held the office for a number of years , and it was then looked upon as a life office , but last year a number of the brethren broke down what they considered to be a monopoly and elected Bro . Allcroft for the year , but it now appeared that he had come forward and allowed himself to be put in nomination again . He therefore trusted that every member would use his influence , and every one who was able to attend Grand Lodge would give
his vote , so that this office , the only one in their hands , should be annually conferred upon some brother who was worthy of that distinction . Bro . Blackie returned thanks as Secretary . Bro . H . Thompson also urged the members to preserve in the course which Bro . Headon had marked out , as they
could not too rigidly guard the appointment to the only office that was open to the Craft in the Grand Lodge . The Worshipful Master next gave " The Officers of the Lodge , " to which they responded , and the Tyler ' s toast brought a harmonious meeting to a close , which had been enlivened by songs and recitations from Bros . Stevens , Cozens , and others .

The ceremony was admirably worked and highly appreciated by the large number of brethren in lodge assembled .

the usual Masonic toasts were duly proposed and heartily received . Bro . West , I . P . M ., proposed "The Health of Bro . Lassom " in well deserved praise , intimating that he ( Bro . Lassom ) was about to retire from the proprietorship of the Thicket Hotel , and wishing him happiness , long life , and prosperity . The toast was most heartily received and honoured .
Bro . Lassom in reply said he thanked the brethren very much , and was greatly gratified at the manner in which the toast had been proposed and received , it had been his greatest wish and endeavour to please the members of the lodge during his connection with it . Through illness he certainly was about to retire from the Thicket , but he
trusted not from the Penge Lodge , and hoped , should health and strength attend him , to be a frequent visitor and brother amongst them . The harmony of the evening was much enhanced by songs ably rendered by Bros . W . Reed , Rogers , and Downey .

Tyas Bussey was raised to the Sublime Degree of a M . M . The report of the Audit Committee having been received and adopted , the W . M ., Bro . H . F . Bussey , installed his successor , Bro . Minstrell , in the chair of K . S . The new W . M .
proceeded to appoint and invest his officers as follows : Bros . Wm . Mackenzie Duckworth , S . W . ; Chas . F . Pardon , J . W . ; H . Massev , P . M ., Treas . ; R . J . Albery , Sec ; Goldsmith , S . D . ; j . C . Duckworth , J . D . ; Griffiths , I . G . ; Herbert Wright , D . C . ; Perkins and Hancock , Stewards ; and Tarran , Organist . The concluding charges of the installation ceremony were then admirably given by Bro . Massey , P . M . The W . M . next presented the l . P . M . with
a valuable Past Master ' s and founder ' s jewel , and in doing so spoke of the excellent working Bro . Bussey had exhibited during his year of office . Bro . Bussey acknowledged the presentation in suitable terms . The W . M . then presented Bro . W . M . Duckworth , the S . W ., with a Past Treasurer ' s and founder ' s jewel , in recognition of his valuable services to the lodge since . its consecration as the first Treasurer .
The lodge shortly afterwards was closed , and the brethren adjourned to Kennington Oval , where they sat down to an excellent banquet . The usual loyal and Masonic toasts having been given , Bro . H . Bussey , in proposing "The Health of the New W . M ., " said that it was impossible for him to propose a more popular toast . Their new W . M . was not only one of the founders , but he had served the office of Junior and
Senior Wardens . He had been most regular in his attendance , and the brethren would have already formed a good opinion of him as Master from the way in which he had discharged the duties of that high office that afternoon . Bro . Minstrell had already given sufficient promise of his abilities as a Mason , and it must be a matter ot great satisfaction to him to find that the Gallery Lodge was in such a prosperous condition . The new W . M . would find that he
would be called upon to preside over a lodge which in two years had actually reached 49 members . For a lodge starting so recently to arrive at such a culmination of success was a great fact in Freemasonry , and when they considered that within the door of that lodge brethren were found who represented great diversity of interests in their common profession of journalists , it was no small thing that they should meet together with that perfect harmony and accord which
was essential in all Masonic lodges , fo hold together a lodge of Masons who , in the ordinary exercise of their professional duties were more or less working on a competitive basis , required great tact and courtesy from the actual occupant of the chair of K . S . It was no less to the credit of the brethren of the Gallery Lodge than a bright example of the genuiness of the Masonic Fraternity that such a lodge existed . The Gallery Lodge
had repeatedl y been very highly spoken of , not only in London but in the provinces , and the many visitors who had partaken of their hospitality since the consecration of the lodge had never had anything but a kind word and hearty praise for the youthful but vigorous lodge known at Grand Lodge as No . 1928 . In proposing this toast he knew he should have the cordial support of all the brethren , and he trusted that their W . M . that day 12 months would
be able to say that he had spent a happy year as Master of the Gallery Lodge . The toast was drunk with much enthusiasm . The Worshipful Master in reply thanked the brethren very warmly for the way in which they had received the toast . He was afraid that the l . P . M . had used too flattering language in proposing it , but he could assure them that he would do his best to justify to some extent the favourable observations of Bro . H . Bussey , It was needless for him
to say that having taken a great interest in the formation of the lodge it would ever command his best services . The Worshipful Master next proposed "The installing Master , Bro . II . Bussey . " Brethren would scarcely require any words from him to increase their esteem and affection for the I . P . M ., who had served the lodge with fidelity and ability , and whose year of office had reflected credit not only on himself but on the lodge . He would also couple with the toast the name of Bro . Massey , who was one of their most valued Past Masters .
Bro . H . Bussey in responding to the toast said that he felt it to have been a very hi g h honour for him to have passed through the chair of this lodge . He could not allow that opportunity to pass without thanking in the presence of the brethren Bros . Pardon , Goldsmith , and Massey , for the great asssistance they had rendered him in attaining

the necessary knowledge required for a Master who did his own work in lodge . _ Bro . Massey said that it was a matter of great regret to him that he had been unable to be present at the opening of the lodge , but his professional duties had compelled his attendance at the Grand Lodge of Mark Master Masons , where H . R . H . the Prince of Wales had in the course of
the afternoon received the rank of Past Grand Master of the Mark Degree . However , he believed that when the brethren came to read the remarks of H . R . H . they would not regret his ( Bro . Massey ' s ) absence , and they would receive from those observations a higher impression of Freemasonry than ever they had before . With regard to the Gallery Lodge , he could only thank the brethren for
the unswerving loyalty and kindness which they had always shewn him and of which he should never be forgetful . Bros . Perkins and Lacker acknowledged the toast of "The Visitors . " The Worshipful Master next proposed " The Health of the Treasurer and Secretary . " Bros . Massey and Albery duly responded .
The Worshipful Master then gave " The Health of the Officers , " to which toast The Senior Warden , in the course of a few remarks , said that the officers for the present year included three or four of the most accomplished Masons in the kingdom , and all of them were devoted to the Gallery Lodge . Bro . Massey , the Treasurer , was incomparable as a Mason , and his
reputation extended throughout the kingdom , while Bro . Pardon , the Junior Warden , could hardly be equalled , and certainly could not be excelled , by any working Mason in the metropolis . Having received that day the high office of S . W ., and having been decorated with a Past Treasurer ' s jewel , he felt quite overwhelmed with the honours which had been showered on him , and he trusted the brethren would therefore excuse any further observations .
The post-prandial proceedings were enlivened with an excellent selection of vocal music b y Bros . Seabrook , Goldsmith , Whitefoot , Fisher , Potts , J . H . Smith , Hancock , Macdonald , H . Bussey , F . Gale , O . VVillson , F . Saunders , and John Gilbert Mac Lachlan . Bro . Montague Vizetelly also greatly amused the brethren with his recitation . The Tyler's toast brought a very pleasant evening to a satisfactory termination .

Bray having answered the necessary questions , was duly raised to the Sublime Degree of M . M . by the W . M . in a very able manner . The Secretary then read to the lodge the bye-laws , and in conformity therewith the brethren proceeded to ballotfor a W . M ., and
afterwards for a Treasurer , for the enusing year . The choice fell respectively upon Bro . VV . H . Russell , S . W ., as W . M . elect , and Bro . F . Rossiter , P . M ., was re-elected to fulfil the honourable position of Treasurer . Both these worthy brethren returned thanks , and promised to do the utmost in their power to advance the interests of the Derwent Lodge . Bros . John Bray and G . Roddis were
appointed to conduct the lodge audit , and Bro . Leslie reelected Tyler . Bro . Hennah , l . P . M ., then proposed and Bro . J . Bray seconded that a Past Master's jewel be presented to the W .
