of his duties .

The following motion by Bro . J . S . CUMBERLAND , seconded by Bro . J AMES BRETT , P . G . P ., vvas carried , vvith the amendment that the hour be four instead of five , moved by Bro . A Serious Error.

A SERIOUS ERROR .

In the Journalist of last Saturday , in a biographical notice of Bro . W . M . Duckworth ( P . M . 1928 ) , it was stated that , in recognition of his services as the first Treasurer and a founder of the Gallery Lodge , he was elected its VVorshipful Master without having filled the offices of Junior and Senior Wardens . Taken literally

this is correct , Bro . Duckworth not having served both those offices . But as the statement might lead people to suppose that Bro . Duckworth never served in a Warden ' s chair , it is necessary to say that he was appointed direct from his position of Treasurer to the post of Senior Warden without previously going through the position of Junior Warden . Freemasons

will know that he could not have been elected Worshipful Master unless he had been a Junior or Senior Warden in some lodge for 12 months , and the Gallery Lodge would probably have lost its warrant and its Past Masters been suspended for a period if the brethren

had been guilty of such a violation of Masonic law as to place in the chair , without the special licence of the Grand Master , a brother who had not been a Warden for a year . Grand Lodge books will show that Bro , Duckworth vvas S . W . of the Gallery Lodge for the year from December , IC 8 3 , to December , 1884 .

Centenary Op The Samaritan Lodge , No. 286, At Bacup.

CENTENARY OP THE SAMARITAN LODGE , No . 286 , AT BACUP .

The brethren of the above lodge celebrated their centenary at Bacup , East Lancashire , on Thursday , the 13 th inst . It was undoubtedly worthy of the high reputation they have acquired , for they had spared no

trouble or expense so as to provide most lavishly for the members and visitors on the occasion , and they were highly successful . The brethren assembled at 1 . 45 at the Green Man Hotel . Bro . Henry Turner , P . AL , P . P . G . S . B ., acted as W . M . ; Bro . John Wilson , P . M ., as S . W . ; and Bro . Daniel Hargreaves , P . M ., as J . W .

Centenary Op The Samaritan Lodge , No. 286, At Bacup.

At the opening , Bro . Col . LE GENDRE N . STARKIE , P . G . M ., in a short address , entrusted the centenary warrant and jewel to the W . M . The former was read by Bro . J AMES NEWTON , P . A . G . Sec , and returned to the W . M .

The WORSHIPFUL MASTER expressed the great pleasure they all felt at seeing Bro . Col . Starkie there that day on such a memorable occasion , and he wished to convey to him from every member of the lodge a very hearty welcome indeed in their midst .

Bro . Joseph Thompson presented the Prov . Grand Master with a gold centenary jewel , subscribed to by the members of the lodge , who also accepted a centenary chain , and invested the Worshipful Master with the same .

The WORSHIPFUL MASTER replied in a few wellchosen remarks . An epitome of the history of the Samaritan Lodge , vvhich had been prepared very carefully and with great ability by Bro . HENRY TAYLOR , P . M ., P . P . G . S . B ., vvas read by him , who also gave a sketch of earl y Freemasonry in Bacup and Rossendale .

The brethren formed in regular processional order under the supervision of Bros . W . H . Peak , P . G . D . C ., ' and W . Barnes Russell , Deputy P . G . D . C , who carried out their duties admirably , and proceeded to St . John ' s Church for Divine service . A very powerful sermon was preached by Bro . Rev . John S . Doxey , P . P . G . Chap ., Punjab , India , and vvas assisted in the service

by Bro . Rev . Arthur Phillips . The proceeds of the collection vvas devoted to the Local Blind and Deaf and Dumb Institutions . The procession returned to the lodge rooms , where the brethren re-assembled , and after " Hearty good wishes " had been expressed by the numerous visitors the lodge was closed .

The following is a list of those " present : Bros . Col . Le Gendre N . Starkie , P . G . M . ; Fritz Reiss , P . S . G . W . Rev . J . O . Jelly , P . G . Chap . ; Joseph Pollard , P . G . Ashworth , P . AL ; VV . H . Aladen , P . M . ;

Cuthbert Blacow , S . D . ; and VV . H . Kershaw , P . AI . The brethren subsequently partook of a banquet at the Bacup Mechanics' Hall , vvhich was beautifull y served by Mr . Jackson , the proprietor of the Green Man Hotel . One very agreeable feature vvas the fact that the brethren had the pleasure of having ladies

present . That alone was sufficient to guarantee the happiness of everyone present . About 140 sat down , and everything vvas of the very best , and the company charming . The usual loyal and patriotic toasts vvere duly honoured .

"The Health of the Prov . Grand Master " was proposed by Bro . WILSON in flowing terms , and drunk with enthusiasm . Bro . Col . STARKIE said : VV . AL , Ladies , and Brethren , —The stereotype form of being unaccustomed to public speaking , does not exactly apply in one sense , as I am accustomed to speaking in public , but not to

ladies . However , it gives me great delight to see them and such a large assemblage of brethren . I thank you , Bro . Wilson , for proposing my health , using such kind expressions as you did , especially in connection of the position I hold with regard to the Institution you have named , namely , the East Lancashire Systematic Educational and

Benevolent Institution . All institutions are either for good or evil I am convinced , nor can it be denied this is for good . I have been reminded 1 have not been to Bacup , but I can assure you if I can be of any use to you in the future I shall be only too pleased to do so . We should establish good and healthy enjoyment ; the savage eats by himself ; the educated dine together .

What could be better than the present occasion to see the laws and evidence of refinement and education vvhich on that occasion especially resulted from the benefit of Masonry . He concluded by thanking them all for the arrangements they had made for the comfort

of the visitors , and the pleasure he had received from the musical portion of the programme . The toast of " Bro . George Mellor , Deputy P . G . M ., " vvas proposed by Bro . DANIEL HAKOKEAVES , P . M ., in a very witty and effective speech , and vvas heartily received .

Other toasts followed . The evening's enjoyment was greatly enhanced by the beautiful music rendered by Bros . W . H . Kershaw , P . AL ; Ridsdale Bowley , S . W . ; Cuthbert Blacow , S . D . ; and A . Lewtas , P . M .
