should be carried out in a perfect manner by the officers , from the VV . M . downwards ; and last , though not least , there should be a practical system of support of the grand Charities of the Order ; " for it was simply painful in some lodges to see the careless manner in which the ceremonies were carried out . Another thing that struck him was that Masons should be more particular as to the class of candidates they proposed : There was a bye-law in the province
of Kent which said "that no one should be admitted into a lodge untill full enquiries into his character and position had been made , " and this he contended should be carried out in its entirety . It was a delicate point ; but one might generally suppose if a candidate came from a town where there was a lodge to one some miles away from his home , that there must be some cause for it , and it certainly was not right to admit him without the fullest enquiries . The
province was prospering ; there were 49 lodges , and a proposition had been made to Provincial Grand Lodge for another at Shooter's Hill , Woolwich ; but it was found to be in the metropolitan district , and therefore out of the jurisdiction of their Grand Lodge . After referring to the recent legislature at Grand Lodge on the position of joining Past Masters and the wearing of the purple above the blue in Grand Lodge , he concluded by thanking them again for
their hearty reception of the toast . Bro . Dawes then proposed "The Provincial Grand Officers , Past and Present , " and in response Bro . Emmerson said it was a great honour to be an officer of Grand Lodge , especially under such distinguished Masons as Lord Holmesdale and Bro . Eastes . It had given him great pleasure to be present that day and see their VV . M ., who was a scion of good stock , installed in the chair of the lodge ;
it was an epoch in its history and augured well for its future prosperity . Bro . Thorpe returned thanks for himself and for the kind remarks made about the services of his late revered father . He was pleased his services were appreciated . Until within a few years ago a Treasurer was supposed to be elected for life , but now they saw at Grand Lodge the spectacle of two candidates for it . Whether it was right or
not he could not say , but as long as they elected him Treasurer for the Province of Kent they might depend upon it he should do his duty . The Immediate Past Master then proposed the toast of "The VV . M ., " and in so doing said there was a great difference between eulogy and flattery , and he did not intend to say a word of flattery to Bro . Green , but he could say truthfully that Bro . Green was eminently qualified
to carry out the duties entrusted to him . He therefore proposed the toast and felt sure every brother in the lodge would wish their VV . M . all of happiness and prosperity . The Worshipful Master , who was received with cheers , said it was through seeing the hearty way in which his uncle , the D . P . G . M ., went about his work that made him determine to become a Mason , and try and emulate him . He thought there must be something good in Masonry ,
and evidently the S . W . and J . W . must have had the same ideas , for they were both initiated with him by the D . P . G . M . on the same night , and like him only wished they had joined it before . He trusted soon to see them occupy the position he now occupied , and thanked them all heartily for their kind reception of the toast . The next toast was that of" The Visitors , " coupled with the name of Bro . Bellingham , who responded . " The Installing Officer , Bro . Chubb , " was next honoured ,
and he returned thanks . Bro . Hallowes , in responding for "The Charities , " spoke eloquently of the late Bro . Chubb , who , he declared , was not only one of the founders of the lodge , but whose charity and kind heartedness made him beloved by all with whom he came in contact . "The Officers , " "Masonic Press , " and the Tyler's toast concluded the proceedings , which were made doubly enjoyable by the excellent singing of Bro . Cozens , and other of the brethren .

The minutes having been read and confirmed , and Bro . Taylor having answered the usual questions , he was duly raised to the sublime degree of Master Mason . A few brethren

The lodge having been duly closed the brethren adjourned to an excellent banquet presided over by the W . M . On the removal of the cloth the usual loyal and Masonic toasts were given from the chair . Bro . Bryant , I . P . M ., then assumed the gavel , and proposed "The Health of the VV . M ., " congratulating the lodge on having elected so proficient a member of the Craft and a brother so popular amongst them as Bro . Fidler .
The toast was received most enthusiastically , and the VV . M . in reply thanked Bro . Bryant and the brethren for the cordial manner with which they had drank his health ; he trusted that during his year of office he should give satisfaction in the discharge of his important duties ; he had been placed in the chair by the unanimous vote of the brethren , and hoped that when the time came to vacate the Mastership he should do so with the same hearty good
wishes as the brethren had been good enough to express towards him on this the occasion of his assuming office . "The Health of the l . P . M . " was then drunk most cordiall y , and Bro . Bryant , the Installing Master , returned thanks in an eloquent speech . To "The Health of the Visitors" Bro . Lewis , W . LANCASTER . —Duke of Lancaster Lodge ( No . 1353 ) . —On Thursday evening , the Gth inst ., the members of the above lodge celebrated the festival of St . John the Baptist in the banqueting hall at the King ' s Arms Hotel . At the installation of the VV . M . in July last the customary banquet was abandoned out of sympathy for the VV . M ' ., presided , and he was supported on his right by Bros . H . Hartley , l . P . M . ; J . Barrow , P . M . ; T . Hatton , P . M . 203 ; A . Stanley ; J . W . 1051 ; F . T . M . and heartily responded to . Bro . P . Gregson proposed " Prosperity to the Duke of Lancaster Lodge , " and expressed the pleasure it had
afforded him in accepting the invitation of the VV . M . and brethren of the lodge to attend their banquet . He thought such gatherings were calculated to promote a friendly feeling among the members of the three lodges , and during the time he had been in office in the Fortitude he had been glad to do what he could to promote the feeling of fellowship which existed .
Ihe toast was drunk with fire , and Bro . VV . King , the Secretary , whose name had been coupled with the toast , in responding , thanked the proposer for the friendly and Masonic wishes he had expressed with regard to the lodge , and said he had every confidence in the future of the Dulce ; the members had borne their troubles as became Masonspatiently and in a spirit of submission—and he hoped that noiy they . could discern the silver lining to the dark cloud
which had hung over them , and that the social gathering that night would be the beginning of brighter and more prosperous days . He cordially re-echoed the sentiments expressed by the VV . M . of the Fortitude , and hoped that when steps were taken lo secure a Masonic Hall in Lancaster that there would be unity and harmony in carrying out the work , with equal privileges to all the lodges . Bro . H . Hartley proposed the health of the VV . M ., and
referring to the trouble which had come upon him immediately ^ before his installation , expressed the hope that the remainder of his period of oflice might be happy and prosperous . The toast was heartily drunk with honours , and Bro . Oglethorpe , in responding alluded in feeling terms to the sympathy and kindness he had experienced from the members when he took office , and the consideration they had shown in postponing the banquet on account of his domestic
affliction . He should never forget that kindness . He shared the hopes of speakers that had preceded him as to the future of the lodge , and had little doubt that it would once again attain a position of prosperity and progress as in the past . Bro . W . Huntington proposed the toast of "The Past Masters " of the lodge , to which Bros . J . Barrow and R . Wolfenden responded
The VV . M . proposed "The Visitors , " coupling with the toast the names of Bros . T . Hatton and B . Gregson . In responding , Bro . Hatton expressed the pleasure it had afforded him , as a Mason and an old Lancastrian , to be present that night . Being a Lancaster man , and a Past Master of the Ancient Union Lodge , he felt doubly proud to be so hospitably entertained by one of the Lancaster lodges . He might tell them , too , that two of the oldest
Past Masters of the lodge to which he belonged were Lancaster men , and they were highly respected among the Masons of Liverpool . He referred to Bros . Wearing and Charles Bromley . ( Applause ) . Bro . Gregson also responded . "The Wardens , " "Ihe Junior Officers , " and
"Secretary and ' treasurer , " were all duly toasted , and the programme was brought to a close with the Tyler's toast . The proceedings were considerably enlivened by the harmony of Bros . T . Hatton , T . Beardmore , F . T . Webb , T . Armitstead , R . Bond , and R . Mortimer , and a most enjoyable evening was spent by all present .
